We rented a shovel from one of the local hotels. Follow the signs through town to the hot water beach. Its just over a hill at the end of the road. There are bathrooms at the parking lot and a changing area. The sand is black and has gentle waves. You line up the two poles in your line of sight when you are at the top of the hill and go right down to the waters edge below the tide line. Dig around with your feet until you find an area that is warm a few inches below the surface. We were able to clear out an area to sit in but it doesn't get very deep since the sand keeps collapsing in on itself. The water was about 96 degrees. We would've had more time if we had come a little bit before low tide to finish getting our hole dug while it was still falling. We could only make our holes deep enough to just cover our legs but that was plenty and it was an excellent experience!
