Good Hotel but small and noisy.

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Mar 2023
The Hotel looked recently remodeled. Lobby area and ground floor look really nice. The place is very clean and they have friendly staff. Ray and Jaime were very friendly and helpful. Rooms are a good size the only complain is that are a bit noisy when others open faucets, it makes a loud noise. Beds are not the best but comfortable. Pool area and restrooms are clean. Pool area is small compared to the amount of guests using the facilities. Not enough beach front chairs or beds. This hotel is very inexpensive but very noisy if you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy the beach. Bands are always playing and are too loud. Sometimes they can go on for hours. That is the only reason I would not stay at this hotel again. We were hoping for a more relaxing stay. We were two adult people with no kids.
Date of stay: March 2023
Room Tip: Pool are is too crowded and beach front chairs are not enough. bands are too noisy and playing...

We had a great stay here. All of the staff were outstanding, but a special shout out to Fernando, who went above and beyond to help when I needed assistance to go to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Our junior suite on the 10th floor had an amazing view and we loved our beach walks.

Such an interesting place. It had many pluses including a great staff, great sunsets, nice breakfast bar, comfortable beds, good grade linens and great shower. For an old building , they’ve taken care to keep things updated but parts are tired. Old cabinets, rusted hinges and tasteful but in need of replacing artwork. It’s a good location with easy access to good restaurants and nice beach walks. Would we return? Yes as it’s clean and you are well taken care of, it’s just a bit tired in some areas.

First of all every person in the dining area, housekeeping, bar area and pool/beach area were awesome. We met so many people that we would be forever friends if we lived closer. I am not going to name any specific persons because I don't want to accidently leave anyone out. Now the people who work behind the glass or the front desk people were another type of animal. They were not friendly and never smiled and if you asked any questions they seemed to be annoyed or bothered. UGH...This review is my opinion based on what we experienced ourselves. Our original room was a suite. It was very sub standard for a suite in our opinion. We are tolerant of some things as Mexico standard may not be the same as US standard. Leaky faucets, leaky shower burned out light bulbs. We got the bulbs changed and the leaks were fixed with towels. Not quite enough to change suites. Then we saw the cockroaches. I killed one with my hand and took it down to the front desk at 10PM. The person there said we could change rooms. I was very un impressed with how this was handled. After reporting the roaches and showing him one in person, the front desk person took a photo of it and left in a room benind the glass. I never saw him again. We do not know the process of room/suite change after insects and I was left standing there. I went to the suite to pack. We encounted a bell hop person who told us to pack up and then call 0 on the phone and some one would be up for the luggage. We made that call and no one ever answered the phone at the front desk. I go down there and a different person is at the front desk and he looks at me and says...are you the guy in 416, the roach suite, I say yes and he gets up and disappears into the room behind the glass and we never see him again. The bell hop appears after we have loaded our own luggage cart and hauled it down to the lobby. The Royal Villas Resort attempts to downgrade us to a room after having paid for a suite. Our new friend bell hop goes behind the glass and argues on our behalf for a better suite not a cheaper room. This is unreal how they treated us after we complained about cockroaches in our bed and on the wall. We were moved to a nicer suite on a top floor only because a very kind bell hop was our advocate. Yes, the oompa bands play all day and the pool area is not a place to enjoy peace and tranquil rest. The cruise ships are allowed to let their passengers come to the resort. For the afternoons they are there Royal Villa guests must find fun elsewhere. Overall this resort is typical in that the front of the entrance and foyer are nice but the rooms/suites are tired and worn out. Not really very clean and they smell funny. There are many options to stay in Mazatlan and I would not recommend anyone stay here. Noisy, smelly, unclean and rude people at the front desk. We have never stayed at a resort that had cockroaches in the bed or walls. They may be around but we have never seen them until we stayed at Royal Villas. Also, the attitude and conduct of the front desk staff after we reported the roaches was as uncaring as you could ever believe. Caveat Emptor!!

Room tip: Construction noises all day on the north side.

We have been going to Royal Villas for 23 years. In the past it has been very enjoyable.
This year , not so much.
The biggest complaint is the horrible band that plays out front on the beach. We didn’t complain about our room, which wasn’t what we believed we bought.
But being on the second floor, you couldn’t get away from the band that played continuously throughout the afternoon and into the night.
Otherwise we love the people, the waiters etc.

The resort said they upgraded us but it was one of the worst places we have stayed. There was a wedding at the resort, the restaurant closed early and room service didn't speak english and when you finally got through, no food for 1.5-2 hours. In the morning at 7:30 AM we ordered breakfast, they said 15 mins. I call to check after an hour and a half, got cut off and then they called me to tell me I gave them the wrong room
number. We didn't get breakfast until almost 11. Left us no time to go to the pool. The room was not much better. There was a leak in the bathroom pooling on the floor, no lights in the hallway and it was pitch black. There was no sleeping, just dozing until 5AM as the party went on and on. When the cars went over the grates on the street, it sounded like gun fire down. It took us 20 mins to get in the elevator to get our luggage to the lobby to check out. The remotes to the TV are given to you when you check in. After 5 tries they finally got it working. Remember you need to take the remotes back to the front desk to check out.
If you want to call the front desk, there is no information in the room how you call them. Look on the room service menu and call room service and they will give you the extension to call.
We booked this resort with the recommendation from this site. Happy some of the people think it's wonderful. We did not. Too noisy and no customer service.
