An advertising campaign for beer from Nova Scotia, Canada had as a slogan "Those who like it like it a lot". I can't think of a better assessment of Casa Guilla. This is not a place for everyone. It is a 12 km drive, along a narrow road, from the nearest town - Tremp. There is nothing else here, and I mean nothing else.

Casa Guilla is, as others have said, a unique place, perched on a rock outcropping above the village of Santa Engracia - really only a collection of a few stone homes. The views from the terrace are absolutely spectacular - eagles soaring above, sheep in the field below, mountains in the distance - words simply cannot describe the view.

The 'masia' is an interesting maze of rooms and narrow stairways, twisting and turning, up and down. You need to be mobile and prepared to duck at times. Although we've assessed the room as poor due to the low ceilings and it's rustic nature - it certainly was not fancy, it had all the amenities one would want, including a small fridge and good internet access. And other then to sleep we were never really in the room anyway, either enjoying the terrace or a meal.

The nearest alternative for food is Tremp but given Sandra's cooking talents we don't know why anyone would not eat here. Dining is family style - all guests, apparently limited to eight given only three rooms, eat together. During our stay we enjoyed the company of an English mother and daughter. The meal was superb. My wife, a vegetarian, was well taken care of while I certainly enjoyed the lamb. A four course home-cooked meal with seconds if you wished (and it was so good we all took our share of seconds) was accompanied by wine and after dinner liqueurs. Breakfast was equally filling and excellent, all the food being very fresh. The uniqueness of the Casa in combination with the excellent meals make a stay here excellent value.

Although the bed may not be the best in the world it was comfortable. With the fresh air and silence we enjoyed a wonderful sleep.

Casa Guilla is not for everyone. If you are looking for a modern hotel/resort this is certainly not it. But if you enjoy a bit of rustic, in a family type environment, with great hosts and the opportunity to spend some quiet time on the terrace, soaking in the sun, high above the surrounding plains, with eagles, vultures and falcons soaring overhead Casa Guilla is your place.

Note that payment is with cash or cheque only - no credit cards.

We not only liked Casa Guilla, we liked it a lot!

Nestled on top of a cliff and 10kms up a winding sealed track sits Casa Guilla. The views from this property are truly 270 degrees and in the most commanding position around Tremp. Soaring vultures and swifts can be seen whilst enjoying a beer sitting on the terrace or whilst having a swim.

There are only 3 guest rooms. The house has been restored from a ruin and is old and rustic in truly the catalan way. The house is difficult to get around in with narrow stairwells and low ceilings. But the views, the food and the location make a stay of a couple of nights well worth while. The rooms were very clean.

Staying in the house each night you are treated to some fabulous cooking and wine - all included in your stay. You dine together which allows you to meet the other guests and talk. We had two lovely nights with 2 other couples that were travelling together. The food served was outstanding, home cooked and made with great skill. We were served a four course meal of soup, risotto, chicken tagine and homemade icecream was truly outstanding.

If you are sick of hotels, the same sanitized disappointing food and paying over the top prices for disappointing meals, then this is the surpise you're looking for. Meet the real people living in Catalunya, eat home cooked food, appreciate their care and skill in providing something out of the ordinary.

Casa Guilla is in a very special place indeed, it's an ancient old farmhouse perched at the very top of a rocky outcrop and the views and locations and truly spectacular, with birds flying overhead constantly. The dinners were also fantastic, really wonderful home cooked food, and lots of it! But... I felt that for the price, the bedrooms, bathrooms and decor were a bit of a let down, it needs some updating to compete with other places on a par to this, as the room was quite cold, dark and damp and the mattress wasn't great either.

We stayed at Casa Guilla on the first night of our trip to Northern Spain. It was a very leisurely 4 hours from the airport in Barcelona - probably could have done it in just over 3 if we weren't jet-lagged and in no hurry. When we arrived, thrilled at the spectacular location and views, we were hungry and tired. Sondra quickly provided a sandwich, and there was a lovely bottle of white in the fridge in our room (only 8 euros!), so we relaxed with food and wine and a wee nap. Dinner (included in the room price) was multi-coursed, wonderfully paced, quite delicious, and included an impressive array of home-made ice creams for dessert, endless wine and after-dinner brandies. Other guests were all English-speaking and interesting - we stayed up until almost 1am talking and enjoying our evening. Casa Guilla was utterly silent for sleeping, and our room and bathroom were clean and comfortable and quite spacious. Breakfast was ample and varied and everything was of the freshest and highest quality. We were utterly delighted with our stay in this farmhouse from the 1500s. Hosts were helpful and friendly, their beautiful German Shepherd gave us a nice dog-fix (it's always hard to be away from one's pet), and what we later realized was probably the best amenity of all - they sent us on our way with a fabulous packed lunch so we could make the next, lengthy leg of our journey without stopping to find sustenance. Lunch in Spain is very tricky, and this English couple understand that. Many thanks to Richard and Sondra for their kindness and hospitality. I would stay there again in a heartbeat. It was a perfect first night of our vacation.

Richard is a wonderful host, and made us feel comfortable and at home immediately. Sondra is a phenomenal cook, her meals were some of the best we had in Spain. The views from the terrace are amazing. Our "double room" included a second, spare bedroom plus a sitting room with wi-fi access, a refrigerator, and coffee and tea makings. It was really a whole apartment. The whole place is quiet and peaceful. We would have loved to have stayed much longer and next time we will.
