Its a while since I stayed here with friends. We had difficulty finding the place as we had lost the guide book with the contact details. When we did arrive, just in time for dinner, we were given a great welcome, a well needed drink and some time to clean up before dinner. We had a wonderful meal and shared the experience with some bird watchers who were also staying. The next morning we were really able to appreciate the location of this splendid location. It really is spectacular. We had a wonderful weekend, the memories of which are a joy. I still get a Christmas card from Casa Guilla.

As someone who enjoys travel, one of the pleasures is staying in accomodation that is just that bit different from the norm. I recently left a review of Jurys on Broad Street in Birmingham and thinking about our stay at Casa Guilla, I really dont think you could find two venues that are more polar opposites!!

We stayed here for three nights. We had two rooms - my wife and I had the "suite" which consisted of three rooms and my daughters stayed in a second room both en-suites. I believe there are only three bedrooms in total. It would be easy to be critical of the rooms - they are basic and lack many of the luxuries one comes to expect from modern hotels. We all heard various "rustlings" in the roof spaces during the night and "aircon" consists of a simple fan, But..... despite all that we really loved this place.

The property is an ancient farm house aged (I think Richard said) almost 1000 years old in places and a real maze. The rooms are very clean and the ambience is really laid back. The "village" (no facilities) is 10km away from the nearest main road down a narrow and winding track and on arrival the property is perched literally on the top of a precipice with an interesting drive up the last few meters.

Why did we love it? Others have commented on the peace and quiet and it really is amazingly restful. Richard and Sandra are certainly not "in your face" hosts but are happy to chat and advise on activities (we did the gorge walk which was fantastic). But most of all we loved two aspects: Sandra's cooking really is first class. Guests eat together and we had the company of a really nice couple from Dorset. The food was superb - three courses with coffee served on the balcony. The second aspect is the pool. How on earth Richard managed to build such a fantastic little pool in such a location is amazing. We spent most afternoons on the pool terrace looking at the stunning views, watching the birds of prey and sipping a glass of chilled white from the bar (all done on honesty basis). There cant be many more relaxing places to spend a sunny afternoon.

Any attempt to bring Casa Guilla into the modern world in terms of room decor/facilities would actually detract from what is a really unique offering. Take it as it is and enjoy. We would love to return one day.

What a great way to start our holiday in Spain. We were met by Richard, who basically said here's the bar, help yourself, write it on that pad of paper and we knew this was going to be our kind of place. Stunning location, lovely room, amazing food both in quality and quantity - we could not eat all we were offered.
We stayed for two nights, first night the other couples staying were excellent company, we shared a few tales and drinks and a wonderful evening. On day two we had the place to ourselves but Richard and Sandra made sure we had company as they joined us for coffee.
Don't come to this accommodation expecting a chic boutique place, it is clean, quirky, welcoming and in the most amazing place. It is not 'swanky'. We loved it and would not have missed it for the world.

We stayed a whole week in this lodging, and found the quiet atmosphere very relaxing. After climbing 10 km to reach this lodging on a 1000m high cliff, we were welcomed and shown our "apartment " with 3 rooms. As other commenters noted, this is the place to be if you want to let the daily stress behind you. The only thing you hear is silence. There was no TV in the rooms, but wifi is available in many corners. The pool is small but deep, the view is magnificent, and birds of prey are circulating above you. The dinner is enjoyed with the other guests, and during our stay we met a woman from Scotland, a family from England, and British expats living in France. Maybe the British descent of the owners is more attracting to English speaking guests, which we found a pre (being Dutch). Richard and Sandra have a number of detailed excursions, like a 22 km hiking trip in the mountains, which is doable even for non-mountaineers. The food is served in large portions, varied, and well-prepared. The house wine and coffee with brandy or liqueur are complimentary.

An advertising campaign for beer from Nova Scotia, Canada had as a slogan "Those who like it like it a lot". I can't think of a better assessment of Casa Guilla. This is not a place for everyone. It is a 12 km drive, along a narrow road, from the nearest town - Tremp. There is nothing else here, and I mean nothing else.

Casa Guilla is, as others have said, a unique place, perched on a rock outcropping above the village of Santa Engracia - really only a collection of a few stone homes. The views from the terrace are absolutely spectacular - eagles soaring above, sheep in the field below, mountains in the distance - words simply cannot describe the view.

The 'masia' is an interesting maze of rooms and narrow stairways, twisting and turning, up and down. You need to be mobile and prepared to duck at times. Although we've assessed the room as poor due to the low ceilings and it's rustic nature - it certainly was not fancy, it had all the amenities one would want, including a small fridge and good internet access. And other then to sleep we were never really in the room anyway, either enjoying the terrace or a meal.

The nearest alternative for food is Tremp but given Sandra's cooking talents we don't know why anyone would not eat here. Dining is family style - all guests, apparently limited to eight given only three rooms, eat together. During our stay we enjoyed the company of an English mother and daughter. The meal was superb. My wife, a vegetarian, was well taken care of while I certainly enjoyed the lamb. A four course home-cooked meal with seconds if you wished (and it was so good we all took our share of seconds) was accompanied by wine and after dinner liqueurs. Breakfast was equally filling and excellent, all the food being very fresh. The uniqueness of the Casa in combination with the excellent meals make a stay here excellent value.

Although the bed may not be the best in the world it was comfortable. With the fresh air and silence we enjoyed a wonderful sleep.

Casa Guilla is not for everyone. If you are looking for a modern hotel/resort this is certainly not it. But if you enjoy a bit of rustic, in a family type environment, with great hosts and the opportunity to spend some quiet time on the terrace, soaking in the sun, high above the surrounding plains, with eagles, vultures and falcons soaring overhead Casa Guilla is your place.

Note that payment is with cash or cheque only - no credit cards.

We not only liked Casa Guilla, we liked it a lot!
