Summary: Kuppelrain is a first class fine dinning option in South Tyrol and Meran area. Food, wine, service and atmosphere are perfect match, warm, friendly and high class. The cost "90 EUR five set menu, 120 EUR with matching wine" offers excellent price performance.
From my point the best food we had in Meran and around for last year's.
Location:
Kuppelrain is located in Castelbello a nice small village between Meran and Schlanders , a 45 Min car ride from Meran.
Food:
5, 6 or 7 course menus, a la carte possible. Nice pre-starters "greetings from the kitchen" like a local "Gin Tonic" with cucumber sorbet and local Gin.
Excellent, regional indigrients prepared on international standards. Whatever we had like the goose liver arrangements, the local lamb, the pigeon breast was simply delicious, even the desert "Heumlich" was exellent up to the last bite. But bring time and hunger, a 5 course menu.
The drinks:
The wife of the owner and head of kitchen recommends suitable wines by the glass for each dish. She knows the wineries and local wine farmer to suggest the right match. We had a very nice local sparkling, a Gewürztraminer from Elena Walch and a local Lagrein for the Lamb. All excellent.
The service:
Genuine friendly and lovely by the daughter of the owners. Felt like welcomed guests, all wishes were taken and done immediately.
Wrap Up:
A "must go" in Meran area if you like fine dinning.
Tip: take the train from Meran to Castelbello and enjoy the menu with wine. The restaurant is just a few steps away from the small train station.
