“Mixed feelings – bad aftertaste!”
Reviewed 21 February 2007 for a stay in February 2007

About us – two families renting two units and one car from Casa Ladera.

First impression – “rough”, slightly unfriendly woman picking us up from the airport with our rental car (circa 1995; wanna save 20 $? go for it! Otherwise I suggest renting a new one from a real company) and wanting to drop off only one family. (I guess the tension started when I asked to give a ride to two families)
Second impression – beautiful three-unit hotel in the middle of the rough village with most of the needed amenities. We reached the ocean in 5 minutes an saw beautiful cliffs and picturesque rough waves. (FYI I do not suggest swimming)
Next impression! – If you come at the end of the week be prepared for scarce food supply (nothing to do with hotel, but worth mentioning; food comes on Tuesdays)
Then goes the beautiful island with deserted beaches and wild nature! GREAT BBQ place in the evening (back to the hotel).
Mixed feelings begin with a family moving out of the third unit and the new family (with teenagers) moving in. Next day we discover bottles of ketchup and relish floating in the pool (until the end of the vacation - nobody cleans it!). Then we have a “pleasant” conversation with Lauren telling us that we have to rent another car! (We do not, big mistake) … Vacation has passed 1.5 month ago... Where is our deposit? Hmmm, the “fun” begins! (We should have rented the other car! LOL) First news is that Jen had to charge us 100$ for the “extra cleaning” - amazing excuse!!! I spend 80$ to clean my 4 bedroom home and apparently in Puerto Rico it costs 50$ extra to clean a two bedroom apartment! I make a fuss and then there is a revelation – we are “forgiven” for the dented car door (remind you the old bitten off steering wheel of a Jeep Cherokee circa 1995) and smoke burns in the sink! (That really pissed me off, considering we had 2 kids in each unit and we WOULD NOT smoke inside!!!). Bottom line - be careful of your co-vacationers and unexpected charges!!!!

Casa Ladera is not a hotel; it is a vacation rental home with three 2-BR units, which can be rented by one or more groups at a time. We don't offer daily maid service, but rather we have a cleaning service that comes in after every departure. When a huge mess is left behind, as happened in this case, our cleaning service charges us double, which we then deduct from the security deposit (which was sent to this group a few weeks ago). This has only happened about three times out of hundreds of groups who've stayed with us over the years, in extreme cases.

As for our suggestion that this group rent a second car, the reason was that they had 8 people in their group, including children, who were squeezing every day into a rental car that fits a maximum of 5 people. This is not only highly unsafe, but illegal, which was why we asked them to rent a second car, but they refused.

We'd encourage you to please read the other reviews of Casa Ladera on this site for a true indication of our amenities and quality of accommodations. We don't have a staff on-site but we, the owners, live on the island and are minutes away if we're needed. If we'd been told of any issues this group was having while at Casa Ladera, we would have addressed them immediately, but we didn't hear one complaint while they were here.

“Casa Ladera was great!”

Thank you for a great vacation! Casa Ladera was perfect for our family. I can't imagine a better location on Vieques. The accommodations were spacious and welcoming, the pool was huge and well maintained. And for a traveling family, the washer and dryer made a big difference in cleanliness and comfort level.

Lauren is so helpful with recommendations and her knowledge of the island. And Jen's website is inviting, welcoming and accurate.

We enjoyed many of the beautiful beaches on the island: Navio Beach, our favorite for body surfing; Media Luna and Sun Bay for calmer waters, and Bio-Bay for a fantastic evening expedition! The beach just steps from Casa Ladera is sprinkled with sea glass, and is a nice location to watch the sun set. All of the other beaches are an easy drive from Casa Ladera.

Rent your vehicle through Casa Ladera; you'll be glad you did. (You'll need a four-wheel drive.)

Lauren and Jen run a great operation. We highly recommend Casa Ladera.

“A dream week at Casa Ladera!”

My husband and I recently returned from Vieques, and were thrilled with
our stay at Casa Ladera. It truly was everything the web site and photos
made it out to be, and much more. As these other reviews have mentioned,
the owners were extra helpful and accommodating, and made our stay all
that much more relaxing. We stayed in the downstairs unit, which has a
comfy king-size bed, a big kitchen with all the amenities of home, and a
massive poolside terrace with ocean views right off the living room. The
pool is huge and wonderful for cooling off after a long hot day at the
beach, and we enjoyed grilling and eating out on our poolside terrace
almost nightly.

The house is located in a really convenient spot on the island, right down
the road from the main supermarket and just a few minutes by car to the
two towns, the airport and the beaches. Of course it was also great to be
able to walk to the small beach right near the house, which has beautiful
views of the sunset and the other islands. All the extras provided, like
wireless internet, satellite TV, welcome basket, DVDs & videos and more,
just added to the charm of this lovely spot.

We didn't have any problems with theft either at the house or on the
beaches. The island felt safe, was very friendly, and is just a beautiful
place to come to relax and explore. We will be back to Casa Ladera next
year!

“Another Great Stay!”

Casa Ladera continues to be an excellent Vieques location for families and small groups. Can't beat the beautiful pool, outdoor grill and fridge, and high-speed wireless internet. Okay, it is vacation, but it is nice to be able to check your e-mail. Jen and Lauren manage the property very well and provide great hospitality - assisting with car rentals, airport/ferry pick-up, welcome basket, etc. We have also found it to be a comfortable, fun, and safe place to stay with preschool and school-age children.

“Fabulous Casa-Ladera”

Casa-Ladera is everthing you'd want and more. Incredibly clean, well appointed and spacious with every amenity you'd get in a luxury hotel but greater convenience and all the comforts of home (including washer/dryer,wireless internet,DVD,satellite TV,movies) The owners, Jen and Lauren, are on site, helpful and attentive and welcome you to enjoy their lovely property without ever being intrusive. You feel like their casa is your casa. Jen answers e-mail or the phone with lightspeed and picked us up at the airport and oriented us to the property and island. Lauren had an airconditioer(still funtioning well but dripping some condensation) replaced in record time-faster than we could have at home.
The location is convenient to all you need and a minute walk to a beach but the pool is hard to leave.
My wife and I were delighted we found Casa-Ladera on their wonderful website and ethusiastically recomend it to anyone who wants a home rental on Vieques.
