We love history and seeing the way people lived many years ago...rich or poor! The information pamphlets were really well done so it was easy to follow and look for things in each room.

The Craigdarroch Castle is just outside downtown Victoria. It is open daily for self guided tours. It was built in the 1890s for Western Canada’s richest family at the time, the Dunsmuirs. The house is full of stunning stained glass, each window told a story. The rooms have some original artifacts as well as period pieces. he castle is the highest point in Victoria and had incredible views of the surrounding areas. It was used as a military hospital during the First World War so there is lots of history here. The place has been beautifully restored. Make sure you stop and talk to the volunteers so they can tell you the stories about the place and the people that resided in it.

We spent about an hour at the castle and really enjoyed our time. My 12 year old grandson is really into history so this was a real plus for him. It will be nice when they got more of the rooms restored. But well worth the time and money.

This was the neatest place to visit. You can walk from downtown, but the bus goes right there as well. It looks small, until you get inside! Wow! Reasonable fee (adult student rates too)

Craigdarroch is a beautiful castle, planted right smack in the middle of a residential area. The last time we went, we walked up from the main shopping/restaurant street (Douglas, I believe), and though we weren't sure where it was, the towers looming above the trees were a very good guide.

The inside of the house is awesome -- a real Victorian upper-class home, beautifully furnished, artwork everywhere, and beautiful polished wood staircase, floors, and walls. The windows are glazed with stained glass scenes, and the displays really take you right back in time. It's a real surprise, and one of the best places to visit in Victoria!
