Owner description: This 2.2-mile hiking trail is one of the best on St. John: descend through a shady, moist forest and a dry forest, through visible remains of four sugar mills, pass by pre-Columbian petroglyphs, and end at a beautiful, pristine beach.
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

The hike is not very intense and is not too sunny, as it runs through. There are several ruins along the hike, including the sugar plantation ruins. The trail has some great views as you go higher up the trail. Be sure to hike to the Petroglyphs waterfall.

The park service is not offering tours. Most trails are open on St John. They have done a great job.
The larger trees have gotten a hair cut but things are greening up.

Steep descend down on first mile through well maintained shady trail. Not too difficult on the way down. The hike is worth it when you finally reach the Reef Bay beach. The hike up was another story. Pretty difficult the last mile as it gets steep and I’m a seasoned runner. We had water but only a small snack. Highly recommend water for the trip not before and lunch bc you will be famished and dehydrated without.

Oh this hike! Stunning jungle trail. The steepest part is the first mile then it flattens out. Park service has done an amazing job maintaining this trail. We did it in 3 hours total with a good amount of beach time in the middle. Hiked with our 10 and 12 year old kids. Bring water and snacks. We saw deer, donkeys, hermit crabs, and nurse sharks.

So I had no idea what to expect after reading the other reviews. Some people were like don't wear flip flops. Others were like its brutal...I don't know how we got out of there.
Look! We are 2 mildly overweight, some times athletic couple in their mid 40's for reference. It took us an hour and a half to get to the beach on the way down. We took our time, stopped to see the petroglyphs. It really is a beautiful hike. But its not straight down and then you turn around and straight up. There are flat sections. The hermit crabs are really cool. The beach was empty. Beautiful seclusion. It took us an hour and half return trip. My husband struggled a little bit on the return but we just took breaks when he needed them. Highly recommend as a balance to all of the painkillers. We brought water. We each ate an apple at the beach.
