Restaurant needs a new chef, & manager who cares

Review of Lauriston Hotel
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Jul 2023
Went for an anniversary meal.we have been before,in fact had meal for anniversary last year which was lovely. What an absolute disappointment. Got steak asked to be cooked medium & ensure no blood. Couldn't eat chunk of it as that's what I got. But what was worse the chips were totally tasteless cheap oven ones. The side of onion rings again were obviously the same. The Runny red wine sauce was a disgrace. We would normally have had a dessert followed by coffee & couple of cocktails. But was so annoyed at poor quality just phoned a taxi. When I mentioned to waitress, she went away & came back to say manager was too busy to come & speak to us but to send in an email. I also asked for a glass of water which never arrived. It is the first time I have not left a gratuity when out for a meal. We had planned to make an appointment to enquire about booking for our Golden wedding in 2025, this certainly won't be happening.

It is interesting to read your review of your most recent visit and your opinion of such. We are of course disappointed you didn't enjoy your visit but are pleased that on the plates cleared from your table it would suggest you did indeed enjoy the food ? apart from the onion rings , which clearly distressed you . It is disappointing that rather than e mailing the hotel directly as suggested you took to the likes of tripadvisor to vent .

Table service but when ordering food made to pay 20 min before it arrives.Very Wetherspoons or Mcdonaldsy.Seems to only apply to customers in the terrace area.Very strange.Should maybe say order & pay at bar if you don’t trust your customers

In response to your comments yes the terrace operates differently than indoors . It is different in Many ways so is therfore operated and controlled differently a casual way which over the years has proved to be the easiest and most controlled way for both the customer and us . We apologise this wasn't to your liking if you preferred restaurant service the inside would have been the better option

Had my wedding here, big mistake! We put deposit down on price of package over a year ago and when it came to paying package they added £500 on to it. I kicked up and refused to pay it as I will not tolerate being ripped off!
What they did at my wedding was disgraceful and strongly believe they did it on purpose because I refused to pay the extra they tried to add on to bill.
Firstly, they had a curtain in ceremony room hanging down even though they knew a wedding was to happen. They cut up my wedding cake when I specifically gave instructions to 2 people that it was not to be touched and wasn't for guests. I also told them as cake was a cream frosting, it must be left in fridge and taken out 15 min before cake cutting by myself and husband and then straight to fridge again. This did not happen, they took cake out before meal in a hot room and left it there for about 4 hours! Told them I would set out my centre piece if they could set table but leave space for my centre piece and this didn't happen as they cluttered the whole table and my party and myself had to go in and move everything to get centre piece on tables. Played a very very inappropriate song before my cutting of cake by my husband and I. Didn't put guest book out after staff had told me to leave what I wanted put out in my bag next to table. 3 people had chosen the menu and all agreed on the desert but that's not what we got, we got a different desert then they tried to say the desert we had chosen wasn't on the package menu even though 3 people all said it was. I brought varies cakes to hotel in tinfoil trays for transport purpose only as I was told the cakes would be put out onto the hotels platters/trays but this didn't happen, they instead kept the cakes in the tinfoil trays and put them on the buffet table. Left an item of clothing in room and phoned up so we could go down and get it but was told by the cleaner that she binned it. Hotels have a lost property area and they knew who had been in room but after I complained by email, they all of a sudden retrieved it. Room wasn't cleaned properly as there was still coco pops on rug from previous guests and bathroom door would not close. room very dated and in need of upgrade. Breakfast was terrible, black pudding was swimming in oil and that bad it just turned to mush when the fork went in and the cafetiere wasn't working as the cup was swimming in leaves. Many guest said to me that the waiting staff were terrible as they threw down the bowls of soup and weren't helpful towards the vegetarian guests who had asked questions about their meal. Finally, I had a video camera set up by the videographer at the back and one at front and was told by friends and family members that staff stood at the back of the ceremony room talking and giggling during the service and guests were turning around to give them stares to shut up and they didn't. I am waiting on the video getting done and if I hear those staff on my ceremony video then I will be wanting a meeting with the owners. Absolutely disgraceful service, communication skills are zero between staff and management. Take heed, if your having a wedding, spend extra and go to a way better hotel or a registry office then a nice reception in a good hotel. I would have given zero stars but have to give one to write review.

Went here with my elderly parents, for dinner to celebrate joint birthday/mother's day. Both not great at walking, and dad been unwell last few weeks. The service from all the girls, was first class, and they were very patient with my mum and dad, and incredibly helpful and cheery. The food was top notch. 3 wonderful courses, and everyone as good as the last. My parents who are both in late 80s haven't enjoyed a meal like that for a long time. They're not big eaters, but they just about cleared their plates. Lovely meal, and excellent value. Deffo be back

The food and service was fantastic, however, one in our party was driving and ordered 2 pints of soda water and lime. Now, hardly an expensive choice you’d think? We got to the bill and I checked so that the “soft drinks” person wasn’t paying more than the drinkers in our company as assumed would me much less and wanted to ensure all was fair (table of 4) Couldn’t believe it when I checked the bill! Charged £4 for each of them! A pint of Lager was £4.10, how can they justify this? Absolutely ridiculous. I thought non drinkers of alcohol were meant to be treated better. Management you need to sort this out that is just crazy. I can assure you, we won’t be back if that is how you price things like that. Get it sorted! The cost of a drink like that is minimal and a “nominated driver” should not have a charge like that. I look forward to your response and confirmation that these types of drinks are fairly priced versus the cost to you.
