Visited yesterday with my husband. Fantastic course in excellent condition. Thoroughly good test of golf. Staff very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Will be returning asap.

We came here on a deal and got the best surprise you can imagine. The hotel was created by royalty for royalty, and the nobility, as a spa hotel and it lives up to its sumptuous reputation. It's simply gorgeous and palatial. The grounds are lovely with a small lake and gardens.
The spa and facilities are fantastic with a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, and both indoor & outdoor pools.
However the star of the hotel has to be the food. The current chef holds 3 Michelin stars and the food is truly outstanding.
The staff are brilliant and very pleasant, always willing to help you.
The golf course is a very high standard, it's immaculate and demanding, I recommend taking at least 1.5 litres of water with you. We had a nice surprise whilst playing golf when a young man from the hotel sped out to meet us half way round with ice cold water and a cold flannel.
Finally it's expensive to eat and drink here so some guests go out for pre-dinner drinks at the local bar across the road.
Vidago is remote and there's not a lot to do in the small town but it's well placed to visit the main feature of Northern Portugal, the Douro ValleyValle, which is a UNESCO world heritage site of outstanding beauty and the home of Port.

We had an amazing time at Vidago Place: the Hotel is magnificent, the rooms beautiful and cozy, the employees extremely kind and helpful, the food is great and the SPA is great! The surroundings are beautiful and you can make visits to the neighborhood. We had all a blast!

Especially great if you are looking for a retreat, the hotel's accommodations are great, the SPA is fairly good, but best in the summer (Outdoor pool area and outdoor jacuzzi), and the surrounding green are is huge and offers great walks. Vidago's town in particular has nothing to offer, reason which this hotel is most suited for those looking for a retreat away from all the daily stress.

Tucked away in the park grounds of the Vidago Palace is this recent re-design of an original pre-WWII Mackenzie Ross layout. Seemingly unspectacular from the 1st tee, a mounting challenge gradually unfolds as one progresses from hole to hole. Well-guarded greens and hazards precisely designed into casually-optimal landing areas provide for continual rude surprises. Delicately sloped greens, particularly around the holes, demand precise shot-making -- most notably on the accessible Par 3's. A genuine pleasure to play, the course adds an additional challenge beginning on the Back 9 where it ascends upward, dramatically, every second or third hole. So, fatigue and slope begin to factor into club and shot selection. The 17th and 18th provide for an exciting finish, something akin to the final descent on a wild roller coaster, with genuine eagle and birdie opportunities, respectively, on the long Par 5 and Long Par 3. Players who are less than fit will struggle mightily to walk the Back 9 and short-hitters may find themselves over-challenged, so choosing the correct tee is imperative.
