Princess Margaret beach and Jacks Bar/Restaurant is a four minute walk away. The only time that we could hear any sound coming from Jacks Bar was during a live music night. The live music was not overly loud and everything was silent by bed time. The rest of the time there all we really heard was the ocean waves and birds. Getting to Port Elizabeth was a fifteen minute walk along the ocean side trail. This trail starts in front of Jacks Bar and then passes by several restaurants and shops before ending at the harbour. Driving to Port Elizabeth was about ten minutes by taxi. The property owners were very kind and the place seemed pretty much deserted much of the time. There is a DVD player in the suite, lots of windows that open and good air conditioning. The kitchen was perfect for snacks, drinks and simple meals that do not require much prep work. Food and drinks can be purchased in Port Elizabeth, but St. Vincent has a bit more variety. But if fresh fruit, coffee, bread, rum and pop is all you need, Bequia’s stores are good enough. The open air private shower was beautiful and one of the best aspects of the suite. The shower is accessed from inside your suite without any chance of being seen by others. The entire place was very clean and well maintained. I never saw a single bug in the facility the entire time I was there. The suite is modern and has both types of electrical outlets. North Americans will not require an adapter. There is a binder in the suite with a list of recommended places to eat and locations to visit while on the island. The public road in was very steep and in serious need of repair, but that is more of a concern for the taxi driver than the guests. There are mosquitoes on the island, but I only noticed them when on the balcony. I can barely wait to visit A Shade of Blue again.
This was our 13th trip to Bequia. In previous years, we had stayed at the Frangipani, but decided to try something different. We spent 9 nights at the Shade of Blues Apartment and totally enjoyed the experience. We would certainly consider staying there again. The apartment itself is located on the second floor and has a separate entrance, large kitchen, two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, an outdoor shower and a large outdoor balcony with a stunning view overlooking Princess Margaret Beach and Bay. Incredible care has gone into the design of the apartment and choice of furnishings. The kitchen is very well-equipped. Access to the small downstairs swimming pool and an adjoining patio, as well as to the internet, is provided by the owners.
It is hot at night, but if you run the air conditioner for a short period of time and then open up the shutters, this seems to work fine (the owners ask that you not use the air conditioner extensively). LIke most places in Bequia, the apartment has shutters and no screens, which means lots of mosquitos. So, you will need to use repellent and coils/pad heaters. Most importantly, the mosquito nets over the beds were in excellent condition.
Some reviews have commented on the torturous number of steps from the road up to the apartment or down to Jack's Restaurant and the beach - around 180 in total from the beach to the apartment. Although a little daunting at first, this does at least burn off a few calories and there is the pool as a reward at the end of the journey. If you know Bequia, you may worry about being a little isolated (Jack's is the only restaurant on the beach), but the relatively new Princess Margaret walkway provides a quick connection to Port Elizabeth and all its restaurants and stores. There is also an easy path over to Lower Bay if you want a change of beach scenery. At night, you can arrange a taxi ride to the various restaurants with Julian, whom you will meet at the airport upon your arrival.
So, if you're looking for an alternative to a hotel and enjoy the Port Elizabeth side of the island, we cannot recommend enough this option.
Stayed 2 weeks in October and had a lovely time. Views are fantastic and the pool was a welcome cool down after the climb from the beach!
It's really a great spot to stay just above princess margarets beach and just behind jacks bar. Unfortunately due to recent storms, the Belmont walkway was broken and jacks bar was undergoing repairs, but what can you do about that? Just made us a bit more adventurous wading through the pristine sea to get to the fabulous plantation resort (great pizzas and lovely staff)
Use Julian, one of the local taxi drivers -very knowledgable and friendly and is very experienced at getting right up the driveway- very impressive!! His wife, Cass is the housekeeper and is lovely!!
The only thing I would prefer is aircon as we couldn't leave doors etc open as mosquitoes loved us.
The grounds man, ottley is really helpful too. Thank you all for making our stay on bequia great!!
