We arrived at Raetihi Lodge on 23 November having travelled from Wellington in the North Island to Picton in the South Island. After a rushed exchange from the Interislander Ferry via Car Hire pickup to Cougarline Watertaxi terminal, we were looking for a stress free environment. That is exactly what we got.
We were dropped off by Cougarline at a jetty seemingly in the middle of nowhere which transpired to be an accurate assessment. We were picked up by Nelson in a vehicle, driven a mile or so where we joined him in the Raitihi Lodge boat and sped across the inlet for about twenty minutes before another jetty came into view. This was Raitihi Lodge where we were welcomed in a most engaging manner by the staff, shown to a marvellous room and were told about the Lodge, then promptly sat out on the veranda at the front of the premises to have a late lunch (excellent) and to look over the bay at the stunning vista.
There being nowhere else to eat, we had dinner in the restaurant, which was not overpriced, which we thoroughly enjoyed on consecutive nights looking over the bay.
We borrowed mountain bikes to explore one side of the inlet and took several walks in the other direction, one in the near darkness to see the glow worms the staff had told us about.
But the real treat was throughout the stay the views from the Lodge. If you like sea and green scenery then this is the place to stay for a few nights or longer if you want to totally switch off.

Hands down the best place we have stayed at in the Queen Charlotte area! Its actually in the Kenepuru Sounds, a very short ferry ride from Portage. I can't heap enough praise on the Hotel,- its wonderful warm staff and it's incredibly talented Chef. I think it's an absolute hidden Gem! We stayed at a few high end places on this trip including Bay of Many Coves and I would emphatically say that I prefer Raetihi. Of course BOMC is wonderful - it's the only 5 star lodge in the area and at $900 + p/night you would expect it to be good. But Raetihi is very affordable and goes the extra distance. Their own ferry will collect you in Portage and from the first moment you meet their staff you feel welcomed. All the staff are excellent and make you feel special. The massages were very good. The rooms quiet and very comfortable. The hotel has been recently re-developed and is very stylishly and tastefully decorated. The highest praise is for Dylan, the Chef, who has consistently produced exquisite meals. The green lipped mussells from a near by mussell farm were so good that we ordered them 2 nights in a row! The beef was cooked perfectly as were all the dishes! Each dish was not only delicious but also so beautifully and artfully presented. What a talent! Thank you Raetihi for a most wonderful and restful stay!

“Where should I start? Perhaps with the dawn, which burst into the skies above Marlborough Sounds and crept like an orange treacle across the waters. Before that there was the best bed I have ever slept in. And before that there was the chocolate mousse and the New Zealand lamb. And before that there was the bike ride and the massage. And there was listening to the waves on the stones of the beach and watching the water shift through a dozen Pantone colours. Raetihi is a sophisticated haven in the remoteness. Even the person fine-tuning the coffee seemed to know what he was doing.”

Room tip: All of the rooms have good views but some better than others, you could request a water view.

We had asked our otherwise excellent travel company (Trailfinders) for 2-night accommodation in Marlborough as part of a 5 week tour because we wanted to visit famous wineries, and perhaps due to poor communication on both sides, ended up with accommodation here. Sometimes, when booking accommodation in 20 unfamiliar places, an inappropriate choice can slip through the net.
When we arrived after a 45 minute water taxi, vehicle, water taxi trip our fears that this place might not be right for us, were confirmed. There did not seem to be a lot to do (or at least not things we wanted to do) and a trip round the wineries would not be practical from here.
On arrival we arranged to be switched at our own cost to the Harbour View Motel in Picton which was fine for our needs, and also arranged for transport back to Picton.
Our decision does not reflect adversely at all on the Raetihi Lodge where the people we met were courteous and helpful, the accommodation very clean and attractive and the setting beautiful and tranquil. It would have been nice had they offered to refund the cost of our breakfasts but not a big deal that they didn't. So a costly mistake on our part but not a disaster.

I would not have bothered posting any comments, except out of idle interest, have just tried to find Raetihi Lodge on Trip Advisor. I could not find it under Marlborough Sounds but could find it under Marlborough! I am not sure whether this is Trip Advisor's fault or the Lodge's fault but until this is rectified the Lodge may be missing out on people who want a place in Marlborough Sounds and may pick up one or two bookings from people like us who really want to stay in the wine region.

As you outline, Marlborough is a vast area, that includes the the rural farming & wine region, the Sounds and all towns like Blenheim & Picton that support all these services. Trip Advisor recogises the whole Marlborough region as one beautiful area, and although remote, we are proud to be a part of the area. We hope you enjoyed your time in New Zealand - it's a beautiful part of the world.

My wife and I had five excellent days at Raetihi. The surroundings are superb, from looking down into the crystal clear waters of Kenepuru Sound from the lodges own jetty to gazing up at the small ranges which separate each of the Sounds.

We took the soft option to do some of the Queen Charlotte Track, with the friendly staff from the lodge organising a light lunch for our day pack then transporting us to a handy start on the trail. After 3 to 5 hours they would be at the pre arranged pick up point to boat us back to the Lodge for a hot shower and a well earned meal at the first class restaurant.

The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and all love the area, so act as wonderful ambassadors for the Marlborough Region. Attractions abound, from deep sea fishing to a quiet afternoon in the wineries, perhaps topping of a favourite white with some of the famous green lip mussels which are farmed at the Lodges doorstep.

We were there in the first week in November and the weather was surprisingly comfortable. We had expected and prepared for walking in the rain, but didn't get the wet weather gear out once.

All in all it was a delightful holiday and one we hope to repeat soon.
