it is not a well known fact, but Dundrum Bay is the meeting of the waters, where the tide which comes around the north of Ireland meets the tide coming up the Irish sea. Thus the tide does not have a strong directional pull, but rises and falls.
Love this place. You can access the beach in several places but all require a bit of a walk over sand dunes so you need to be mobile. Great place to walk with dogs with sea and mountain views plus the nature reserve.
Great wee spot contains pubs and restaurants, Brennan’s ice cream, National Trust walks and beaches and serene views over the bay and beyond to the Mournes.
Just walked around Dundrum with dog and nice coastline. Dundrum is quiet and quaint compared to Newcastle
But worth a visit.
I think this is the first time I've ever rated a place 'terrible'. We arrived only to have to fetch our keys from a cobweb ridden outdoor gas supply box via phone advice. There was no handover by the owner. Once we opened the door we were immediately hit by the musky, damp, dusty smell. Even though we permanently left the windows open, the smell never dispersed. The carpets, and soft furnishings were stained. On the last day I found a dubious white stain on the top master bedroom counterpane. Eeewww! Obviously all bedlinen is not washed between guests. The bed itself was broken. (they somewhat repaired it by pacing a wooden block under the frame) Although it was billed as 'no children'. the 2nd bedroom was decorated for a small girl and the 3rd for a young boy. The flat was littered with kids toys. We found personal items in a basket in the main bathroom, half eaten biscuits and sweets, abandoned flipflop an other random items in the bedroom drawers. In most holiday lets I've experienced, the owner goes out of their way to ensure there are enough basic provisions to let you get settled such as tea, coffee, sugar and condiments etc. No such luck here. There was only 2 old ice in bags stuck to the freezer floor. However, there was a dirty, empty, sugar bowl. For towels we were only given one old towel each (so no washing hair ladies). As we were only in Northern Ireland 4 days we stuck with it because we couldn't find a suitable replacement. My advice to the owners? Do a deep clean and sort out the smell before you even think of letting this place out again. Wash ALL your linen and climb out of the 1980s and have wi-fi installed. We paid in advance, so theres no hope of a refund. Lesson learned.
This sweeping bay off the Irish Sea washes the shores of some of the finest scenery in Ireland. As well as the outstanding natural beauty of the Mournes,Murlough and the myriad beaches along the bay, there are many places to go and things to do.
