We have many communal areas that you can rest and relax including the downstairs main living areas, outside patio area, 2nd floor balcony, or our favourite the open air palapa space on the 3rd floor of the property (although sometimes in use for workshops or therapies) where you can take in the sights and sounds of the neighborhood, bask in the cooling ocean breeze and watch the sun set. On the 2nd floor is our healing room which is sometimes in use for massages, but at other times can be used as a quiet space for meditation.
We have an extensive library of health and wellness books that you are welcome to check out when you arrive and check back in on your departure.
We are a healing retreat center, so during your stay there will be a large variety of healing activities taking place at the Sanctuary which will also be available for you to experience if you wish. We find that a lot of our guests come and stay with us to have a break from their holiday. Sometimes a special Healing Retreat will be taking part during your stay. If you would like to join the retreat, you may do so subject to space for an additional fee.
If you are looking for something different, interacting with authentic people, learning new information about health and wellness, trying some fresh delicious and healthy foods and beverages, then this is the place for you.

I stayed at Sanctuary for 5 weeks. What a wonderful experience. Eating Vegan for that time was a real treat. My objective was three fold
1. Lower blood sugar (cut carbs & walking)
2. Loose weight (vegetables)
3. Improve flexibility. (Yoga)
I'm please to report that I was very successful in all three.
I was amazed to discover how varied and tasty a Vegan diet can be.
The Chef prepares the meals each day with the help of contributing guests.
Peter (owner) and all the myriad of guest made my stay so very pleasant.
Anyone looking to recharge and renew must include a stay at Sanctuary.
Plan to stay awhile, you'll be glad you did.
The pricing options which allow you to contribute your time to reduce your cost are exceptional.
I can go on and on about what a wonderful experience it is to stay here.
The long beautiful beach is a short walk away and features surf and awesome sunsets.
The climate is just right.
Also, as you may expect, the photos exactly represent the property as I found it.
Do yourself a favour, plan to visit Sanctuary.
I know I'll be back again.

Healthy & Fun!
Staying at The Sanctuary changed my life. I thought I was only in for some health juices and learning a little yoga and meditation on the beach, but instead I had the chance to become a part of a community working together in learning and teaching. I've never felt so good physically as I did during my two week stay at The Sanctuary, thanks to the breathing work, the yoga, and the healthy diet. I thought I would never survive without meat or cheese, but instead it was actually really easy! Everyone that was staying there was very supportive, and I couldn't have had such a great experience without the staff and crew. Thank you so much!

The Sanctuary - a place to be yourself, relax, surf, unwind and
I stayed at the Sanctuary for a week and a half in July - the Sanctuary was exactly that "A Sanctuary" a place for me to just relax, unwind, surf, hang out with authentic people and focus on myself.
The establishment is located in a quiet part of Puerto Escondido very near (10mins walk) the popular surfing beach Zicatela. Being an avid surfer myself I loved that the beach was so close with the point break another 10 mins walk once you get to the beach. For a small deposit they even leant me their surfboard. Sure I could have stayed at a cheaper hostel a little bt closer to the beach but the Sanctuary offered me so much more than what any hostel could offer.
The real magic is what they are creating - which is a place where you can come and evolve either as an individual or as a small or large group. They aim to help you move forwards on all levels physically, emotionally, spiritually. Included in my stay was their regular yoga classes, african dance, daily fresh organic juice and breakfast and a cooked vegetarian lunch - I did not even need to eat an evening meal! They are also actively involving the local community in all of their programs and events.
Pete the owner is a great guy, he is the visionary for the space and what it is evolving into. Although he has now overseas looking to start another place and has handed over the daily operation to a manager.
Other aspects I loved about the Sanctuary:
- It is a massive villa with three levels, the Palapa on the 3rd level is awesome
- They treat you as part of your family from the time you arrive and even after you leave - I have made some lifelong friends from my stay.
- There is always something happening e.g. yoga, meditation, day trips, going out to a cafe, going shopping at the local market
- It is in the heart of a local neighbourhood - so you get a true local experience, however a 10min walk and you are amongst local bars and restaurants.
If you're looking for something different this is the place for you.

About the neighbourhood
Our house is set in very large walled gardens in a suburban area of Puerto Escondido called La Punta. Although there is sometimes music from neighbours, cockerels crowing, dogs a barking and occasional advertising vans playing there slogans ('Gas de Oaxaca' :-), The Sanctuary is still a peaceful place.
A 500 metre walk will see you standing on the beach where you can swim or just hang out. From there a 20 minutes walk one way will take you to the famous Zicatela surfers beach, and 5-10 minute walk in the opposite direction will take you closer to La Punta with some tourist/surfer restaurants and shops & to the point where there are also lots of surfers.
A collectivo (shared taxi) ride into town takes you to the central market which is about a 10 minute ride away and costs just 5 pesos. There are a variety of beaches within easy collectivo or taxi ride, some being more suitable for surfing and some for swimming, depending upon the conditions of the season/day.

How to get there
Directions
Coming from Puerto Escondido centre, heading on the highway in the direction of Pochutla and Huatulco, take the first turn right to La Punta, at Rubi's mini-super. At the bottom of the hill turn left into Brisas de Zicatela heading away from the sea (do not turn right towards Casa Mar and the sea), go past Internet Zicatela and take the second turn left into Quintana Roo. You will then see our beautiful house (see picture above) half a block ahead of you.
Alternatively, on the highway you could continue past Rubi's mini-super and take the 1st concrete road turn right into Quintana Roo (no sign). Continue 1.5 blocks and you will see our house.
Transfer from Bus station: You can take a taxi ( 40 pesos). Aqui estamos! Here we are! The ride from the bus station is about 15 mn.
Directions from outside of Mexico
If you are travelling from outside of Mexico (for most people this is from the US) the best way is to make your way to Mexico City. There are many airlines that fly to Mexico City from the US (US Airways, Delta, United Airlines, etc) most of which if you book far enough in advance are quite cost effective
Then from Mexico City fly to Puerto Escondido. The main airlines that service this route are Vivaaerobus and Aeromar
The cheapest is usually Viva-aerobus where you can pick up a flights from $40 USD if you book 2 to 3 months in advance. They are however a little sneaky by limiting the weight allowed for checked baggage to 15 kgs and they make an extra charge for paying by card, which is the only way you can pay!
An alternative is to fly to Huatulco then take the approx. 2 hr bus ride from Huatulco to Puerto Escondido. Interjet Huatulco from Mexico City and offer more generous luggage allowance than the other airlines.
If you want to take the bus it is about a 12 to 17 hour bus ride from Mexico City the last 6-8 hours of which is very, very, windy roads. ADO charge about 800 pesos, and ETN Turistar charge around 1,000 pesos, but their buses are more luxurious and the trip is shorter.
Transfer from Airport - There are some choices. You can take an airport approved (approved to charge 2 or 3 times the usual price) dedicated white taxi at a cost of around 150 pesos. Or, you can take an airport approved shared taxi for about 70 pesos.
Alternatively you can walk to the highway (approximately 700 metres from airport exit), cross the road and get a green and white taxi at a cost of 40 - 50 pesos. Or, from the highway wave down a maroon & white shared taxi or a collectivo (pick up truck with canopy over the back and bench seats inside). Both of these cost 6 pesos.
Aqui estamos! Here we are! The ride from the bus station is about 15 mn.
