We just returned from 4 nights at Oblu Select in Sangeli, where we stayed in an overwater villa with pool on an all-inclusive basis.
Sadly we were very unlucky with the weather. Apart from 3 hours on our last morning, there was no sunshine - just high winds and often driving rain.
This meant that we were unable to do either of the complimentary excursions (snorkeling and fishing) and did not manage to do any scuba diving or snorkeling with the guys from the TGI dive centre.
In between the storms, we did manage a few snorkel dives off the beach in front of the resort, and saw a great variety of fish, including sharks. But no rays or turtles, as we had hoped to see on this trip.
The resort is lovely, and the service standards are pretty good. The ladies at the spa were all wonderful. And hero status goes to Nishan in the Sangs Bar and Lyn and Firu at Simply Veg. But the team at Just Grill (which we tried for both lunch and dinner) need more training.
Dinner at Simply Veg was the unexpected culinary highlight of the visit - a real wow experience. The buffet at The Courtyard was consistently good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And the wide range of cocktails at the Sangs Bar meant there was always something new and interesting to try - which was a good thing, as we spent a lot of time there sheltering from the rain and playing the board games provided.
Conversely, the wine in our room’s mini-bar was undrinkable.
The bar and pool area on the ‘adults-only’ island was very limited. And while it would have been nice to enjoy some peace and quiet there, on balance the main island was a much nicer place to hang out, even though it was busier.
My only other gripe was the unavailability of the golf buggies. Our villa was a 10 minute walk from the main resort - which would have meant a lovely stroll along the boardwalk when the weather was nice, but in the heavy rain, a 15 minute wait each time was frustrating.
This holiday cost more than $5,000 for 4 nights, so my expectations were high. Those expectations were largely met, with a few exceptions, and the weather was not the resort’s fault.
Neither was the state of Male airport, which was dreadful in both directions (both in terms of the facilities and processes). For a destination that is all about 5-star paradise luxury, the first and last experience that all guests have of the Maldives should be so much better.
