Lovely but not worth it.

Pros: Resort is beautiful. Accommodations were as advertised. Main pool is fantastic. Fitness center is top notch.

Cons: You are basically trapped once you enter the resort - incredibly time consuming, expensive (taxi cost) and annoying to try and get off the resort for any reason.
Everything is extremely expensive.
Food/Drinks were mediocre.
Beach was abysmal
Getting around the resort can be very taxing for small children or older individuals - shuttle service is timely but the drop off locations dont really get you where you want to go and the whole layout is terribly confusing.

We traveled to the Grand Mayan Palace Resort this past week. What a Beautiful resort! Stunning! I LOVE the smell of the entry into the lobby of the resort. Such an exotic perfume smell that reminded me of beautiful Pismo Beach. Our 2 bedroom 2 bath suite was perfect for my family. There is a small grocery store also available for buying water jugs but otherwise we mostly ate at the many restaurants in the resort since buying groceries at the small market is more expensive. The prices are the cost of a dinner in the US in California, about $25-35 per person. There is AC in the units which was muchly needed since we arrived the hottest 2 weeks of the year, with humidity bringing the temp close to 107 degrees for the first couple days--the pools are salt water and they were warm and hot. So, we moved to different pools that were cooler. For example, the infinity pool, less people and cooler temp inside the water. You will love seeing the numerous iguanas every morning laying out on the wooden walk ways. What an adventurous SURPRISE and soo much fun to see them because you don't see large iguanas walking around in regular life on your walk to your house mailbox.

Dear Guest,
It sounds like you had an amazing time at the Grand Mayan Palace Resort! The resort's beauty and amenities, including the saltwater pools and multiple dining options, made for a memorable stay. Dealing with the heat by moving to cooler pools like the infinity pool was a smart move. And encountering iguanas on the walkways must have been a delightful surprise!

If there's anything else you'd like to share about your experience or if you have any questions, feel free to let me know. I'm here to help!

This was my second stay at a Vidanta property in the last 12 months. And like the last time, it was disappointing. The property itself is beautiful. But sadly, that is about the only positive thing I can say.
Check-in/Check-out
There is a members line. But it was almost never staffed during our stay. Check in was VERY slow. Even though we arrived after 6:00pm, the room was not ready. During registration, we were asked for a deposit of $2000. This deposit was not mentioned in anything of the hotel confirmation or information that was sent ahead of time. So I refused. Then I was told that the least they would accept was $1500. I opted to pay by credit card instead of leaving the deposit and charging everything to the room. What the resort failed to tell me was that there was a "problem" with all US credit cards. So anytime I tried to charge something, the charge would not go through. After several trips to the front desk to deal with the problem, I was asked if I wanted to just leave a deposit. Of course that was the plan all along. We agreed to a $700 deposit. But funny thing, there was NO problem using the credit card at the high end restaurants. So clearly there is not really a problem with US credit cards.
Check out was also very slow.
Room:
When we finally arrived in our room, we discovered that the room was in need of a serious update. Furniture is old, beaten up, and tired looking. The kitchen stove was in bad shape. The kitchen was missing many items necessary to be able to cook a meal. For example, the only sharp knife was very large, and totally impossible to use for most jobs.
But what was a bit shocking for this type of resort was the fact that we did not have hot water for a few days! The first couple of days it was luke warm part of the time. But on the third day, when we wanted to wash dishes, it was cold. Maintenance did fix the problem. But I would have expected management to be in contact with us. They finally did call the room. On the last morning, as we were getting ready to check-out. Funny enough, that was after we filled out a survey and mentioned the issue.
Information:
Finding accurate information about resort activities is a challenge. For example, there is a Lake Show. On the app, it said it started at 7:00pm and that it was an awesome experience. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were told it started at 7:30. The show lasted less than 10 minutes. The food was good, otherwise it would have been a waste of time. Then somewhere else we saw that there is another Lake Show, starting at 10:00pm on certain nights. We assume that this is the "awe-inspiring" experience that was advertised.
Food:
There are complaints about the prices in other reviews. The restaurant prices are not much more than what we pay in California. But things like coffee are way over-priced. And the overall quality of the food is not great. For example, during our visit a few years ago, we ate crepes at Sweet Paris. They were very good. We were looking forward to eating there again. Pretty hard to get crepes wrong. But they managed! One of the 3 we ordered we actually had to return because the bananas inside were so bad. The price was also way too high. The bill was more than $50 for the 3 crepes. There were two exceptions - La Cantina, and Tramonto both had great food and the price was reasonable for the quantity and quality. I recommend both.

If I did not have a membership, I would not go back.

Room tip: Be prepared to pay a $2000 deposit. Take conditioner for your hair. You can ride the gondola for free. Don't buy a membership!

Friendly and accommodating staff, beautiful property, many activities; pools and pool bars are excellent, especially 2 for 1 happy hours!
Shuttles can take a long time and sometimes quicker to walk, but jungle setting and walking paths are very nice. Spa experience was fantastic! Dining is excellent. All in all a very nice vacation.

To cut to the chase... if you are fortunate enough to be able to stay at Vidanta Riveria Maya, and you understand what to expect, you could have one of those 'best vacations of your life.'

The resort is beautiful. There are coatis, and iguanas, and parrots, and pool bars... and sea front swinging beach beds and hammocks... and spectacular pools, and good snorkeling (just off the beach in front of the main pool)... and a fabulous 'Joy Squad' who led and facilitated so many fun activities for adults and kids alike during our stay.
Diego at the main pool and Ariadna and Naomi at the infinity pool really made the week for our kids, and thus us parents. My wife and I are still in awe of their abilities to keep rocking full energy (6 long hot days a week!).

Our Grand Mayan two bedroom felt luxurious for our family. We used the dipping pool on the balcony daily. The bathrooms - showers and tubs are Ritz Carlton level. Gratitude to Hector at Grand Mayan main lobby check in for a quick and easy check in, and then a quick solution to a room issue. And also to Carlos - concierge building 8.

We had an issue with air conditioning that was fixed promptly, and was followed up with a phone call to ensure all was working well.

There is a lot of walking involved in getting around the resort, so maybe not the best choice for those expecting door to door service. Our family loves walking the Vidanta boardwalks - looking out for coatis, iguanas, birds... passing the crocodile enclosure, pools, beaches...
The shuttle services are well run and convenient - but know there is still a lot of walking once you get to some stops.

Salum and the mercado are beautiful, with many options for good food.
Raphael at the little Mezcal bar made my night our last night with an excellent mezcal tasting.

As many have noted - the food is very expensive... perhaps too expensive. Especially in the market.
The kids meals are great deals relatively. But know the peso conversion. The prices are inclusive of tax and 18% gratuity, but $25-30 for a hamburger... $30 for chicken wings... Prices one would expect of a nice hotel in the US, but hard for a family like ours, trading in for a week.

We typically cook more/most nights in our room. The kitchens and the market feel made to discourage this. We had expected something more along the lines of what we had experienced when we traded into Vidanta Neuvo Vallarta - where there is a very good market with solid produce, meats, groceries for prices comparable to a whole foods.

The closest grocery stores are about 30 minute taxi and $30 each way for a taxi. It is easy to take shuttle to Central Lobby and quickly grab a taxi, that will then wait for you to shop. Would likely do this at the beginning of the week if we are lucky enough to get back.

We would have loved the pools to be cooler, as it was a very hot, humid week when we were there - end of May, early June. Most of the pools felt upper 80s. But guessing that is only a summer issue.

Tips -There are quiet cooler cascading pools between the main pool and infinity pool.
If you can get one of the sea-front swinging beds - outstanding.

Request and press for a room on the jungle side instead of tram roadside, and a higher floor if you can. Avoid the time share presentation - still hearing the same awful stories of hostile sales people from multiple other guests.

Room tip: Beach swinging beds, beach swings. Press for room on jungle side - away from tram roadways. Building 8 was easy tram and also still walkable
