Check in was quick and friendly, reception lady said we have been an upgraded room.
We were taken to our room and it was very clean and spacious.
Fridge and optics were topped up.

Staff in all areas were friendly and happy to help.
Animation team were great and not pushy.

Pools in need of renovation, tiles missing and broken.
Swim up bar pool had debris etc floating and also need to be renewed.

Gardens and outside areas are picturesque as are the outside of buildings.

Beach plenty of sunbeds and a few hammocks, we loved chilling on them with a drink.
What let the beach down was the seaweed it was relentless, staff tried hard to remove but to no avail, the staff had it piled up in piles ready to Bury it and the smell was just awful like rotten eggs!!!
It's a shame we only went to the beach twice because of the sea and beach and sea was full of IT.. . NO PARADISE FOR OUR STAY! NOT HOTELS FAULT, it just felt like groundhog day around pool everyday.

Restaurants, Food was of a good standard and well presented,The chefs came out to check on food several times

Drinks top shelf and a wide range of brands also mimosa at breakfast with fresh orange juice.

The reason I only gave 3 stars is the beach and pools spoiled it for us.
Everything else was good.

We could use and we did visit several other Rui in the area but we only liked the other Rui Palace, pools were plenty and clean, staff were very friendly to us when we visited for the day.

Dear nocloudsonlysunshine,

Many thanks for your feedback, as this allows us to see our hotel from a guest perspective.

As a service-oriented hotel chain, we are delighted to read that overall you enjoyed your stay with us and that you especially highlighted our gastronomy, beverages, picturesque gardens and our staff’s hospitality.

In regards to the beach, we hope you will understand that certain times of the year and due to where this resort is situated seaweed can accumulate depending on winds and tidal flows - which is something beyond human´s control and a completely natural occurrence.

Since this particular beach is public, it´s maintenance is done by the local authorities and it is important to understand a coastal zone as a living & natural environment and not just a recreational attraction.

We do hope to welcome you back to one of our worldwide hotels in the near future to deliver another enjoyable experience you well deserve.

With our best wishes we remain,

Hotel Riu Palace Riviera Maya

A bit late with this review as we travelled to this hotel in June and returned home mid July. We had a great holiday and were treated exceptionally well by all of the staff. We had travelled to this hotel before in 2011 for our anniversary and had a great time there also, so we decided to give it another whirl. Glad we did because it was just what we needed after a tough first half to the year.
The hotel hasn’t changed in the period since we were last there and is as grand as ever. It is a beautiful property and it’s only the rooms that let it down slightly as they are a bit worn and tired looking. Whilst there we heard that the hotel is to be refurbished spring 2019. Hopefully, they don’t take away too much of its colonial character and turn it into a modern monstrosity. Its sister hotel in Punta Cana, an exact replica of RPRM, was refurbished this year, and the lobby especially is dreadful. Change the rooms, just freshen up everywhere else.
The staff and restaurants are what really sells this hotel. Every member of staff looks after you well and for those people who find the need to complain about staff, I generally think it matters how you treat people is how you will be treated in return. A special mention to Esteban, manager of the buffet who could not do enough for us. Always had a smile and whenever we asked something of him he was more than willing to help when he could, even arranging special dinners in other restaurants for us for friends we had met whose birthdays it was. Also, Frank, breakfast tender in the buffet in the mornings always had a table ready for us to sit at and ran after us whenever we were there. All the restaurant staff were equally as good. Again, big shout out to Freddie and Rodrigo at Krystal. Rodrigo again was more than happy to organise special tables and treated us like royalty, expecting nothing in return. In the Mexican restaurant, Mendez was great, again chatting away and making our whole experience wonderful, whilst Gerardo the waiter served us on every occasion and was a fun and lovely guy.
Around the pool, the bar staff and waiters could not do enough for you and ran off their feet all day long. Look out for German and Roney especially as these guys deserve special praise, whilst Joe always had a smile on his face and spent time trying to teach us some Mayan!
Overall, we had a great time and will look to return again depending on how they remodel the hotel. However, the staff are this hotel’s biggest asset and when you’re there please give them all your respect and if you can, tip them well. They don’t look for it and they’ll not treat you any differently if you don’t but they’ll sure appreciate you for it if you can reward their hard work and endeavour.

We just returned from week stay at the Hotel Riu Palace Riviera Maya. This was our 4th trip to Mexico and first at a Riu resort. In my opinion, this is not a five star resort. The service was amazing! We did a deep sea fishing trip and Javier at Don Manolo cooked up the most amazing dishes with the Red Snapper we brought back with us! It was a definite highlight of the trip! The food at this resort is very good. But, the hotel itself, it quite dated and run-down. The pool is not as big as it appeared in the pictures. We still had a great time, but we did do more excursions on this trip as our kids were getting a little bored at the resort. I heard there was a kids club, but it did not appear to be very big and the kids pool was TINY (not much bigger than the round plastic kiddie pools). Again, we still had a good vacation, but I don't see our family returning to this resort.

This was our second visit to the Hotel Riu Palace Riviera Maya, and we still love it........but this time we have dropped a star because there seemed to be a lot more beach sellers wondering through the palm tree grounds of the hotels beach, selling trinkets, jewellery and cigars, also poolside entertainment was far to loud, you cant get away from the music once it starts.
Themed restaurants are ok, but you cant beat the main buffet, which caters for all tastes...first class, looked forward to going in there morning, noon and night.
Hotel is due for an upgrade, showing wear and tear in certain areas, manager said it will probably happen after easter next year over a period of between eight and ten weeks, hopefully keeping the "colonial" feel to the hotel.
First visit was Feb 2017, this time July 2018, and both times seaweed was a problem on the beach on some days, would still return, as staff, surroundings, food and resort are great.
