My family and I have regularly stayed at Vidanta properties, and specifically the Mayan Palace, over a long period of time. In general, we have always been pleased with the properties and the amazing staff with whom we have had an opportunity to interact. The Grand Mayan property at which we most recently stayed is a beautiful property and, in general, the staff is great. We also found an area which contains several restaurants and regular entertainment, which area was exceptional! However, I must note the following issues during my family’s stay which cause us to not rank the property 5 out of 5 as we have always done in the past for other Vidanta properties:
- We learned upon arriving at the Grand Mayan that we would be required to pay for parking. We did not have a problem paying for the parking, but it would have been nice to have known about this cost in advance of our arrival.
- We checked in early and were given wrist bands to use in accessing our unit. We were told that our unit would not be ready until 5:00 pm, which we understood. As such, we walked around the resort for an extended period of time and finally decided to relocate ourselves near the room at 4:30 pm. At 5:00 pm, we unsuccessfully attempted to enter the unit with our wrist bands. One of the staff members working near the unit indicated that there was an electrical issue. However, we subsequently learned that the staff person who checked us in did not activate the wrist bands, which led us to having to go back to the check-in desk to have the wrist bands activated; also, the room was actually ready upon our arrival.
- We found no extra value staying in a Grand Mayan unit except for our access to a few additional pools and, in fact, found the quality of the unit to below that of previous Mayan Palace units in which we stayed. In addition, the unit smelled of mold, which I understand is not uncommon for first floor units; however, the unit’s curtains and beautiful artwork contained a considerable amount of mold on them. Finally, the pump connected to the splash pool for the unit was quite loud.
- We returned from one of our outings with groceries that we purchased at a local Walmart. We left our groceries with staff who informed us that they would be delivered to our unit in 15 minutes. However, the groceries, which contained a number of perishables, did not arrive at our unit more than 75 minutes later. In addition, the staff person who delivered the groceries was visibly displeased by the tip amount that we provided, which would have been higher if the groceries had been delivered in a more timely manner.
- We made a reservation to use the pickleball court facility (priced at approximately $20/hour). However, when we showed up at our appointed time, we were unable to get into the pickleball facility as there was no staff present. We walked around the facility to see if there was another means to access the facility but found no such access. We also asked a staff member who happened to be passing by the facility, but he knew of no way to enter the facility. Just as were about to leave, a staff member arrived to open the facility; the staff member arrived about 15 minutes into our appointed time.
