“The only original 'Ftira' in Gozo!!!”

It is the place were time has stopped and one can enjoy the real atmosphere of an original gozitan 'ftira' baked in an old oven. You can see the whole family taking part in the process of producing the best 'ftira' in the whole Gozo, using the traditional way!! Everyone can see the pizza being done from the very first moments till coming out of the oven, with no hidden processes!!! One knows for sure what one will be eating and not as in the normal restaurants!!!

Well done and continue to do what you have been doing for many years!!!

Excellent bread, great pizzas and wonderful Maltese ftira are made in the traditional wood-burning oven in this bakery which has been run by the same family for several generations. Their bagel-shaped spicy sweet rolls are perfect for breakfast, and you can order your own pizza or ftira combination if you telephone your order in advance. The owners are lovely and the cavernous historic premises are filled with enticing aromas.
It has to be noted that this is a bakery rather than a restaurant, and all items are for taking home, not eating on the premises.

Mekren's Bakery is a true gem if you are looking for authentic, wood burning oven pizzas and breads. My favourites are their traditional ftiras which are filled with fresh artisan sheep's milk cheese and their traditional Gozotian pizza with potatoes, anchovies, capers, tomatoes, etc. -both are just incredible. Not to mention the place has such a warm atmosphere with a century's old wood burning oven at its entrance. It's a food experience I don't miss when I am visiting Gozo. I have visited on numerous occasions and have always found the place to be very clean and the staff to be extremely friendly. Not to mention that the prices are absolutely incredible for the quality of food you are getting. If you want truly authentic and delicious breads and pizzas, Mekren's is the definitely the best in Gozo, if not Malta too! I can't wait to visit again myself this summer.

Mekren's bakery makes traditional Maltese pizzas and breads that come out of their stone oven throughout the day. The breads are excellent and their pizzas are to die for! Pick one up on your way down to Ramla bay, you won't be disappointed! If you can, call in advance and place your order so they have it ready for you as they're busy! You know this place is great because it's where the locals go!

The pizza is very large compared with other bakeries and costs less than 5 euro, so it's very worth it. It is always fresh. However, the bakery is a bit too dirty and needs a good clean up.
