The Sounds Retreat was our final stop on a 2-week bucket list trip to New Zealand. After stops in Auckland, Fjordland Nat’l Park and Queenstown, we were ready to relax. Well… we definitely saved the best for last! The setting of the Sounds Retreat on the Queen Charlotte Sound is simply breathtaking. The suite is private, beautiful, spacious and very well-appointed – it has the feel of a Four Seasons suite. The addition of a washer/dryer was much appreciated. Tony is a gourmet chef, and the breakfasts and dinners were fabulous. Anne’s morning parfaits and evening desserts were scrumptious. Do yourself a favor and rise early for the sunrise over the Charlotte Sound – you won’t for forget it. We definitely hope to return some day…

From the first contact with Tony and Anne when planning this little indulgence in the middle of a visit to see friends in NZ we knew that this was going to be an outstanding experience. Tony provided great advice regarding how and what to book so that we got the most out of the visit, and then on arrival he and Anne made sure that everything was just perfect. Massage, meals, accommodations, conversation and advice on local sites were all of a standard befitting the marvellous location and absolute luxury of their property. This is a place that discerning travellers will find meets and exceeds all expectations, and combined with what Anne and Tony know of the surrounding area, the longer you stay the better it will get.
If there were more stars they would get them all.

Room Tip: There is no choice of room - you are the only guests and therefore get the best room in the house.

An indulgent but exceptional stay. Hard to pick a specific component - an all-round feast for the senses. The setting, scenery, the facility itself (even for its architecture), the food - and of course, Tony's hospitality. Superb.

The Sounds is a "once in a life-time" place: not a hotel really (only 1 suite) and not someone's home (you are not living with the owners - although they are personally caring for you). It is just a unique place, if money is no object ( and worth every penny you spend).
Anne & Tony are gracious, relaxed, smart and funny. He is "the cook", she the primary care-giver (but not the only one). And my personal namesake, "Bruce", the border-collie is the primary entertainment and walking guide.
We can not say enough about the "hotel" part - imagine your own private glassed-in box of a dining room, overlooking Queen Charlotte sound, steps off your private terrace overlooking said Sound. Imagine your cocktail delivered when and how you asked for it and breakfast and dinner the same (all cooked by Tony and delivered by either or both owners). Often accompanied by Bruce (unless he is chewing a stick somewhere or has been sent to his kennel).
Anne and Tony offer all sorts of adventures that we did not use - but with them was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip: the view, the food, the service....did I mention the dog??

Room Tip: There is only 1 suite: there are no tips

Tony and Anne are amazing hosts! Staying at sounds retreat was truly one of our highlights on our honeymoon! The view was by far one of the if not THE most beautiful we’ve witnessed. Anne and Tony went out of their way from making sure we knew how to get there to helping us plan our day activities and of course serving us a one of a kind personalized dinner. We HIGHLY recommend the dinner, honestly it’s more than worth it and truly a unique experience. Both breakfast and dinner featured local fresh ingredients (even fresh honey from their beehive!) and were prepared to perfection. Of course we can’t forget Bruce the most intelligent dog we’ve met! We were enamored with the sounds retreat before we met him, but after going on a gorgeous walk with him we didn’t want to leave! Overall, Anne and Tony’s attention to detail and hospitality showed throughout our stay, they did everything possible to ensure we had a phenomenal time and we’ll definitely be back!!!
