Beautiful Grounds, Great Location, and Amazing Pool

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 21 Jan 2011
We were in Cancun for our friends wedding at the Moon Palace, and decided to come to Cancun early thanks to a promotional offer I had received from Starwood. We were thrilled that we came early!

When you walk into the check-in area you are looking directly into the massive pool area and the clear blue Gulf water. They say a first impression can go a long way, and the Westin Lagunamar leaves a spectacular first impression.

The location of the hotel is great, as you are right across the street the La Isla outdoor mall where you can pick up any toiletries or other items you may have left behind. It's a nice place to walk around after an evening meal or if you need a Starbucks fix.

The rooms were terrific, with a full-kitchenette. A washer and dryer in the room is a nice bonus as well that you get with this being a timeshare resort. The beds are of course the amazing Westin beds, and the views from the rooms are amazing.

The pool is absolutely the best part of the resort. It is a two-tier pool, and the top-tier includes a waterslide. It isn't a theme park waterslide, but it's pretty enjoyable on a warm summer day. The infinity pool on the bottom-tier gives you amazing views out into the clear beach waters.

The workout room is more than adequate and the grounds of the resort are very well kept. The front desk was very helpful in currency exchanges and with getting our excursion tickets printed.

There are only a couple of negatives and they are nowhere near big enough to affect the enjoyability of your stay . The internet is spotty around the resort and even somewhat in the rooms. However, the internet was generally able to be used to when needed. If you do not own a timeshare you may be pushed to take a tour of the property. We were called daily asking if we wanted a tour and tried to make it clear we weren't interested. It was slightly annoying to receive a daily call about this, but not annoying enough to ruin our stay at all.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back to the Westin Lagunamar and take advantage of their spectacular views and pool!

just returned on 1/16. the resort was great. someone always cleaning, pruning, cutting, polishing, even cleaning handrails, and elevators. very impressed. marriana, our concierge, was so helpful, making reservations and assuring our stay was good. muy bien marriana. pool and beach in january, what more can i say. ocean was rough, red flags out. not good for kids, or adults, but the colors were beautiful.restaurants to recommend, harrys prime , or gustinos at the jw marriott. both suburb, expensive, but worth the price. the mall across the street was nice, with upscale stores with inflated prices, shop at home. downtown cancun, we had a little language problem, but my high school spanish helped. no safety issues at all. the mexican people, whether in the resort, or downtown were always willing to help, smile, and took time to help, if we needed it. go there, enjoy the mexican culture, sun, sand ocean, and possibly mucho tequila.let me know if you are going and i can write you with more info

This was my second stay at the Westin Lagunamar on business. The hotel is an all-villa Starwood Vacation property ideally located in the center of the hotel zone across from La Isla mall. There's never a shortage of pool chairs here! They have what appears to be thousands.

The room has a full kitchen (and fully stocked I might add!). The room is a bit cramped, but is nicely appointed in typical Westin style.

The restaurant breakfast was great. I know all Westins have the SuperFoods breakfast now, but this one really stood out for me-- great presentation, appropriately portioned, and great tasting.

The Unwind happy hour at night (2-for-1) drinks made up for the lack of any kind of club lounge, that is if you don't mind big plastic cups (think high school house party). I didn't mind. The drinks were huge and cheap!

We are owners with Starwood, but this was our first trip to the Lagunamar resort. The resort is beautiful, unbelievable views. (We lucked out and received a room on the end of building 1.) I found this resort to be quiet, but we were there during the off season, not too many kids around. I was told the first phase (they are building phase two which will be adults only) can be quite loud during peak times.

We stayed in a studio room. It was fine for just the two of us. My only real complaint about the room was we needed a place to hang our wetsuits to dry and we had difficulty finding something to hang them from. Usually we can hang them over the shower door or another door, but the doors go all the way to the ceiling! Our room was missing a few items, but we called and the items were brought up promptly. (Although trying to describe the plug for the bathtub to someone who primarily speaks spanish was fun.)

Our concierge Delphinia was wonderful. She contacted us by email and phone, prior to our arrival and was there when we arrived. She met with us to explain the resorts ammenities and to find out what we wanted to do with our vacation to see if she could help arrange any excursions.

We did go to an owners timeshare update meeting. Not required, but it was worth the 90 minutes. We were offered a great upgrade on our timeshare, and when we declined they were very gracious, not pushy at all. (Thanks Glenn) We were even given a resort credit because our owners meeting didn't start when it was supposed to.

We didn't eat at any of the restaurants on property, but took full advantage of our kitchenette. (I wouldn't recommed using the studio for cooking if more than 2 people are in the room though.)

Great location, directly across from La Isla mall. Within walking distance to several other shopping centers.

Buses stop frequently in front of this resort. Plus if you go to downtown all you have to do is catch a bus back that has a Westin sign in the front window. We went downtown twice, once specifically to go to Walmart for groceries the other to go to Market 28 (ended up at walmart again after not enjoying Market 28.)

My only compaint would be the hot tubs were not even luke warm. Not sure if this was because of the cold snap that hit the area or if it was a mechanical problem. The Thermometer in the hot tub was 89 degrees! Brrrrr.

We are members of the Royal Resorts but had a special offer from Interval International and wanted to get out of the cold.. we missed one of the biggest snowstorms of the year... made an exchange into the Westin Laguanmar for a lock off unit... We usually stay in 2 BR units, so I wasn't sure we would be happy in the lockoff.. however, we were given a prime location on the top floor right in the middle of the hotel ...The lock off (studio) was more than adequate for the two of us with a room bathroom, kitchenette and comfortable Westin bed... Right across the street from La Isla Shopping Mall. We enjoyed some new restaurants this trip and discovered the new Playboy casino in Cancun... a nice addition. and free wireless internet. All in all, another nice week in Cancun.

My family (myself, husband, toddler daughter) loved it here. We stayed in a 1-bedroom suite and were so happy to have a kitchen to prepare food for our toddler and washer/dryer for all those wet beach/pool clothes and bathing suits. I looked at a lot of Cancun resorts and didn't see any others that offered complete kitchens and washer/dryers, so that was why we chose this one. It was an excellent choice. It was very modern and clean, and the resort grounds could not have been nicer. We loved the huge pools (one was kept at a very nice warm temperature), and the beach was immaculate and staffed by very vigilant lifeguards. I recommend stocking up at the Walmart Superama before you get there-- we bought fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese, crackers, cereal and other things our toddler would eat, plus a big jug of water. It was fun shopping in Mexican supermarket. It is also fun walking across the street to "La Isla" shopping mall in the evening. Lots of restaurants and shops, plus activities for older kids like trapeze-style jumping. It is definitely an advantage to be such a short walk from this mall, as others have to take cabs or walk a long ways to get there. All in all, a beautiful resort, great location. And don't worry about the timeshare part-- I was concerned about getting coerced into a sales pitch, but they only called to offer a welcome package and we just didn't take them up on it.
