“Best Vacation Evere”
Reviewed 9 August 2016 for a stay in July 2016

The family vacation to St Lucia and residing at the Pitons Stargroves could not have been more ideal. From our arrival at the airport and Oasis Marigot setting up transport with local vendors who were incredibly accommodating, to walking into our "home" for the week....we knew the week would be fabulous. The property was even more spectacular than the pictures. Our hosts Mary and Pious became family almost immediately. Incredibly attentive while also offering all the space we needed. Mary's cooking was best creole ever and the attention to keeping the home clean was unending. The people of St.. Lucia were welcoming, warm and always lending a hand. We will return!

“A completely unique, peaceful hideaway with fantastic views”

We have had a wonderful 10 day stay at Pitons Stargroves and have found it to be one of our most memorable holidays yet.

The villa is tucked away at the side of the Gros Piton and you can completely hide away from the world while feeling at one with nature. The house is completely open on one side giving you a breathtaking view of the Petit Piton and the sea that you never stop enjoying. Even though there is no air con the house is built cleverly so that it is always shaded and the breeze circulates around the rooms so we never felt too hot. We had a few rain showers in the mornings which were a pleasure to watch from the shelter of the villa, especially when the rainbows appeared over the sea.

The villa has a well equipped kitchen, a fantastic main bathroom and a huge master bedroom. The living area is very large and has two hanging hammock chairs which were our favourite place to sit. The surrounding gardens are beautifully kept and you get a great view of them when sitting by the pool. You might see a hummingbird or two if you are lucky. The stand out feature of the house is the stargazing tower. You see so many stars at night as there is zero light pollution and the view is even more amazing from up there.

At night you get the full orchestra of crickets and night birds. It's amazing to fall asleep to with the background of the wind blowing through the trees. At dusk you can see fireflies in the trees. Make sure you bring plenty of high strength mosquito repellent and use the net provided. You have to tie it together at the sides. We found it easier to move the whole net round 90 degrees so that we could tie the sides up along the bed posts - it meant we had no gaps. I also wore long leggings and a long sleeve t shirt and mainly stayed bite free.

The house lizards keep the bugs to a minimum. They are really fun to watch. We would recommend that you keep all food and opened packets in the fridge to keep the ants at bay and be sure to clean up any crumbs or food/drink spills. It's also best to wash dishes as soon as you can after using them.

The house has a lot of steps and many light switches which take some getting used to but we had mastered it after a couple of days. We filled the advice from other reviews about bringing a small torch which came in really handy. There are separate plug sockets for US and UK devices which we found really useful. Mary and Pius who look after the villa were wonderful and always on hand to answer questions and give advice. Mary cooked for us on one night and she turned the simple ingredients we had bought into a really delicious meal. You can contact them via a cell phone which they lend you that you can top up as you need to. Pius kept an eye on the house while we were out each day which was reassuring as the house cannot be fully locked up. We just let him know when we were out and made use of the safe upstairs for valuables.

Oasis Marigot who manage the bookings strongly advised us to get a taxi to the villa from the airport and get our hire car delivered to the villa. We took them up on this and would recommend others to do the same. They booked the taxi for us and the driver was very friendly, helping us to shop for some groceries on the way. The cost was 75 USD. Mary and Pius were at the house to greet us as we arrived. Our car was also waiting for us (a day early for no extra charge as they were in the area) - we used Best Rates car rental as they had the car we wanted for a great price 550 USD for 8 days including all insurances and extra driver for free.

Driving in St Lucia is not for the faint hearted! If you hire a car make sure you get a 4x4. The roads vary in condition but some are shocking. We actually nicknamed some of the holes as they were so large ('the cliff', 'trench', etc)!!! Some roads are more like off-road tracks and quite rocky. The road to sugar beach was extremely steep. Apart from the main road everywhere is really narrow so passing oncoming traffic is challenging. All the roads have deep open drains at the side so you have to be careful not to fall down them. We had a Suzuki Jimmy which struggled a bit up some of the biggest hills but always made it and was a great little car for us, especially due to its small size making passing cars and parking very easy. You can park anywhere without a yellow line and don't ever expect to pay for parking. Watch out for pedestrians and stray dogs!

A few recommendations for the area. Martha's Table (on the road to Sugar Beach as you are coming from Soufriere) was our favourite place to eat. Great food at really reasonable prices. It is open at lunch only at the moment. The resort restaurants are very expensive. We ate at Dasheene at Ladera which was great but hefty on the wallet! The sulphur spring baths are definitely worth a visit if you can stand the eggy smell! Soufriere is a busy town. You get hassled a lot as a tourist so we only really went there for the supermarket (Eroline foods down the road from the church has everything you might need) and to do a whale watching boat trip with Mystic Man tours. This was a great experience and you have a high chance of seeing whales/dolphins as the boat guys communicate with other boats that have had sightings. We saw a big group of pilot whales which was magic! Finally, we would highly recommend the Gros Piton hike - the start of the trail is just down the road from the villa. Our guide was really friendly and told us all about what we could see from the different view points.

We have had such a great stay here and would fully recommend Pitons Stargroves for anyone looking to get away from it all.

“Paradise on Gros Piton”

The House of the Stars is unforgettable. My husband and I just returned to snowy New York after a 9-day stay at this incredible villa. I miss it already. This property lives up to the high expectations you have after viewing its photos. It's a one-of-a-kind place that affords unparalleled views. Each morning we woke up to rainbows over Petit Piton and the Caribbean; each evening we fell asleep after stargazing for hours in the tower. We just couldn't stop saying, "wow." This is the perfect place to stay if you're not a "resort person."

Getting to the house is a bit of a drive from the main road, but it is straightforward and easy to remember once you make the drive once. If you're a confident driver and have a 4WD vehicle, you CAN drive directly to the house from the airport. We encountered resistance from Oasis Marigot when we asked for directions to the house; they stated it would be too challenging and had us meet a taxi driver in Soufriere and follow him to the house. This was the only issue we ran into with Oasis Marigot; otherwise, no problems.

The house is a bit of a drive from Soufriere (about 15-20 min). We made several runs to the grocery store, butcher, and bakery in town, in order to stock up. The house is 5 minutes' drive from Sugar Beach resort which is very convenient. All beaches are open to the public in St. Lucia - just drive down to the beach and park outside the gate to the resort. A greeting and a friendly smile got me a ride to and from the beach in the resort shuttle a number of times. Tip: the drinks at Sugar Beach are ridiculously overpriced. We packed our own after the first day, and were quite happy about it. Second tip: Sugar Beach gets overrun with cruise ship daytrippers out on snorkeling "excursions." Go early in the AM or later in the afternoon to avoid the rush, as the marine park area is not that large. Third tip: treat yourself to a spa treatment at Sugar Beach - it's worth it!

This property is best suited for able-bodied people and older kids. There are lots of stairs and the house has an open fourth wall (incredible!!), so if I had little kids, I'd be terrified that they'd fall. The master suite is beautiful. I preferred showering in the larger bathroom adjacent to the smaller bedroom; this bathroom features an enormous shower that's built directly into the mountain (very cool). The kitchen has all the basics you need, and there's a nice sound system in the house. I recommend the owner set up an iPod dock so that guests can play music from their phones rather than relying on the CDs in the house. The light switches are what I'd call eccentric - pay attention when you're shown where they are! The pool is gorgeous but freezing - I only got in once. Use the mosquito netting provided when you sleep; you'll need it. The lizards and frogs that hop through the house take care of a lot of the bugs. We had a bird friend come visit us each morning for breakfast.

Mary and Pius, who take care of the property and guests, are warm, wonderful people who made us feel safe and at home. Pius stays at the house when guests go out, which made us feel our stuff was safe (especially given how accessible the house is). We got his cell phone # and simply texted him when we were heading out, which was convenient. Mary made us a fantastic dinner one evening, and also made us delicious soursop juice from fruit we bought at Sugar Beach.

Soufriere tips: Eroline Foods has all the basics you'll need. Go to the butcher next to the supermarket for meat. Purity Bakery across the street has delicious coconut cake. Find Miss Teresa's bakery for the most delicious bread you'll ever taste. Petit Peak has awesome fish rotis but the wait for food tests the most patient of people. Check out the market on Saturday AMs for fruit, veggies, and fish. Drive in to Choiseul for fresh fish. Go to Martha's Table for the best lunch around. Have dinner at Orlando's and make sure you meet him while you're there.

All in all - a fantastic place to stay and highly recommended. I hope we return someday!

“Beautiful Stay and Vacation”

The service from Mary and Pius was excellent. They really made us feel at home and fixed any issues that we had. The property was beautiful and well-kept. The design and wood-workings are absolutely amazing!! You really feel one with nature here.

The view of the Pitons never got old and every morning we awoke to birds singing and the sound of the wind. And every night we would look at the stars from the watchtower. In bed, the mosquito netting became romantic, and we (my husband and I) slept with the sounds of crickets, frogs and the wind blowing through the trees to keep us company.

The location is perfect, as it is located on a hill and the wind keeps you quite comfortable without AC. I preferred it actually. You are on a hill so driving is an asset. We did not drive and made the trek down to Sugar Beach (20-25min walk downhill)...it's a good work out. We did attempt to walk back up, but not suggested unless you are active individuals!!! You can always call Pius and he picks you up with a car for a small fee.

Around the area we suggest going to Sugar Beach (bring your own blanket as chair rentals are expensive), Sulphur Springs (Skip the tour, but do the bath), check out Soufriere, and every Friday evening in Anse La Raye has an event called the Fish Fry.

For lunch/dinner, check out Boucan Restaurant, Dasheen Restaurant at Ladera (If going to dinner, please call and make reservations in advance) and Petit Peaks in Soufriere for St. Lucia cuisine.

The best part was the view. Even with the design of 3 walls we never got wet and it rained almost every day. If you can get used to some flying bugs, lizards and beetles, then your set. Remember to use minimal lighting especially at night to decrease the bugs.

We recommend this location for families (not with small toddlers due to the pool and watchtower) and for couples or groups of friends. Perfect if you want to be away from all the distractions of city life but still close enough to restaurants and other amenities (if you drive).

Overall, great experience and wouldn't change a thing about our honeymoon at the Piton Stargrove.

“Our new home away from home in St. Lucia”

Wow. Pitons Stargroves is an amazing place -- unlike any other home I have ever stayed in or seen. Built into the side of Gros Piton, it has a breathtaking view of Petit Piton. In fact, I'd rank it as one of best views in the entire Caribbean. The hand-crafted, two-storey home is completely open to the northwest and still provides shelter from rain and sun. The home's architect also built Ladera, the well-known and expensive resort similarly located between the Pitons.

We arrived hot and tired, but Mary, the housekeeper, and Pius, the caretaker , welcomed us and made us feel comfortable instantly. You'll never meet two nicer, more accommodating people. While the airy home is so open that you might feel insecure about leaving your valuables at the house, there are no worries with Mary and Pius around. Anytime we left the house, Pius magically appeared to see us off and to give some tips on our plans. And he was always there to welcome us back when we returned.

And lastly, the house is located in the middle of the fun things to do in St. Lucia. Anse des Pitons, Sugar Beach, and some of the best snorkeling in the Windward Isles is just a steep walk/drive down the hill. We did not hike the challenging Gros Piton trail, which is only a fifteen-minute walk from the house. But we did hike the fabulous Tet Paul Nature Trail, which was a fifteen-minute drive away. At one point, the trail looks out over the Gros Piton with Pitons Stargroves directly below us! We yelled for Pius, but we were too far away for him to hear, especially with the constant breeze rushing between the mountains.

That same day, we also toured Sulphur Springs at the Drive-In Volcano and took mud baths, which were very fun. We dined at Petit Peak Restaurant in the charming little town of Soufriere and bought some provisions there as well. Unfortunately, we did not have time to visit the nearby Anse Chastenet and its great beach, snorkeling, and resort, Morne Coubaril Plantation/Zipline, and Diamond Falls and Botanical Gardens. Too much for a three-day stay, that's for sure! So I guess we'll have to go back! Yay!

If you are lucky enough to get a reservation at Pitons Stargroves, take it. It's great.
