Converted chapel
The Old Chapel is situated on the edge of the village of Yorkley (population 2,600). Access is via an unnamed lane which is right next to the forest and wonderful walks can be taken from the doorstep. As one of our guests succinctly put it 'we came away for a break and could not have found a nicer place'. The chapel has been sympathetically converted retaining much of its original character and charm. There is lots of pine cladding on both walls and ceilings which gives a wonderful feeling of warmth and relaxation. The floors are old pine. Candles in the evening and a beast of a wood burning fire make this an incredibly relaxing place to be. Bliss! Sitting on the sofa by the fire all you can see is a wonderful forest view... no houses! Interaction with guests: I usually respond quickly to all enquiries. I hate being kept hanging around and don't expect others to have to! We live in London so will not be there on arrival but there is a key safe at the back door so time of arrival is never an issue. I was brought up in the Forest of Dean until the age of 18 and we go back there regularly. We live near Heathrow so the quiet in the forest is very appealing!!! My manager lives in the village should any help be needed if I am not available by mobile (very rare). I am happy to give advice about the cottage or its environs at any time. I know them both well! I am a people person and consider myself to be very friendly.

Perfect
Has everything you will need for your stay and more. An abundance of everything from games, books, DVDs to a well stocked kitchen. The chapel itself looks out onto forest and has daily visits of sheep during our stay. We even saw a large deer a few metres into woods. Beds and sofas comfortable. Being June we did not need to light log fire but I would expect it would of created a lovely atmosphere in the chapel. Lots to see an do in the surrounding areas . Highly recommend this to anyone wanting a quiet stay in the Forest of Dean.

A haven in a beautiful setting
A last minute break in this gorgeous property, so spacious ,clean and well equipped. It literally had everything we needed and more. Cosy fire and tealights made it really relaxing of an evening and the Forest of Dean is literally on your doorstep, open the front door and you are in it. We loved the mezzanine bedroom and the dawn chorus was spectacular. Our sheep visitors every evening were a joy. Saw plenty of evidence of the boars, but sadly no sightings!! We are keen walkers so spent a lot of time in the forest which we enjoyed and we visited the local area including Monmouth and Speech House. It is well placed for visiting the local area and not far from Bristol, Gloucester, Chepstow. This was our first break away this year and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Doreens' attention to detail is second to none.

A fairytale cottage for grown-ups
We had never previously been to the Forest of Dean and from the first we were astonished at its beauty. The Old Chapel is an absolute gem and from the moment we arrived it felt as if we had stepped into the middle of an illustration from the Tales of Brothers Grimm. The cottage is superb; although it is situated in a small row of houses, being on a spur road into the forest, it feels completely private. Everything was spotlessly clean and very well-maintained,and, although it was originally a chapel, somehow gives the impression of a Bavarian hunting lodge, with antlers and other rustic artefacts on the walls, high ceilings, gallery and a wonderful log-burner. The facilities and appliances are absolutely first-class - it has a utility room to die for - capacious lighting, lovely comfortable beds and a plentiful log-basket, it's a real 'home from home'. Doreen has compiled a veritable 'bible' for her guests, containing operational details of everything in the property as well as a very comprehensive guide to local contacts, restaurants, tourist information and visitor attractions to suit everyone, which we found an invaluable resource during our short stay. The weather was remarkably kind to us (considering there was a hurricane forecast!), but had we been confined to barracks there was a brilliant selection of books and DVD's to keep us entertained - and a splendid wide-screen tv to watch them on. One of the best aspects of the Old Chapel is the plentiful seating around the log-burner, which means you can really spread out in comfort on a dark evening - a revelation in a holiday rental - and the captious dining table is also invaluable as a workstation if you bring your laptop to take full advantage of the excellent WiFi. As the mobile signal is poor, Doreen has also provided a payphone for outgoing calls - although it does not accept incoming; however we found you can get a fairly decent EE signal from just outside the property. We had a wonderful time exploring the area; a visit to the magnificent Puzzlewood was essential, Symonds Yat proved the perfect place for Sunday lunch - and the forest on our doorstep was a constant lure. Our only slight disappointment was not spotting any of the famous wild boar, although there was plenty of evidence of their presence! Doreen is a marvellous host and all communication was answered by return and in a very friendly manner. The Old Chapel does not feel like a 'holiday let' at all and, as such, our three day break felt as if it had lasted a week! We were very sorry to leave and will most definitely be returning to this idyllic spot in the future. Thanks so much, Doreen - you have two new converts to the Forest idyll!

Fantastic stay
We've just come back from a 3 night stay at the Old Chapel. A group of four in our twenties and loved the place the minute we walked in. The Chapel was so well equipped and stocked with teas and coffees, so much crockery, cutlery, utensils, dishwasher (with tablets) and everything to make it your home. Two cosy bedrooms, a great sized bathroom. The fact towels and linen were provided was a massive bonus. Bookshelves in the bedroom and main room suited to both old and young, several board games and TV with several DVDs so you're never stuck for something if you choose to stay inside. Great wide space with the amazing log fire (and great smell from all the wood panelling) created a lovely atmosphere. Lots of leaflets for the area and food nearby. We went to Cannop Cycle Centre to do the family trail which was a lovely trip and less than 10 minutes away and also a day trip to Bristol (50 mins). The two of us from Brighton were thrilled to see sheep walking outside the Chapel! Only downside to the area was a lot of places serving food closed earlier than we would be used to, but as mentioned there were plenty of options for takeaways in the Chapel. All in all a wonderful stay. We would definitely return and really can't fault it. Would recommend to anyone.

Thank you James. What a lovely review! Yes the eateries finish serving food at 9pm. Maybe I should put that in with the arrival details. Four months ago you might have seen the wild boar chewing up the grass in front of the chapel. It's near perfect again after such a short time. Thanks once again. Doreen

Beautiful cottage at the edge of a forest!
My friends and I spent the bank holiday weekend at this beautiful cottage. It has almost everything you would need together with a fully equipped kitchen perfect for those that like to cook. Lots of beautiful scenery a short drive from the cottage. It was the perfect stay.

Charming Cottage In A Lovely Location
We stayed in the Old Chapel for 5 nights in mid-June. It is in a quiet location on the edge of the forest. It is very well-maintained and has everything we required to make our holiday relaxing and comfortable. Every amenity we could think of was available. Besides walking the many forest paths right outside the front door, we enjoyed a bike ride and a visit to Mallards Pike, as well as a visit to nearby Puzzlewood and Chepstow Castle. The chapel was conveniently located for us to make separate day excursions to both Stratford-Upon-Avon and Bath, as well. The owner, Doreen, is very pleasant to deal with and really went out of her way, above and beyond, to make our visit as smooth as possible - even so far as to make a trip to Heathrow to find the best route for us to the chapel! We would highly recommend the Old Chapel to others seeking a relaxing get away.

A wonderful, peaceful, home from home
This is such a peaceful, welcoming place - absolutely the best-equipped cottage we have ever stayed in. Doreen, the owner could not have been more helpful in our initial exchanges and The Old Chapel more than lived up to our hopes and expectations. Situated on the edge of the forest, with walks on the door step and lots of attractions within easy travelling distance, it was perfectly situated - though we enjoyed just being in the cottage relaxing by the lovely wood-burning stove. Comfortable, clean, characterful - we will certainly hope to return before too long.

Wonderful
Just got back from a week in this beautiful cottage. Myself and my husband have stated in lots of places around the country but I have to say the old chapel so far tops them all. Situated in a very central location for exploring the forest of Dean and has every thing and more you could need. Very good living space with a lovely log fire which I really need practice at as only had it going once and that's because it was set ready to go!!! Overall a lovely cottage which I would recommend and stay at again. If you need a good restaurant then the ostrich is perfect proper old pub with out of this world food.

A solace of peace to treasure in a busy life
The Old Chapel is a delightful place to spend a few days. Set in a lovely and tranquil environment, it is an excellent base from which to explore the near and not so near countryside. The atmosphere in the Chapel is different, with its high roof and wood panelling. That in itself is a good experience. It is well and thoughtfully equipped with all we needed for the stay.
