Note: This hotel is now called "Hotel Heerlijkheid Bergen". On first appearance, the hotel seemed OK - it was clean, cosy, nice looking, although the room was very very small. The man who checked us in seemed in a hurry to get away, he thrust the key into our hands (telling us it was the spare because the last guests took their key with them - great for security!) and it was only because we asked that he showed us to the room and answered only the questions we prompted. We dumped our stuff in our room and left straight away to enjoy the day as we were only in the area for the one night. When we returned late that evening (10.30pm) we realised that we had no idea what time breakfast was or what time we had to check out. Additionally the room was freezing cold, there was no kettle for hot water, the room was very dark and one of the lightbulbs was out. There was no information brochure in the room at all, so I went in search of assistance. The reception area was closed (I was later told they "closed early" as it was a bank holiday), there was no one to be found anywhere and no information. The only thing that was prominent was a tiny sticker on the door with a list of names and phone numbers to be called "in an emergency", which I didn't feel this was! Upon doing a thorough search of the "lounge area" (a room with tables & chairs that guests can use, which was apparently supposed to have WiFi, but which we could not find any evidence of) I found a single information booklet hidden under a pile of children's story books - this informed me of check out time and breakfast time, and also mentioned that you had to ask if you wanted a kettle or hairdryer as they no longer put these in rooms due to them being stolen. It would have been nice if they guy had told us this when we checked in! There was also no tea or coffee making facility provided in the "Lounge". I relented and returned to my room - I did manage to figure out how to turn the radiators on, which took several hours to actually warm the room up. I tried to have a glass of water, but the two plastic cups which had been provided had splits in them and the water leaked straight out! When my partner and I got into bed we realised that the "double" bed, was actually two single beds stuck together. This seemed pointless given there is no way the room could ever be turned into a twin as it was so small that there was only just enough room to move around the bed(s) as it was. We thus couldn't sleep near each other as one of us would fall down the gap between the beds. On the plus side the duvets were warm and cosy and the beds comfortable. The next morning I discovered that the shower was broken - the shower head would not stay up by itself so I had to shower with one arm holding the shower head up the entire time. Also the bathroom window was clear, so possibly able to see through (no curtain) although perhaps not entirely likely, but still if you are nervous about that sort of thing. The toilet seat was broken also and wobbled side to side when I sat on it. Breakfast was an equally disappointing experience - the food provided was small boxes of candy-like cereal (cocoa pops etc), milk, toast, spreads, scrambled eggs, bacon, orange juice, tea & coffee and pieces of whole fruit - the fruit was the only thing I actually ate from the selection as I am allergic to the rest of it, but I thought it was a pretty poor selection given the price of the room. The staff serving breakfast were quite sullen and seemed irritated to be asked any questions. I had to ask for bowls, spoons and plates. My partner and I are allergic to gluten and dairy products so asked if we could have some scrambled eggs made that had no milk or butter added to them - we were each presented with a single egg that had been whisked, cooked until it was entirely dry and dumped on a plate - certainly no care or consideration had gone into that! When we checked out, we politely told the receptionist of the problems in the room and asked if we could have a discount. She phoned her manager who bluntly refused and thus we had to pay full price.
To add insult to injury my partner is a wheelchair user and he found the room extremely difficult, it was tiny so impossible to move around in his wheelchair and the bathroom had no grab rails and the stool they provided was not really safe for in a shower, so I had to assist him with this (in addition to holding the broken shower head up above his head). Granted we were not promised a wheelchair accessible room, only that it was a ground floor room, which was true, thus I have not factored this element when making my rating of our experience. I only add this note in case the hotel in future tell other potential guests that they have had a wheelchair user stay before and that it is accessible, because it absolutely is not.
