I was torn in writing about this place, as it qualifies as a "best kept secret" and of course I'd like to be able to stay in the future, and at the same kind of price point. In the end, I am overwhelmed by how wonderful the place was overall, that I just have to share.
It is a 3 star hotel. It also redefines the possibilities of a 3 star hotel. The setting is absolutely spectacular, with 360 degree views from the castle grounds. It is imposing architecture, and the views of the rolling hills all around are absolutely breathtaking.
Of course, the hotel has the furniture, bedding, baths, etc of a 3 star, so don't expect luxury, as it isn't luxury. But if it were luxury the hotel would lose its character. There are antiques everywhere, the stairs creak when you walk on them, and the rooms are furnished with washbasins and old timey stuff.
The staff are unfailingly helpful, and made all kinds of bookings for us, gave us all kinds of great information, including an introduction to one of the top wineries in the area which resulted in a lot of wine buying and a lot of wine drinking as well as private tours of the cellars of one of the top wines of Barolo.
Lovely breakfast room with a fire in the morning.
The bathrooms were a bit okay, and the shower head and faucet were a bit wonky, and there was no water pressure, but overall it didn't matter. It would be terrible if they felt they had to do the place up and then felt they had to raise prices as the combination of what it is today is exactly what it should be.
Cannot recommend this hotel enough.
