This is the closest to heaven we've been! The house is literally in the clouds and the pictures of the view don't do it justice. The location in Atenas worked great for us - the town is easily accessible by car with good supermarkets and restaurants. All activities were within an hour and a half drive - all beautiful and gave us a chance to explore different areas. We did zip lining near Miramar, whitewater rafting near La Fortuna, surfing at Jaco beach, and also visited La Paz waterfall gardens. The house and grounds are BEAUTIFUL and comfortable. The views are constantly changing and never get boring. We visited during green season (rain) and the weather forecast was thunderstorms everyday, all day. We experienced sunny mornings thru 2pm when the clouds would roll up from the valley. The sky was clear on most nights by sunset. We were able to work on our tans, enjoy the pool and hot tub everyday. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook - we cooked a lot and it worked great! The beds are SO COMFORTABLE and we all commented how it was the best sleep we've ever had! Temperatures at night are amazing and there is always a breeze blowing thru the house. The property managers Aad and Marian are great! They helped arrange all of our activities that were all top-notch. They assisted with airport transfers, rental car, and even arranged for dinner to be waiting for us upon arrival after a long day of travel. All of our needs were met and expectations exceeded - from initial communication with Miguel (owner) at booking, planning with Aad to final departure. This is a fantastic house and experience, and we plan to come back our next time in Costa Rica!
La Frontera De Los Cielos appears to be the perfect home; the ideal place to stay in while on vacation. However the residence although very scenic in photos is not necessarily as described and the renter and managers of the property can be a bit difficult to deal with after booking reservations. After booking our reservations we made several attempts to obtain an address and still to this day have been given the run around to obtain it. The owner and managers both justified this by stating that addresses in Costa Rica do not exist and later stated they were difficult to follow ( which is not completely false; being a Central American country the address is difficult to understand in comparison to American addresses). However after contacting other hotels we were told that of course there are addresses. It was difficult to create an itinerary without knowing our exact location; and when I contacted Homeaway and was given the owners direct number in regards to obtaining an address he specifically ask me "why I needed it" after explaining that I wanted to know to plan accordingly and to provide it to relatives in case of an emergency he exclaimed a bit annoyed that he "did not follow my reasoning." Addresses are important when you are traveling specially if it's a foreign country; in fact you need to provide this details to Customs; instead I got coordinate points. It was a bit scary specially since the owner and managers insisted on a cash deposit of $600 ( which homeaway and AirBnB advise against; and it was to be given down the block from a supermarket; making it sound incredibly shady; however we did receive the $ back in 2 separate installments through PayPal ). In order to pick us up the managers who are the owners suggested tour guides were charging us $53 from the airport; not free as their advertisement through homeaway advertises. The tour guide/manager (Aad) is incredibly rude and difficult to deal with he responded to the request of the address and airport pickup with a very poor attitude and cause a lot of stress as we were departing; making it hard to cancel our reservations. It is not the "ONLY" house with the spectacular views of the pacific and mountains; in fact you will find that while in Costa Rica a majority of the places to stay in have the beautiful and spectacular view ; specially in Manuel Antonio where you get the beach with the mountains and monkeys that visit. The infinity pool is solar heated; so during the rainy season it can be a bit cold. There are a few trees that produce fruit as describe ( mangos and limes) but none that produce guavas, bananas and/or coffee. You will definitely have the opportunity to listen to the beautiful sound of birds around the area as well as the very loud barking of wild dogs near the area; and since the sheets are outdated and incredibly rough, smelly, and stained you will be up enjoying the sound of them undoubtedly. The jacuzzi is available for use however the engines don't always work, so besides the use of the hammock and the patio table there is not much to enjoy from the pictures and as described. The house is an architectural marvel; very rustic and beautiful in sight; yet the layout is not fitted for 4-6 people as described. The house has no Air conditioning so when the nights are hot/muggy it's difficult to sleep; specially in the main bedroom where there is only a ceiling fan that makes an incredible hard sound when powered on; making it feel like it is about to break at any moment. The guest room has full size beds not Queen size beds and also the ceiling fan makes a lot of noise ; however there is a floor fan that is provided. The "guest house" is the servants headquarters; when we arrived the door lock was broken and despite our early 3 month reservation this was not fixed; the manager told us it would be fixed within 2 days if we desired but it was never done; so evidently sleeping there made us feel uneasy. The shower at the "guest house" had no power and left us sharing the other bedrooms bathrooms which were in good condition. The upstairs was a very cute small area where one could do some leisure activities; however the "reading room" although it had much potential use was not being maximized and rather than having the servant headquarters as a room this area has great potential for guest ( since it's the only area with views on both sides of it). All the beds in the house are very old and the springs can be felt. The kitchen area is very comfortable and they do provide a reasonable amount of dish ware; pots, pans, and utensils in case that it's needed. The house is far from other main locations for tourist and because it's lack of comfort it force us to have to stay at a hotel 2 out of the five nights we reserved for; which the owner did not want to refund anything for as a courtesy despite our kind request of it. I DO NOT recommend this house as a matter of fact I suggest looking into the sources that have posted the positive reviews for accuracy because it was mentioned that some of the guest who have posted reviews are in some form connected to the owner.
The view from this house is fantastic. The house is beautiful and well maintained. We stayed for two weeks and would have liked to stay longer. The managers (Aad and Maryanne) were very nice and helpful. The gardener and maid did a great job. It is a short drive to Atenas and about an hour to the beach. We would go back tomorrow!
