Dundrum, County Down
Myself and two friends stayed in an apartment in Dundrum for a long weekend and could not recommend it more highly. The location looking out across the bay was fabulous as was the apartment itself. We also had the two wonderful places nearby to eat - The Bucks Head and the Dundrum Inn and I would recommend booking a table ahead of your visit.
We were over to celebrate my 60th and took the opportunity to drive to Dunseverick Castle (a ruin) but then to take the coastal path to the Giants Causeway, which was spectacular and a great way to reach the Causeway. We grabbed a bus back to the car. The following day we chose to climb Sieve Binnian, which was strenuous and unluckily the cloud came in so no spectacular views. Our final day included a visit to the Gobbins, which I would recommend and would go early; it is a lovely cliff walk and experience.
Overall, Dundrum is a lovely place to visit and stay and an excellent base from which to visit other places of interest and has given me wonderful memories for my birthday celebrations and of Ireland.
This bay backs into Murlough Beach Nature Reserve. The bay is almost cut-off from the sea with just a narrow connection to the sea, but is tidal. There is lots of interest: water activities, birding, walking and so on. It is clearly a popular area. Fabulous views of the Bay from Dundrum Castle
Walked along the inner bay for some bird watching including ducks galore. Then to Dundrum Castle when John De Courcy, Early of Ulster and his knights helped the Norman expansion from Normandy across the British Isles. Today 80% of private weather in these islands is still in the hands of those descended from those knight. Next we saunted past Dundrum Dam out Murlough House to view the seals snoozing under the butss at Ballykinlar. Magical outing
I like to travel to Dundrum in my camper and chill out.
After a visit to dog friendly Paws fur Tea cafe I park up at the other side of Dundrum at the park grassy picnic area and walk along to the fishermens cottages or just around the housing area at the waters side. I have been along the bay at the Newcastle side as well.
It is a quieter spot than Newcastle and an enjoyable area tu chill out fur an evening.
Highly recommended.
I usually just have a stroll along the Dundrum path ways.
Great for dogs and when tide is in,it can be beautiful.
Plenty of parking and eating places.
Try Paws for Tea which is so dog friendly and cheap.
The Bayside catch has a little diner with nice fish.
In summer it is spectacular along here.
A hidden jewel ! Whether you like seal spotting or bird watching or just taking in the stunning views this is a magical place.
