We rented a shovel from one of the local hotels. Follow the signs through town to the hot water beach. Its just over a hill at the end of the road. There are bathrooms at the parking lot and a changing area. The sand is black and has gentle waves. You line up the two poles in your line of sight when you are at the top of the hill and go right down to the waters edge below the tide line. Dig around with your feet until you find an area that is warm a few inches below the surface. We were able to clear out an area to sit in but it doesn't get very deep since the sand keeps collapsing in on itself. The water was about 96 degrees. We would've had more time if we had come a little bit before low tide to finish getting our hole dug while it was still falling. We could only make our holes deep enough to just cover our legs but that was plenty and it was an excellent experience!

Visit 2hrs either side of low tide (the hot spring is covered at high tide). Take a spade so you can dig your own spa. Make sure you dig a bit first to see if you have found a hot spot; sometimes it can feel hot on the surface but is actually cold further down. The black sand is very hot from the sun, so wear shoes and have a beach shelter or something to sit on when you are not in the water. The view across the beach is stunning and was really relaxing sitting in the warm water and watching the ocean waves roll in. The beach is easy to find and about a 5mim drive from Kawhia town. There are basic toilets at the carpark, and an outdoor shower to rinse off the sand, otherwise there are no other facilities there.

We would highly recommend a trip to Kawhia and the ocean beach with the hot springs. In summer wear good footwear as the sand up and over the dunes gets very very hot. Take a spade and dig a hole at the bottom of the walkway over the dunes. You will be rewarded with a lovely warm soak. The beach is narly and would recommend swimming only on the incoming tide. Watch unconfident swimmers! It can be very hot in the sun in summer so slip, slop, slap! If you are visiting NZ please stop here. This beach and town is real NZ!

You need to go on a cloudy day to enjoy this beach. From the car park, you would need to walk for about 500m including conquering a massive sand dune, before you finally enjoy the breathtaking view. Worth the climb though.

Families with small kids...you'll probably end up carrying them on your back. Sand was way too hot, but I would blame the scorching sun.

Nothing much around the car park apart from a poorly maintained (read stinking) public toilet and a few free campers.

There is a MASSIVE sand dune you must overcome before you reach the beach. For people who are unfit, this is a workout BUT once you reach the bottom, it is seriously worth it. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. I was wearing sneakers and the sand was still burning my feet. Also, bring a spade to dig your hot water hole. The beach and black sand were so beautiful.
