This is a great place for a pit-stop and a quick walk around.
I honestly thought it would be a giant waterfall, not too sure why I did. Even though it was not what I thought it would be it was still very beautiful.
Great place to take a few pictures and stretch your legs. There is options do more longer trails if you would like.
The falls are not quite as impressive as nearby Athabasca Falls (Athabasca Falls are larger), but Sunwapta is definitely worth a stop if you are driving the Jasper-Banff Highway, as it is only a short drive off the highway. The canyon downstream from the falls is also very impressive. Lots of parking.
But please - don't ignore the signs to stay behind the fences. The fences are there for a reason. It was very disconcerting to see two or three people climbing the fences and getting very close to the falls so they could get photos beside the falls. People die at this location every year because of that behaviour.
This is another worthy stopover along the Icefields Parkway. The upper falls is just a short walk from the parking lot. It was a weekend when we went so it was quite crowded. If you have time, do the short hike to the lower falls. It’s a nice peaceful walk through the the woods and a nice break from driving.
Sunwapta Falls is unique as it has an island right in the middle of the river before the drop off.
Very easy to get to off the highway, it's a must stop for anyone traveling the Columbia Icefields.
The road between Banff and Jasper has so many amazing sights and these falls are one of them. Easy access and well planned paths make for an enjoyable stop to enjoy these wonderful falls.
