Description: The Hide is located in the small township of Athol, on the highway between Invercargill and Queenstown. Our historic stone building is one of the oldest commercial buildings in Southland. The site dates back to the 1870's when it is thought to have been used as a Saddlery for the passing Gold Rush traders. The Hide is now a thriving Cafe & Garden Bar where travellers and locals alike, stop by to make use of our lovely garden, drink from our fully stocked bar (or takeaway from our Bottle Store), taste our range of food and fabulous coffee, or pick up some essentials in our General Store for their onward journey.

Lovely lunch

First time stopping in Athol. Proved to be a good place for a quick lunch with friendly service. Small but sufficient cabinet and blackboard options.

Best breakfast

We stopped here on the way to Te Anau, glad we did. We both ordered the Big Breakfast and OMG it was so good and $18 was excellent value. Coffee was great too.

Coffee stop

Great service, very friendly young lady... amazing food.. cheese roll was the best I've had... good coffee.... well worth a visit... highly recommend

Great GF options

We stopped at the hide cafe for lunch on our travels, I'm celiac and its always such a hit and miss trying to find gf food options when on the road. They had a great selection of options and the food was great.. My husband had a pie and said it was one of the best pies he has ever had.. And thats a big call. We will definitely be stopping in there again when passing through.

My Fussy Wife Loved the Hide

My wife is very fussy, she was v complimentary on the coffee- v important, and the date scone. Lovely outdoor seating area which gets plenty of sun even in the morning.
