The Villa di Piazzano is situated on the Tuscany/Umbria border close to Cortona. It wasn't inexpensive but didn't disappoint. The hotel staff were exceptional. They were very efficient but also helpful and friendly and helped make our stay a wonderful one. The hotel itself is a beautiful villa and outbuildings that have been converted into lovely rooms. The grounds are pretty and the outdoor eating terrace and the swimming pool were just great. We also ate in the restaurant twice and the food was very good. We will certainly return.

A pristine retreat, 15 minutes from the centre of Cortona.

First class accommodation, kind and friendly service.

We stayed here 5 nights and used the villa as a base to visit many the of towns of Tuscany. Full breakfast, gorgeous grounds, terrific pool, and a beautiful room (the new Jr. Suite with garden view is where it's at).

The kind and gracious staff were also a great help in sharing local tips.

Best place to stay in area!! Do yourself a treat and stay here. The food was to die for. Any thing you need they are right there to help you out. We even took a cooking class with the chef! Wish we could have stayed longer and can't wait to go back.

My wife and I recently stayed here for x4 nights as part of honeymoon.

Good points
The staff were excellent and always very helpful.
The food is great
The views, garden and pool are great and very relaxing
Cortona is well worth a visit

Bad points
There aren't really any, if you accept the style of the rooms and the relaxed location and decide they are for you, you will have a great time.

Thanks to everyone at the villa di Piazzano for making our stay memorable

My wife and I visited this Villa in early July for 3 nights, and upon arrival we were very pleased with the setting - a gorgeous Tuscan villa in a quiet country setting, backed by wooded hills and surrounded by Cyprus trees. The grounds were so peaceful, with a great pool and nice gardens, we were very pleased with the place visually, and our room was nice as well, not in the main house but the smaller one across from it. This is where our pleasure ended, unfortunately. We found the staff very much clouded our experience at this hotel - upon arrival we were given very little welcome, had to carry our own suitcases to our room, and we given no overview of things whatsoever. We arrived in the evening, so had dinner at the inn shortly after arrival and our waiter, despite having to glance at the small menu after each order to clarify what was on it, still managed to screw up the order and bring us the wrong main courses. he also seemed to have no knowledge about the wine, which is strange given we were in one of Italy's prime wine areas. it seemed like he had just started and had no training. After visiting some vineyards the next day, and bringing some wine back to the villa, we quickly learned that the Inn doesn't like outside wine being consumed on the property - no bottle opener was provided in the room, and instructions were given that outside wine was only to be consumed in your room - but how without an opener?? Seems very petty to mandate guests to only order wine from their very limited wine by the glass list. The second day we spent the afternoon by the pool, and that day is when 4 large American families checked in - complete with very noisy kids - now I have nothing against Americans or kids, but when several other guests are couples looking for peace and quiet, and the families are screaming, yelling at the top of their lungs (kids and adults), perhaps the hotel should step in and manage the noise levels to ensure all guests are satisfied - or at least say something. Nothing was said or done and we had to vacate the property to find peace. Indeed, two other couples were very dissatisfied as well, one to the extent they checked out a day early to go to another Inn. The final straw that set us against this property was after we left - on our drive to Rome I realized I forgot my favourite bathing suit on the shower, where it was drying. We promptly emailed the front desk and asked them to ship it to one of the other hotels we were staying in - given we were still in Italy for 8 more days. I thought this was a reasonable request, especially given I was willing to pay for the shipping, despite having other hotels in North America cover this type of incidental in the past out of courtesy. Well let me tell you, from the hotels perspective, this was a monumental ask - said it wasn't possible to have something shipped to Rome in 8 days, despite the hotel being a simple 3 hour drive away. After several back and forth emails, they couldn't arrange a simple courier, then the last day before we left Italy (and a full 7 days after we had checked out), they offered to ship it to Toronto for 45 euros!!! Incompetence is what I say - and in order for this property to improve it must upgrade the staff, plain and simple. The aesthetics are there, the location is great, but you need great star to provide a great experience, and it was sorely lacking here.

Dear Guest,

Your review touches on a number of issues and merits attention, particularly in view of offering the readers of this forum further details as to what you have described and omitted. I would like to go beyond the positive description you make of the Villa, the rooms and its location in order to focus directly on the issue of the service you received during your brief stay:

1- We are aware that a family with numerous children impacted on the peace and quiet of this hotel. This is the first time that we have been faced with such a situation which, as you can read from other reviews, caused problems for our guests on a specific day. As a result of this situation we have adopted certain filters on the reservation system, introducing a number of limitations for families travelling with children. Furthermore, children will always be welcome but will be required to respect those common rules of co-existence with other guests and must be under the superivision and control of their parents during their stay. We apologize for the disturbance this created.

2- It is not fair to say that the Management of this hotel did not intervene. Perhaps the results were not as immediate as you would have liked, but the situation was brought under control and the children were organized in such a way as to avoid further disturbance.

3- From your description it would appear that your order at the restaurant was not handled in an appropriate manner by the waiter. I do not have any evidence to be able to accurately analyse the specific incident. What I can say is that our Maitre-Sommelier is very professional and has a vast knowldege of wines both from our specific area and the rest of Italy. As a result of your comment, we will verify whether this may have been an isolated event and make the necessary corrections to avoid any similar situations.

4- External wines: with the premise that we offer a very extensive wine list with over 100 different labels, and that we ask guests not to bring food and drinks to the areas reserved to our internal restaurant and bar service, we are more than happy to provide room service with a corkage fee which also includes glasses and a decanter, should this be necessary. This is common practice at an international level and not specific to Villa di Piazzano. I am therefore surprised that you may have been irritated by this practice.

5- Courier: to refer to a member of staff as "incompetent" for an external service provided by the couriers in our rural location is unjust for someone who is carrying out their job and not their fault in any way. We supplied your wife with a copy of all the correspondence which took place when we endevoured to send you your misplaced bathing suit, within an extremely limited deadline for Europe. Couriers do not serve our countryside area on a daily basis and don't operate on weekends so the timing was not sufficient to carry out the service. We are not in a metropolitan location so travellers need to take into consideration the peculiarities of the area in which we operate.

I really feel that during the course of your stay and subsequently in this review the respect required was grossly lacking, culminating in words which aimed at offending the staff member dealing with the courier. I believe that the readers of this forum are attentive in evaluating what you have described and in discerning those problems which cannot be attributed to our staff and which result in unwarranted personal evaluations.
