My family of origin is from the area near Pacentro, and I was familiar with this lovely town and surroundings, when we rented this apartment in Pacentro for a period of one month, April,2018. The location is as advertised. One side facing the back of the castle, while windows on the other side look out north-east over village roof tops to the valley below and the Maiella. The location and views are all as described… a brief walk down beautiful medieval via’s to Plaza di Popolo, morning sunrises over still snow capped mountains, hikes in the well marked mountain trails, and meals prepared in our kitchen, as well as enjoying local restaurants. The apartment itself is also as described… 2 bedrooms, each w a double bed, one with a folding cot; living room kitchen, and two baths one with tub/shower, and one with shower. Very adequate space for both of us and 2 adult children that joined us for one week. On arrival we were met and very helpfully oriented by Fergal who lives in the town and cares for the apartment. Our month in Pacentro was in short wonderful filled with unique encounters in the town, the area, and with residents. While, we recommend this accommodation, a few specific amenities would make daily life in the apartment as satisfying as the overall time in Pacentro. Specifically, The living room has only one overhead light, covered with a shade, making it impossible to read at night ( all of these apartments are dark due to small windows in thick walls) ;: a couple of lamps for reading in the living room.. and upstairs bedrooms would go a long way. The living room furniture consists of one older couch.. and 2 bean bags… the couch is ok for two.. but a couch and 2 beanbags for 4 adults? Perhaps another comfortable chair? Being in residence for a month, we prepared most meals in the house.. sadly only one pot has a cover that fits, the only other cover fits no other pan.. leaving most pans with no covers; Cooking utensils are sparse.; I purchased and replaced the crumbling gasket in the espresso pot; there are only 2 wine glasses in the house. One can make do and improvise with what is there, especially if you are eating out but the apartment furnishings and utensils are ‘minimalist’ in every respect; more reminiscent of your first apartment away from home than a vacation rental.
Let me be clear, I fully recommend this apartment; its location, room space, and Fergal the local representative are all terrific and with some attention to internal furnishings the whole apartment could be as great as its setting.
Epilogue: I shared this review with the owner, because I believe that is a proper courtesy. The owners response was appreciation for the feedback with a statement of intent to improve the conditions noted.
Love the loction of this accomodation which had
everything we needed , was clean and comfy with gorgeous views. Would definately stay there again
Very well equipped, spacious, comfortable, stunning views, lovely quiet position, really enjoyed our stay
We rented this house in Pacentro at the last minute. After visiting family in Italy in September, we were looking for some quiet time alone. My husband found this apartment, booked it and we drove over 7.5 hours in one day to get here. Let me say, from the moment we arrived, I knew it had been worth the drive!
Oh, what a joyful sight this town and this apartment! The views from everywhere are stunning--the medieval village, the mountains, the castle, and old narrow cobblestone streets. In mid Sept. it is still warm and sunny and this morning we joined others sitting at tables in the village square to drink coffee and just linger.
Pacentro is a mountain town and requires much walking and climbing stairs so I do not recommend this apartment to anyone with limited mobility. Warning––many streets are cobblestoned!Women--flat or wedge heels only or you'll be sorry!
The apartment itself is a 2nd floor gem! (Like others writing reviews, I'd warn that this apartment is only for able-of-foot--once you open the front door you are greeted by a very steep set of narrow stone stairs leading to the apartment door itself) The kitchen is large by Italian standards and fully equipped. The two full bathrooms are also large with plenty of hot water if you don't over do it. The queen size bed in the front bedroom we find quite comfortable and the room is dark enough to sleep as long as you like.
I wish we never had to go home.
Pacentro is a beautiful medieval town. It is a very quaint and relaxing old town with some nice restaurants and shops and the people who live in the town are very friendly and helpful. The house was terrific with two nice bedrooms, 2 nice bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and everything you need for an extended stay. It is right next to the castle with great views of the surrounding snow capped mountains.
Paola and her husband who manage the property are also wonderful, and both speak english.
