Cozy and comfortable

Review of Moffat Inn
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Nov 2022
We stayed at the Moffat Inn for 3 nights. Upon arrival we were greeted at the front desk, checked in and received our key.
Our room was on the second floor, which was fine for us, but anyone with mobility issues may find booking on the first floor is best.
Our room was spacious, clean and nicely decorated in keeping with the Vintage Hotel vibe. The bathroom was roomy, though a bit worn looking, but had everything you need including some toiletries, and a hair dryer.
We had two double beds as well as a pullout couch in the sitting area, that also had a comfy arm chair.
Overall we were very pleased with the room. It was quiet at night, which was great for sleeping, and the beds were comfortable, though I would have preferred a firmer mattress.
The room provides a coffee maker with coffee pods, tea, powdered creamer and sugars. There was a mini fridge in the room too which would be very handy.
The Moffat is located on the main street , a pleasant stroll to restaurants, shops and theatres.
The Moffat also offers free parking in back, which we found very convenient.
I would stay at the Moffat Inn again when in NOTL.

I have stayed at this inn before because the location is excellent for seeing Shaw
performances. On my confirmation I didn't notice that we were assigned a room in
the basement. Yes, I'm saying basement. We went down a fairly narrow stairway and then arrived at a fire door that had a sign indicating it was a fire door. Then a small area with doors on 3 sides. The door on the left contained a room with all the heating and cooling equipment. The other door was locked. The door to our room was another fire door. The room was large and obviously newly done. The windows were inaccessible because they were small and very high up. Not within reach as an exit. We went for a short walk and when we got back I asked for another room. None available! I was very upset because of thinking that if there was a fire, there was absolutely no exit from this room. I didn't sleep !!! I don't scare easily. I travel a lot and stay in hotels a good 20 nights at least a year. An employee told me that this room used to be for meetings and they couldn't understand why it was made into a rental. I can....money grab. They didn't charge for the room but that didn't help with being in a room I consider extremely unsafe!
This is a very old structure! If you stay there, certainly be absolutely certain that you
do not get that basement room as there is no way out if there ever was a fire!

We were looking forward to celebrating our anniversary by returning to Canada after a 3-year Covid hiatus. We had stayed at other Vintage Hotels before and decided to try something new: the Moffat Inn.

The gentleman at the front desk was fabulous; so friendly, pleasant and helpful.

He was, it turned out, a diamond in the rough.

This place needs an updating, pronto!

We paid $360. for room #297 which was listed as a penthouse suite.

What we found were stained rugs, dated furniture, peeling wallpaper, a smell of dogs and overall unsatisfactory accommodations.

Fortunately, after speaking with the manager at the sister hotel next store we were able to switch to the Prince of Wales.

The manager there was understanding and accommodating, and our Anniversary escape was salvaged! My recommendation: Go to the Prince of Wales. It is wonderful! Staff is amazing. Room was exceptional.

Why this Inn has been neglected is anyone's guess but note to management: Please, for the sake of your guests, spend some money on capital improvements! Needs:
Carpet
Paint
Wallpaper
Polished furniture

Keep the man at the check in desk. He is your only asset at this point.

Room tip: Told our room was 'the best" If that is true- avoid this Inn

My wife has some mobility and when we arrived the lady at the front noticed this and without me asking, right away changed our booked room to a room on the main floor. CHAPEAU!!!
The room was perfect and the little balcony was a bonus to have a glass of wine after the theatre.
Well recommended and we'll be back next May.

Room tip: All very good, no noise, just comfortable.

Time for a renovation. Although clean, things were not up to par. Old tv taken out and marks remaining from the old rack.
Lobby was in sad shape as well. The bathroom had old fixtures but clean. Sad lamps. The Japanese restaurant was very good but i don’t know if it’s affiliated with the hotel.

Very conveniently located at Niagara-on-the-Lake, short walk to the Shaw Theatre, it is situated right on Picton Street, where we were surrounded by beautiful flowers and plants. The room is very well maintained, considering that this is a vintage house. The room rate was also most reasonable compared to others nearby.
I was able to find St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church right across the street, and was able to attend morning Mass before I start my day at NOTL.
