Generally speaking Vistazul is a mini paradise. We love it and have stayed four times over three years. Just a few tips though. Make sure when renting you ask if the unit has a back door screen... this is crucial...there is always a lovely breeze, but if you have no screen you have to keep your back door shut due to bugs. This makes the place very hot and hence the need to turn on the A/C which is ridiculous. Why use A/C when you have God's natural breezes to cool you. So just check your unit. Also when we started staying there the use of the pool at Palmazul was included in all rentals..it was listed on the hotel's website....now we see that rentals are charging either $12 or 7 per day depending on your length of stay. Kind of chintzy we think, but not being ocean swimmers, the pool is crucial to our enjoyment and now we have to pay for it...something to consider. Also be very aware that San Clemente is a third world fishing village...ranshackle houses abound, with public showers on the main streets...life is extremely hard for the locals but they are without a doubt the loveliest people you would ever want to meet...extremely welcoming.. a wonderful, different vacation to be had...if you are really fussy about dirt etc...San Clemente might not be for you.
This is a lovely place, well landscaped. We stayed in unit 103 at the front of the complex. The units are spacious, well maintained and the staff very friendly. The residents we met all spoke English and were from Canada or U.S. - this was a very friendly close community that welcomed all new comers giving you recommendations on where to eat & shop. Local merchants would come by & sell you bottled water and bring in fresh fruit & vegetables. You had to go a big city to purchase North American style groceries - it was $1.00 by bus and then $20.00 by taxi back to go to Portovejo.
Unfortunately, the beach was across the street. It was as if it was your own private space, you could literally walk the beach for 30 minutes without seeing another sole. There were beautiful sunsets at night. The only draw back was the tide, sometimes you could walk the beach for miles, but during high tide you were limited to a few hundred feet and had to walk on the street.
