I was a bit concerned about booking this resort because of past reviews but having been on Railay I did like the location of the Phutawan.
Well I shouldn't have been concerned as the sea view room was just amazing. It was clean, spacious and comfortable. There were complimentary tea and coffee and a fridge stocked with drinks and other treats all reasonably priced. The room was clean everyday and towels changes on a daily basis. From our room we could see the pool, the sea and the rock climbers. Breakfast could possibly be improved but for the price I really can't complaint. I Reception and restaurant staff very friendly and helpful. would recommend to people that selects this hotel to bring a small torch for the evening as the path leading up to the resort is a bit dark. I would recommend this place and I hope to come back in the future.
PS not suitable for people with mobility problems or that can't walk long distance

Room Tip: Ask for sea view room

This hotel was the best we have stayed at so far on our travels in Thailand, it is perfect for couples as well as a group of friends. It's up in the mountains which means unreal views, it's a bit of a trek walking up the hill with your bags, but the staff are sure to run to you with a glass of grape juice ready to check in.

Pros: clean large rooms, good infinity pool with great view, staff attentive (they fixed a broken plug straight away in our room), close to main areas for rock climbing, quiet compared to main beach, good value compared to other very expensive hotels on beach front.

Con: 12-15 min walk from beach, with uphill but doable with a backpack but you'll be sweaty by the end!

After reading the reviews, I really wanted to like the place. Railay is a wonderful place and really needs to be visited. First, people complained about the walk but that's part of the fun and really is very easy even with bags. If you are concerned, then take a longboat to Railay East rather than Railay West which is closer. The location is great and away from the hubbub of the beach, and ever so beautiful. The staff is terrific particularly WiWi who is often at the reception. The rooms are comfortable and simple - this is not a 4 star or 5 star hotel. The balconies provide a nice touch and be prepared to share with the monkeys. The bathrooms are not fancy. I did see an occasional ant, but this is the tropics. The pool is terrific and the views spectacular. The downsides are that, despite claims to the opposite, the wifi was not working in the rooms so everyone was huddled in the reception area trying to "get on." I have my own hotspot so this was not a problem, but don't expect wifi if that is important. The second downside is the breakfast which may have been the cause of some slight food poisoning we received. The food does appear to be left out for maybe a bit too long. But I can't say for certain this was the cause. So, keep your expectations reasonable and you will enjoy.

We stayed here for 4 nights over New Years. We paid for the transfer service from Krabi airport which involved a car pick up and then long tail transfer from Ao Nang. We were then met by a tractor which took us up the hill to the resort, it was our first experience of such a transfer in Thailand and sitting on the side whilst avoiding falling off and monkeys along the sides was hilarious! It was meant to be a private transfer the whole way costing 1,500 THB but as we shared the longtail boat with another couple it was 1,000, a good deal.

On arrival we were greeted with lovely friendly staff who checked us into our pool view room. We had booked the best room in the new block with a sea view as it was our honeymoon, and we had told the hotel that it was for our honeymoon and they left a lovely flower arrangement on the bed for us which was very much appreciated! The room was spacious with a good sized bathroom with separate bath and shower and a gorgeous view overlooking the pool, sea and mountains. The room was clean but the bathroom always smelt of sewage which wasn't very nice, and the main reason for not giving the place a full 5 stars. There was free water replenished daily and a cheap mini bar. We tended to avoid the water given, explained below.

The breakfast was ok - it did the job but I mainly had toast and eggs and fruit, but I can see why some people would expect more.

We unfortunately took unwell whilst there (not sure if it was food poisoning or the water, aparently the cheap water is hard for westerners to stomach so stick to the branded stuff bought from the shops) which meant my husband needed an emergency doctor and drip in the middle of the night and the night receptionist was brilliant, giving us extra towels and toilet roll when asked and liaising with the medical centre. We ended up spending a day in the room and it did us well with good air con and the tv apart from the bathroom smell was off putting. Keeping the door open and letting the air con in worked well we learnt.

The resort was about 5 mins walk down the hill and to the left to East Railay which had nice restaurants and bars, and about 10-15 to the beach through walkways of restaurants and a few bars, plenty of choice.

All of the staff were brilliant to us, so friendly and smiley, carrying our rucksacks on arrival and when leaving, and we arranged our boat to Ko phi phi through them so got a lift down to west Railay. The tractor could only go as far as the junction where you go left for east and right for west, and the porter was going to carry both of our rucksacks all the way to the beach for us! About ten mins!! We couldn't do that (some ignorant people probably would) so we took over from there. We would go back for the views alone and we loved it was out of the way from mental busy Railay, but to be honest we weren't mad keen on Railay contrary to popular belief so that would be the deciding factor.
