We took a day trip out of Queenstown - it’s roughly 35km to Kingston along Lake Wakatipu, the drive itself has stunning views. Turn right into Kent St and follow it to the end you’ll find The Kingston Flyer Cafe and Bar (named after the old steam engine train which sits proudly in the nearby yards) the old track still sits in front of the cafe with ample parking and lakeside views - a short stroll to the jetty with picturesque views down the valley and access to come nice walking trails.
The cafe itself is reminiscent of an old railway station with ticketing window and signage, inside the walls are adorned with photos of an era when the train and old steamer worked the area.
The timber bar separates the dining area from the more casual high tables/stools which also leads to a small outdoor patio.
After a long hiatus the cafe has re-opened under new management and although the food menu is small there are plenty of hearty options to suit everyone.
We chose the Flyer Burger and the Caesar Salad with added haloumi.
The burger was delicious and came with a healthy serving of fries, the Caesar was fresh and not too overdressed but with a nice supply of bacon as well as the added haloumi, eggs cooked perfectly (not over boiled).
The staff are very friendly and nothing was too much trouble - I’d highly recommend taking a trip to Kingston.
