Surprise 75th Birthday For my mum

Review of Lauriston Hotel
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 13 Feb 2024
Beautiful hotel right on the beach front of Ardrossan. We decided on this hotel to have my mums surprise party due to the view and special memories my mum had as a child with family visiting Saltcoats and Ardrossan from Glasgow.

The range of buffet had good choice and catered for including gluten free, vegetarian and welcome drinks on arrival. Staff on hand to help and assist at all times.

Family and friends stayed in the hotel and feed back was excellent dinner, breakfast and rooms , even with the high winds at the sea front.

Guests travelled from different areas and used the train station outside the hotel and disability facilities excellent.

I can’t thank the Lauriston staff enough for making my mums night so special in the giant room. Thank you.

What an awful experience.Death trap paper bath mats.
Electrical extension in to another extension. Filthy carpet on the staircase.
Sticky furniture. Badly designed tea making facilities under coat hangers.
Poor lighting on the stairs
No staff on reception in the morning to report issues to.
But the food was good

We walked in and were immediately greeted by Wendy, made to feel like returning guests. Don't be put off by the size of the hotel, sports bar with 9 TVs, room was a good size, king-size bed. The food in the restaurant was fantastic, one of our starters was haggis and black pudding scotch egg, cut into it the egg yoke was perfectly runny, big compliments to the chef very hard to get correct. Good portions. Great breakfast. The bar was really nice, set down with some locals, made to feel like we had been there many times. Enjoy

Room tip: Don't go out to eat. The restaurant is a must, enjoy

We chose this hotel because of its position on the seafront and proxiemty to the ferry for Arran. It's a little old fashioned inside & rather dark but obviously retains many of the original features which is rather nice. There is a magnificent stained glass window as you go up the stairs which looks like it belongs in some council offices or library. Our room was OK, clean, beds comfortable & all the usual complimentary things supplied. The only downside was the squeaky floorboard just by the bathroom which made it impossible to creep quietly into the bathroom during the night!! Breakfast was good & served to the table, full Scottish with cereals available too. The waitress was efficient & friendly. We only stayed one night before getting the ferry but would stay again.

Room door had to be forced open and closed, bathroom door did not close, bathroom really small, returned first meal on Friday night as was cold, second meal was at least warm, dessert was poor, coffee machine not working. Could not go out hotel before breakfast without having to spend ages pressing a door bell to get in. Kept getting told it was because of licensing laws, not true as getting in and out of a hotel in the mornings is covered by this. Will never use this hotel again. Only plus was waiting staff were pleasant.

Room tip: Do not get room 3 and eat out for dinner

Let me take a moment to address your comments.whilst the doors to bedrooms are heavy & tight fitting (for fire safety reasons), they certainly do not require to be forced open. Apologies re the ensuite door , which may be small but is perfectly fitted out with bew modern fixtires , fittings and waterfall shower, this has happened in the past but we're sure this had been rectified, we can only assume the door had swollen due to the excessive heat, however as uou were staying with us 2 nights had you of let us know of your inhappiness with room this could have easily been rectified. In reference to your food , all food is probed whilst being plated ensuring correct service temperature and apologise if perhaps there was a delay receiving your food , due to the ongoing medical emergency with a guest at an adjacent table resulting in your food sitting before being served. This was quickly rectified and a replacement meal served at the correct temperature. Regarding your dessert , it is unfortunate some guests do not recognise the difference between Italian meringue and that of the meringue of bought in cheap lemon meringue, however we understood your disappointment and both items were removed from uour bill as a goodwill gesture.whilst we were awaiting the return of the coffee machine engineer , filter coffee was still available in cafetieres.on a final note the decked area where youvrequested access is locked outwith service hours which is part of the licensing plan and the main doors are also locked at such early hours for security of not only the building but guest and staff. Whilst you obviously found this irritating it us a measure followed until opening times resume.
