We booked 2 nights at The Slate at the end of a 2 week family holiday in Bangkok and Khao Lak. Our biggest regret was only booking 2 nights here. What a truly amazing resort.

We booked a D-Buk Suite and a Pearl Bed Suite, both of which were beautifully appointed, comfortable and spacious. The beds were wonderfully comfortable. The bathrooms well appointed and both rooms offered everything you could want to make your stay enjoyable.

Breakfast was a wonderful spread and there are a number of restaurants to choose from throughout the resort during the day to satisfy your needs. Venture down to the beach and you can find an array of cheap local eats to choose from.

The cocktails at Rebar and the swim up pool bar were all wonderful as was the customer service at all the facilities we went too. The cold refresher towels and ice cold water delivered to your poolside lounges were a wonderful touch. Customer service through the resort was amazing from everyone we interacted with. A special mention goes out to the lovely young Irish lady working on the concierge desk who was absolutely wonderful when we had a problem with our fights being cancelled, she was also great in booking us transport and a couple of local tours.

The grounds are sprawling which makes the resort feel so much more intimate and less crowded than other resorts of its size. The grounds and pools were amazing, especially the two adults only pools. If you like to escape the hustle and bustle and are looking for true relaxation then this is the resort for you.

I could not recommend this resort highly enough. We loved it so much we have booked a return trip for March this year, so looking forward to coming back in a couple of months.

We booked this for Christmas & New Year and as being the first time away at this time of year was very much looking forward to the experience.

The driver was at the airport to meet us and a nice cool towel & water in the car for us.

Upon arrival the reception checked us in, advised our room wasn’t ready - we had booked the Christmas lunch so they quickly found a room for us so we could freshen up and enjoy the lunch.

The Christmas lunch was amazing, a great selection and service was very smooth I even got a picture with Father Christmas

The rooms are beautifully arranged and every detail met, however the lighting is a little dim. (D-Buk suite)

The pools fantastic especially if as a couple you want to enjoy relaxed time as 2 were adult only! Perfect

The swim up bar - the staff are great! Although might be worth getting a few more for the no rush hour when the pools busy.

The cocktails that were offered differed every time you ordered but that didn’t prevent us enjoying the no rush hour!

The prices in the resort are high and it’s something the hotel should look at as if the prices were lowered more guests would stay on site. Due to the prices we chose to eat out of the resort for the duration of our stay except Christmas Day & the 1 evening we ate at Black Ginger.

The spa looked wonderful but the prices were the same as you’d pay in the UK, this was surprising as just outside there was many places you could enjoy a massage, manicure etc, whilst not in the same tranquil atmosphere it’s hard to justify paying UK prices in Thailand.

Breakfast was good a fantastic selection and also gave you the chance to try local delicacies.

Black Ginger - what an amazing setting truly amazing! The downside was the inability to read a black menu in the dark, also service was rather slow. The food was beautiful and very much enjoyed.

Moos kitchen - this was just brilliant! The trip to the market with the chefs and the whole experience was one we truly enjoyed and so glad we did it! I’d say a must for all, yes quite expensive but the attention given by the chefs to you plus the little extras really made this experience. Well done!

Overall this resort is paradise and caters for all types of traveller, it’s theme of the tin mines flows throughput the resort and it looks wonderful.

As a rule we tend to not return to places we have stayed BUT The slate is an exception I cannot wait to return to enjoy this wonderful place again (I’m sure the prices will be looked at too).

The little gift left for us the night before departure was another lovely touch.

Thank you for a very memorable Christmas 2017!

If like us you look for something unique and personal in your hotel choices then read on, if you're after the clinical homogeny of other well known chains then this place is probably not for you. That being said it's not that The Slate does not do 5 star service, quite the contrary they just do it their way, which I love.
We'd read a few reviews before we left, most great but some not so but as always we made our own decision based on what we know to look for in great hotels. We also booked through Mr & Mrs Smith who made sure everything was perfect for us and we knew if it was on their site it can't be bad.
On arrival we were met at the airport promptly by the pre arranged transfer we had organised and after 10 min drive we got to reception and were very politely asked to take a seat away form the reception desk so we were not standing around waiting and were immediately served with fresh cold towels and welcome drink, already I am happy! Our first impressions of the reception area and it's feel were we loved it already. The decor is unique and brilliantly done, it has an authentic Thai feel which somehow manages to fuse with the industrial chic design perfectly. It smelt divine and was already a very relaxing place to be in. The staff were impeccable and attentive and it wasn't long before we were whisked away by buggy to our De Buk suite.
Whilst driving through the grounds we were loving the feel already, lush mature gardens and open spaces with water features bubbling away we knew we were gonna be at home here. On arriving 3 mins later at our block which was just by the beach and overlooking the bigger of the lawned areas and next to the impressive modern waterfall. We then were taken up 2 flights of small stairs to our room, 2319. On opening the door we were greeted by a large and open double roomed space with 2 balconies overlooking the gardens and we felt immediately satisfied with our choice. The porter told us everything we needed to know about the room and left us to enjoy. It must be said on looking at some of the other rooms during our stay I feel if we hadn't been on a higher floor it may have been a bit darker but I am not entirely sure.

So feeling smug and hungry we decided to order some room service before heading out to explore. The food turned up promptly and was everything we ordered perfectly presented. We then headed out to check out the beach which had some mixed reviews on here. All I can say to those who felt it was dirty and not a great space, you were either very unlucky and went on a day that the tide churned up the silt or just need to get over yourself! it is pure fine white sand and gorgeous water and stretches a good mile in either direction. We were greeted by Thai Chi ladies enjoying the sunrise and a few stray dogs (which is the norm) but essentially it was not packed to the brim with tourists (ever) and a perfect place to take a stroll. It has a few bars, eateries and of course massage parlours but feels very much like you've discovered something that not everyone knows about.

We left the beach and headed back to our room to sleep of the Jet Lag. That evening we had booked a table at Black Ginger......WOW! what a place. One of the finest places I've eaten, incredible setting traditional Thai meets Apocalypse now and the food was exquisite light, fresh and very tasty. Service perfect and where else can you take a sedate pull ferry across a pond to eat your dinner? You must eat here if you decide to stay or even if you stay somewhere else tbh. Feeling even smugger we retired for the night.

The next three days we continued to enjoy the 3 pools (2 of which are adult only), bars, beach and relaxing ambience of The Slate and no point did we feel neglected or that we had spent to much money on our stay here. We had breakfast every day at the Tin Mine and it was an incredible selection of the freshest fair you could imagine, every nuance is catered for, veggie, vegan, GF or I don't care. One thing I will say is that they could do with investing in a genuine espresso machine and barista as the coffee was the only thing I wished to be better.

A few excursions out of the hotel inc a junk boat trip to Phang Nga national park is a must but if I were to do it again I would hire a private skipper and boat as the tourist trail is nuts here. With your own set up you can at least find those more secluded spots that are not over run with flotillas of canoes and huge groups of package holiday folk although we still enjoyed our day out.

On our last day we thought we would indulge in the cocoon Spa at the hotel, yes It's a bit on the pricey side compared with the local parlours but you really do get what you pay for, it's an experience. We chose the 2.5 hr Mr & Mrs package and came out of there in fine fettle!

A few complaints about aircraft noise due to close proximity to the airport, not for us we heard a couple for a few seconds but not once were we ever woken, disturbed or affected by it, guess it's down to the individual but I wouldn't ever not stay here because of it.

We left after 4 days wishing we could of stayed longer I can not recommend this place enough and we will be back.

Room Tip: De Buk Suites have a better location than standard Pearl suits

Positives

Room is excellent, large, modern and comfortable
Pools are great and facilities are beautiful

Negatives
- Dead Cockroaches in the hallways left for days on end. No sign of housekeeping staff
- Room service plates left outside doors overnight (hence the cockroaches)
- Ground transport was very poor. We requested 2 baby seats, only 1 arrived. Manager apologised but blamed local staff. Sent a gift of some stale cookies to make up for it. We had a similar experience in the Westin and they comped us breakfast for the week
-Overall English of the staff is terrible vs other hotels. Often misunderstood food or drink orders
-Management sitting and eating at the breakfast buffet is v unprofessional
-Beach - pretty average with a lot of trashy touristy food/massage places in the local vicinity

Overall you can see this was clearly a great hotel in its prime but has been totally mismanaged. Costs have been cut and management needs a massive kick to get this hotel running properly

The Slate is unbelievable although based on an 'industrial theme. Great rooms and the grounds are fabulous!! Literally on the beach with various restaurants less than 5 minutes walk. Beach is very good but be careful under the palm trees as we ended up with a snake on top of the umbrella!!

However fantastic hotel would definitely return!!
