“Great Holiday Accommodation”
Reviewed 28 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

La Grange was perfect for a very restful holiday. The house is well equipped and very clean and has a fantastic balcony with views across the countryside which is lovely for an evening bbq and sitting watching the sun go down. The heated private swimming pool is well sized and surrounded by garden on one side and countryside on the other - the perfume of the flowers is an unexpected addition to the morning swim - when a wetsuit came in handy as the September mornings were cooler. The house and grounds have lots of places to sit to enjoy the sun or shade and it is tempting not to want to wander too far. Although the house can accommodate 10 people, as a couple we didn't rattle around - the open plan top floor felt very cosy for the darker evenings. Bill and Helene are welcoming hosts and happy to give advice and tips on places to see. The cottage is well located for visits to Bordeaux, St Emilion, Bergerac, Aubeterre sur Dronne, Libourne to name but a few, and Chalais itself has the castle, coffee bars, restaurants, boulangerie etc and is about a 20 minute walk. We hired bikes and explored the local area - regularly getting lost; it is possible to go into town without cycling back up the hill - in other words, there is a reasonably level route for those people averse to hills.

We had a great holiday, very relaxing and very comfortable and would definitely go back, if there weren't loads more places to explore!

“Beautiful and tranquil”
Reviewed 2 December 2015 for a stay in July 2015

As a family of 6 adults, La Grange had all that we hoped for, beautiful location, quiet, lovely heated pool, and a large balcony to looked across the valley while sipping wine.
La Grange has all that you would require, even down to a little corner with books and games.
We all loved the open plan upstairs, which in turned opened onto the upper large balcony. Kitchen though small, had all that we needed, though it was nice that the men went and played snooker in the barn while the women cooked, which was not too often.
Surrounding area is beautiful, local towns with in easy driving distance. Chalais market is a must, lots of treats to be had, you will find all the usual shops here as well.
For a real treat, it s worth visiting 'La Porier Gaston' in Bardenac, lovely rustic restaurant, be prepared to spend a few hours here, you get to have a 5 course meal with wine for less then €15 a head, if you are a picky eater this is not for you, as there is no real menu, you eat whatever is served, it is great fun not knowing what the next dish will be, we visited twice and enjoyed both occasion's
Whatever type of holiday you are looking for, La Grange is a good starting point, and would happily recommend staying here. The owners are on hand and very helpful though not at all intrusive.

Thanks for your very positive review not only of the property but also the area and restaurants in our little corner of the Charente. The Sunday lunch at "Chez Poirier" is even more impressive and 3 hrs is the minimum time to fully enjoy the gastronomy. Its worth noting that if you dont like something on the menu they will offer an alternative. One of our local favorites as well.

“Quiet country location, excellent facilities”
Reviewed 24 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

This gite ticked all boxes for us, it sleeps 11 and there were only 2 of us so we enjoyed the space. The pool, being heated, was always a pleasant temperature. The main bedrooms remain fairly cool, even on very hot days as they are situated in the lowest part of the property. The town of Chalais is at 2km and has most amenities including a large supermarket. Local countryside is unspoilt, endless sunflower fields and maize fields on quiet country lanes, rolling but not spectacular.
Hosts friendly and fixed the one problem we had very quickly (washing machine fault), and they respected our privacy.

“Fabulous property in beautiful location”
Reviewed 27 June 2015 for a stay in June 2015

My husband and I spent a wonderful week here in June. Fabulous location – very private and overlooking gorgeous woodland, but within few minutes to all the necessary amenities. The gite itself has everything you could ask for. And the heated pool! The owners were so lovely and helpful, but not at all intrusive. We will definitely be back. And will be telling all our friends about this gorgeous holiday let.

“Relaxing villa in beautiful countryside with fantastic pool and terrace for outdor eating.”

We had a lovely time at La Grange and all members of the family enjoyed the stay. Youngsters loved the pool and the access to free WIFI, parents and grandparents loved the time spent on the balcony either eating or just taking in the view (as well as the pool which was heated). The spacious open plan accommodation enabled us to all be together but pursue our different activities and it was a joy to have a dining table big enough for us all to get round for either a meal (on an occasional wet day) or have a game of cards.
We hired a car and visited the local area, Aubeterre, Riberac and St Emilion as well as more local spots such as St Aulaye and Lake Jaunay for swimming and canoeing. There was also opportunity for dining out - a treat in France, not too far away in Aubeterre and the local Chateau. Of course, the market was an occasion in itself.

We would all recommend staying at La Grange.
