The deceptive choice

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Aug 2022
The name of the hotel seems to be chosen so that it implies an association to a well known chain. The logo appears to follow the same pattern, though less obviously so (different enough so that it does not trigger visits from lawyers I guess). In any event, it feels deceptive and that is one star off right off the bat. Not let's proceed with the actual review.

Pros: location (tens of meters from Clifton Hill), well sized and reasonably clean rooms, outstanding WiFi.

Cons: location (in the seedier area of the town), must make a choice (see what I did here?) between light and privacy, ultimately uninviting.

This is obviously a no frills, old motel-like accommodation, which is fair enough. The room are accessible directly from the parking lot (ground floor) or from a long balcony along the whole facade (second floor). The rooms themselves are of a good size and clean. They feature kind of a kitchenette (microwave on top of a small fridge in a nook at the back but no counter). Our room was large enough to allow for a sitting area with a small table and a small armchair in addition to the typical large desk at the foot of the beds. The beds are comfortable. The air conditioning is an old unit somehow (but not excessively) noisy and with the temperature control on a scale from 1 to 10. We set it up by trial and error and it did a good job controlling the temperature afterward. The coin operated washing machine and dryer on the premises are nice. The pool is clean, but it is very small and placed dab in the parking lot. We did not encounter any noise issues.

In all, this is a pretty decent accommodation, well worth five stars for its class, so let's see now where did those stars go. I already mentioned one star off for the deceptiveness of the name. Another goes off for the darkness of the room. There is a big window toward the long access balcony, but it only features blackout curtains. One can have either light or a bit of privacy, but never both. Going the privacy route results in a room that is very dark and thoroughly uninviting. The only two light sources in the room are very dim.

The last star off is for a je ne sais quoi that ever so slightly keeps people away. The owners seem to be aware of this and so charge the price for the whole stay at check in, as if afraid that the customers will otherwise run away. We did not feel like running away at all, but we still resented the upfront charge. Additionally, we discovered that the rather high August rates in the Niagara touristic region fall rather steeply if one books only a few days before the stay. The owners know that too, as seen in their cancellation policy (reservations cannot be cancelled in the last week before the stay, when the full price rather than the usual first night will be charged). Again, there is nothing wrong with this policy per se, just kind of sneakily deceptive. Were this policy not in place we would have stayed in Niagara at a three-star hotel for only a minor additional charge.

In all we could have done better, and will certainly do better in the future should we find ourselves in the area again.

Thank you for staying at the Choice Inn by the Falls. Cancellation policies are there for a very good reasons. Location is one of the best in Niagara Falls just 2 minutes walk to the Clifton hill and world famous Niagara Falls. Its a 2.5 star hotel but the amenities are provided here more than four star hotels without any additional cost. We stayed here one night in a double bed room. It was clean and comfortable. It’s in a good location, within walking distance to the tourist area. The staff were very friendly. If you are looking for an affordable place to stay with no bells or whistles this could be the place for you.

The good news. Truly is within walking distance of everything, even for this arthritic senior citizen. The beds are wonderful. The shower is wonderful. The blackout curtain is super. Something kept out the noise from the street. ( not the noise from kids running around above us, but that was minor) it has microwave and refrigerator and freezer. Price is affordable. Rooms were clean. AC worked beautifully.

Know in advance, the hotel area is underwhelming at first glance. Niagara Falls hasn’t beautified the area. Also, choice inn should not advertise their pool. It’s perhaps the size of two hot tubs. They should put a phone in the room so you can call the front desk.

The only real downer is, in my experience, they don’t answer emails. Ever. I had to call them to get answers. Granted, their confirmation email was finally found in my spam folder. Maybe my emails ended up in their spam. Who knows

Despite the few negatives, the experience warranted a high rating because of all the positives. I’d stay there again. Slept well, and safely. Easy walking distance to so very much. What else do you really need.

Room tip: Only noise was kids running around above us. Wasn’t a deal breaker. Ask for upper room if this is a problem.

We booked the family suite, which featured three double beds, at a very affordable price. Staff (I assume an owner?) were friendly, and efficient right from check-in to check-out. I had little interaction with any staff, but it was always pleasant.

We had a apartment sized fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Room was quite large, and had a divider that separated off one of the beds to make a bedroom (the pictures of the room on the website are accurate). Nice feature to have when you want some privacy from the kids. Room had two sinks with mirrors, one in the bathroom and one just outside of it...which is great when two girls are doing hair and makeup.

They made good use of space with the amount of furniture. Downside was that there was only one dresser, and two beds didn't have an actual bedside table. However, there was plenty of surfaces to put our stuff.

The room was quite clean, but showed some signs of age. You can tell that they've done upgrades, and I'm sure over time it'll be great. I did especially like the flooring instead of carpet. Just felt that much cleaner. Outside was clean as well, and felt maintained.

It was very quiet. You could hear outside noise, but no drug addicts and such like other reviews have suggested. Even coming back fron Clifton Hill at 2am had us coming back to a very quiet place. It was really nice after a long day.

The motel is located a short walk away from the top of Clifton Hill, is in eyesight of the Greg Frewin Theatre, and an eight minute drive to a Zhers and Dollarama.

I have little complaint about the whole experience. I would have liked it better if the family suite had a kitchenette, or a few more appliances like a toaster (we just happened to bring our own). The beds were a little hard but not unbearable. And maybe in the family suite an extra chair.

I likely will return.

Room tip: Parking is $10/day Bring your own coffee filters and coffee, we did and it was worth it...even though they provide some...we just drink more than that.

I stayed here for 2 nights in September. I had a 2 queen room. This is a smaller, budget motel just steps from Clifton Hill. It was clean, a good size and had free parking. I walk alone day or night and had no issues, there are always people around. I have no complaints, I'd stay here again.

When we decided to visit Niagara Falls on a Saturday night on short notice, we were looking for a location near Clifton Hill that would be comfortable enough to stay in for one night without breaking the bank. Many hotels were four hundred dollars or more and the Choice Inn was half that price. I recommend, if you intend to book, booking directly through their website which, in our case, offered a significant discount from the aggregator sites, including this one.

On the positive side, this establishment had a clean room that smelled like disinfectant on arrival. The rooms have plenty of space. The pool, which we did not use, appeared crystal clear. The towels appeared freshly replaced. Parking was free, which was tantamount to an additional $20 savings. Clifton Hill is right there.

On the negative side, although apparently recently renovated, the rooms are still somewhat in an old style. Our bathtub was blue. The rooms are not particularly quiet, and despite being on the top floor, we awoke a few times from noise. It was also common to walk by people sitting outside their rooms smoking, which is their right and certainly better than in room smoking, but isn't appealing to us.

I may have given 4 or 5 stars on value alone, but on checkin, I was asked to pay an additional 10 dollars for the third member of our party (our daughter) who was clearly mentioned in our online reservation. When confronted with the booking confirmation, the clerk said it was because she thought it was a third adult and not a child. But when I went to the room, online it would have been 5 and not 10 dollars more even if our third had been an adult. In summary, make sure you know how much your reservation is for when checking in. That was a minor issue but not one I particularly liked having to deal with.

Thank you for choosing the Choice inn by the falls for your stay. Our team at the Choice Inn looking forward to serve you again in the future. Please note that extra adult fees is $10 per night and up to two children's under 12 years of age can stay free of cost as long as the occupancy rule are met . Any additional child would cost $5 per night.
