Last night we went to the Hotel Landhaus Grosses Meer to eat at their restaurant as we hadn't been back for some years. We have not stayed at this hotel. The rating is only for the restaurant.

The first time we went there, it was for lunch. At that time the food was just OK, nothing memorable, but the service was because of how cold and unfriendly the staff was. Recently we found out that this restaurant was now owned by Hafenhaus, located in Emden which is a fantastic place to eat. We figured that with this connection that the Landhaus restaurant must have changed for the better. It hadn't.

We had the Schollenfilet (Plaice fish) Greetsieler Art with Salzkartoffeln (boiled potatoes) Champignons (mushrooms), Nordseekrabben (North Sea shrimps), Frühilngszwiebeln (Spring onions) and Sauce Hollandaise.

and from the 'Specials'

Half a Oldenburger Ente (duck) with Thymian-Orangenjus (Thyme-orange jus) with homemade Apfelrotkohl (Red cabbage with apple) and Semmelkloß (bread dumpling.

The fish fillet still had some bones. It was drenched in what we were told was homemade Hollandaise sauce - it, in my opinion, was not homemade. I make my own Hollandaise sauce and know the difference between convenience products and homemade. Anyhow, the Hollandaise sauce was terrible and as it covered much of my fish it made eating the fish not possible. The boiled potatoes were hit and miss. Of the three small potatoes I had, one was not cooked through. The mushrooms had a funny taste to them. I couldn't quite place it but they just tasted wrong.

The duck special was a disaster. The duck was very overcooked and very dry. The skin, at places was burned black like charcoal. The bread dumplings were not palatable. They were hard, dark brown balls, just terrible. The red cabbage was starchy, somehow. It was eatable but not tasty. The jus was not a jus. Its consistency changed from a thick mass into a clumpy something, as the plate cooled.

The waitress came to take our almost full plates away and asked us how we liked it. We told her, stating the points from above while showing her the burnt duck, the hard dumplings and the clumpy coagulated supposed jus. She said "Thank you for telling me". And that was that. She didn't offer any sort of apology nor did she offer us something else to compensate for our mostly uneaten meals. Nothing. She just came with the bill showing the full price for both plates.

The waitress had said that the duck was prepared elsewhere and they just warmed it up (burnt it up). She also said the that Hollandaise sauce was self-made which I cannot imagine, it tasted just like what comes out of the ready made packages and had the same consistency. If they actually made the sauce themselves then they managed to make a sauce that tasted exactly like the industrial version.

The location is beautiful and that's the sad part. It is the ideal spot to go for a nice leisurely dinner while gazing out onto lake but there is no way we're ever doing that to ourselves again. Lake or no lake, scenery or no scenery. Simply yuck!

Room Tip: Don't eat at this hotel's restaurant.
