Had an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound. This experience is not for everyone. It requires some patience as you will travel on one vessel across a body of water before boarding a bus over a mountain pass, ultimately boarding the overnight vessel and back again afterwards. You will spend some time listening to someone explain the scenery around you and you will experience a small portion of the awesome power of the roaring 40's.

The food is buffet style and there is plenty of it. There is a chance to kayak or tender boat before swimming in some of the cleanest water you will ever see or taste. The staff and crew are friendly and accomodating and the rooms clean and comfortable.

If you are looking for the QM2 or a P&O experience then this is not for you. If you are looking for a peaceful and informative overnight tour where you can see some awesome examples of Mother Earth, then give it a go.

In August 2016 we did the 6 night discovery expedition with Real Journeys to Preservation Inlet. The trip began with a helicopter trip over the snow covered southern alps - amazing scenery! Captain Cook spent 5 weeks in the Preservation Inlet area so there is lots of history to explore and lots of tramping/hiking to do. The hike to Puysegaur Point lighthouse is a must do - it must be the most isolated lighthouse in New Zealand. I was up to the top of my gum boots in mud twice on that walk and it was still awesome. Kayaking from the boat was also a highlight of the trip. The boat takes 32 passengers, and 6 crew. The crew is amazing, the food is amazing.
There are seals, penguins and dolphins. Get in shape, pack your gummies and go. We enjoyed it so much that in July 2017 we did the 5 night Stewart Island discovery expedition.

We paarked at Manapouri and caught cruise from there. Spectacular and lots of food. We ordered the pre lunch - not necessary as we got a toasted sandwich from the cafe before boarding then we were given heary soup soon after boarding our Doubtful Sound cruise. The cruise ovver lake Manapouri and the bus trip were bothgreat but the main cruise was fabulous. They say take an overnight bag but dont pack much - if you are likely to go kayaking yes need change of clothes. Our room was a double and not large but was big enough - en suite is small but worked. Take camera.

Real Journeys 7 day Preservation Inlet Discovery Expedition exceeded our expectations, the crew were outstanding their enthusiasm and knowledge was exceptional. It was interesting to learn the history associated with the area and experience the mystical landscape whilst studying the Flora and Fauna. Highly recommended well worth the two year wait. Book it now!!!
