A real disappointment

Review of Oban Inn
1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Aug 2023
We have been in Niagara on the Lake many times. For this trip, we thought it would be fun to reserve The Oban Suite in the Oban House at Oban Inn. It was a mistake and a disappointment.

The suite is very nice ... a few quirks but once you got used to them, it is fine. The building in which it is located ... Oban House ... is a disaster. The noise level is incredible ... foot-steps in the room above on a very squeaky floor, dogs barking, children crying, showers being taken, and more. The neighbors were not doing anything unusual, they were just in a building that transmitted every sound.

We talked with one of our neighbors and they had the same experience. As they said, "A very nice room in a terrible building. The noise level is remarkable. We will not stay here again."

Nor will we. Niagara on the Lake has many options for out of town guests. The Oban Inn should not be among them.

The Oban Inn is very attractive from the outside, but at all costs avoid Rooms 304 and 305. They are just behind the back door to the kitchen, and the kitchen's exhaust fan, which is as noisy as a large piece of earth-moving equipment, operates until 10:30 p.m. Not only is the noise unbearable, but the exhaust fumes make the room smell like the inside of a beef grill. As the hotel was fully booked, the management was not able to give us a different room. We loved Niagara-on-the-Lake but dreaded returning to our hotel at the end of the day.

I’m not sure if the room, the spa or the restaurant were the best. They are all superb. Breakfast is to die for. My wife raves about her facial and eye treatment at the spa. Steak dinner and the shrimp plus scallops were not exceptional. Stuffed mushrooms and mussels were great too.

Endlessly disappointed in this place. Check In Always seems to involve an argument . Rooms are dated and are definitely NOT 5 star !
Food across the street at golf course far better and much cheaper ! Massage was average .
Having stayed at real 5 star hotels all over the world this place is unimpressive.
Won’t ever go again .

Unfortunately, this hotel has really gone down hill. It’s been 5 years since I’ve been there, but in that time - many things have fallen. They still advertise on the site for the infinity pool and hot springs - spoiler alert- it hasn’t been in service since COVID, and the pool needs a major clean. We booked spa services for day of arrival and were told we would be able to get into our room before hand- didn’t happen. So, we changed into our bathing suits to go to the hot springs- didn’t happen. So, we went to the spa to hang out there. It’s a room, with couches and four doors for services. The steam room is used as storage for laundry. The services themselves were amazing. We did get into our room after our services, and it was shocking how dirty the windows were, the blinds were ripped and we could hear absolutely everything in the room above us. We called to make resos for dinner and were told we could only go at 6pm because they were busy and didn’t have enough staff in the kitchen. When we arrived there were only 4 tables seated. And, then we were told there were no more mussels avail. What we did eat, was very good. At 7:30am the next day we went downstairs for coffee, and nothing was prepared - so we walked to Starbucks. They did have coffee for us when we got back. It just appears that there seems to be a lack of care for the hotel. Whoever the gardener is should be hired to get the inside of the hotel up to the standard of the flowers. So sad to see a hotel I used to love so much be neglected.

Great location to Queen St, Our room with a king size bed was roomy and comfortable. The breakfasts were very welcoming and delicious. The one dinner we had the stuffed mushroom caps, crab cakes and duck confit and all were very delicious! We will highly recommend this spot for overnight and meals. We can hardly wait to return!

Room tip: March is a low tourist season so very easy to get around, visit wineries and dine.
