It was our first time in Cuba & we wanted a place closer to Havana than Varadero. This fit the bill as well as being adults only & somewhat smaller than a typical all-inclusive.
We only had a few negatives to speak of. The room we had was sort of musty smelling. We determined that this could be somewhat remedied by not running the a/c unit as it seemed to blow out air with this odor. Fortunately, we found the room to feel fairly comfortable most of the time without it on. The cleanliness of the room was not an issue though as it was straightened up nicely daily. The beds could be summed up in one word, "HARD". The other was that the buffet had lots of items but did not vary much from day to day. You knew exactly what to expect every day & just found that you went back to the same items day after day. Overall, the food was fine, our best meal was at the a la carte La Taberna (Italian).
The staff was very attentive for the most part. Some seemed very focused on their tasks but most of them took the time to greet you in passing. The entertainment staff seemed to enjoy what they were doing & were always circulating about trying to drum up interest in activities without being overbearing. The evening entertainment was as good as we have seen in other places. The musical/dance acts were quite well done.
We enjoyed use of the paddle boats & I actually found this to be an excellent way to do some snorkeling farther out from shore. The snorkeling close to the beach was okay but there seemed to be quite a bit of turbulence in the water causing it to be foggy at times. The beach chairs were always claimed early so we would just spend short amounts of time there & then end up at the pool. As noted earlier, there is not a lot of shade to be found there but we just moved around as umbrellas became available.
The piano bar for us was also a highlight. Definitely the best drinks (nothing pre-mixed). Depending on the crowd, the sing along could get to be quite entertaining.
We met many people who have been to this resort 5-30 times over the years. That in itself is a testament of how much people enjoy this resort. We would definitely consider returning ourselves!

Three star hotel. Rooms very dated, but reasonably clean. Beautiful beach, and pool. The pool area could do with more shades for the guest. Excellent evening entertainment, and probably the best hotel entertainment we have seen. Now the food. Not horrendous, but three star at best, and a couple of occasions nobody at the pasta station. Staff: I could count about five members of staff who gave good service without constant tipping. Some improvement was noted, near the end of our holiday due to an inspection taking place. Food presentation as an example. It was obvious that returning guest were treated differently to new guests. Drinks in plastic cups, causing potential invironmental problems, so at least ask people if they would like a straw, rather than just giving them one. The hike up the hill, is well worth it for the view. Trip to Havana was great with fab guide as was Jeep Safari, the catermaran trip with TUI was ok but wasnt impressed with Dolphins kept in a concrete construction in the middle of the ocean it could have been in a city as dolphins wouldnt have known where they were seemed cruel to us. Unlike our previous visit to Cuba (down south), the Cuban version of Baileys is not in the all inclusive option!!! Take note TUI! Hotel Doctor gave A1 service to one of our group. All in all a lovely holiday due to friends and family we travelled with but if i was to return to Cuba it would be down south.

The resort needs some major improvements despite there being good aspects to it. Starting with the positives, the entertainment in the resort was very good. It had the best evening shows, singers, dancers, etc I have ever seen out of all all-inclusive resort I've stayed at. Absolutely wonderful and the water show was one of my favourites. Another good thing about the resort is the location. It is in a unique location in between the beach and mountains and it is very close to Havana. You can take a a lot of great excursions at this resort and everything is very close. You have great nature, towns and villages and a nice mountain close by which is great for hiking. You have some good activities that are included such as snorkeling and kayaking. There are good options for sports on this resort such as tennis, basketball and beach volleyball. The Wi-Fi was cheap and very effective. Only 1 CUC for 1 hour and the speed in the lobby was very good and the Wi-Fi did work from my room as well. The beach was nice. It was not the best beach I have been to in Cuba but it was relatively clean and you had a nice view of the sea. The size of the resort is small and that can be a positive or a negative depending who you are. I didn't spend too much time in the pool but the one pool did look nice and clean. The rooms were clean but basic. Now I will talk about the negatives. I've noticed the mini bar doesn't get stacked with other drinks besides water unless you are part of the Diamond Club. I found this to be disappointing considering all other resorts I've stayed at had drinks stacked almost daily as part of the regular price. Another major issue was the lack of water available. You only get 1 bottle of water in your room each day and you can't ask for more. I asked for more water in the bar and they made a big deal out of it. This is a big problem as water should be readily available especially when it's hot and you run out. Next, the food was really awful. You can find some okay food items such as the fish and the fruit and some of the breakfast options, but the majority of the food is really bad and I got sick everyday during my vacation from it. I have stayed in another resort in Cuba and I did not have this issue. Even in the a la carte restaurants you have to be careful what you order. The restaurant on the beach wasn't the best either although it did have food that tasted better than in the buffet there. The service at the bars were very slow. The workers were mostly friendly and helpful. Overall I don't feel I got a good value for money at this resort as I've stayed at places at a lower price than this but got more for my money and a better experience. However my vacation was still fun and there are positives to this resort depending who you are.

Hard one to review this.

I wanted to emphasise the poor aspects of the hotel, of which there are some(obviously) which do spoil the overall impression of what could be a really great budget hotel.

But after a fortnight, I'm finding it difficult to write anything scathing due to the other charms this place has.

After visiting Cuba a few times previously, we booked this resort for 3 reasons;
Proximity to Havana.
Adults only.
Very reasonably priced.

Check-in
Not great, have to fill in a tedious form immediately, lobby is open(no air con) and hot, no information pack, map etc. No real info about anything, just here's your key go find it.

We were lucky enough to grab a bell boy who took us to our room.

Room.
Can't speak for all the rooms, but ours was perfectly acceptable, quite spacious, clean, fresh and cool. Yes parts were tired, but that's true of most hotels, so there no point listing every chipped tile etc. The room was fine, and kept spotlessly clean by the wonderful Janet.

Not keen on the balcony, they are open to your neighbours, but you know this before you book, and that's just the design of the place.

Beach

Lovely beach, with a cool breeze most days, which was nice because the weather was glorious every day. Lots of coral near to shore, so great for snorkeling, plenty of fish about.

If you want a sun bed on the front row closest to the water you will have to play the towels at dawn game.. By 8 am the front line was always reserved with towels, and you are relegated to the beds further back.

Pool.
Didn't really use it - apart from the foam party one afternoon which was fun.. No point going to the Caribbean not to spend time by the ocean(yes it's the Atlantic Ocean, but it's still great).

Grounds and layout.
all good, very picturesque and well cared for.

Bars.
Beach and pool bars = Are what they are, plastic cups, but fine for a day time drink.

Lobby bar = Horrible, hot as hell, no where to sit at busy times, queing, and I have to say this, with the exception of a couple of pleasant ladies, the staff were surly and unfriendly, in fact the main male bartender is rather lazy. Drinks come in a variety of glasses depending on what's been washed. White wine in a red hot tumbler straight out of the dishwasher wasn't uncommon.

Piano bar = Jewel in the crown. Cool, best drinks in the hotel, and the two ladies who run Oralys and Karina, it do so flawlessly, with a warm friendly and relationship with all the guests... Aye, Aye, Aye...
It could do with more seats, or a replan to let couples who just want to sit together be able to without rearranging the furniture.

Restaurants.
International = would have dined here every night if we could, best of the bunch.

Italian = runner up, not bad at all.

Beach restaurant = Ok, burgers, pizza and so on in the day, needs more staff, service can be slow. Grill food at night(reservations required for the evening). Nice setting for dinner. Food reasonable.

Buffet.
Really poor to be honest.. First bad point is that you aren't seated for any meal in this restaurant, it's wander in and find a table for yourself, if your lucky and you go early enough you may find one with a full compliment of crockery and utensils.

Ok breakfast wasn't great but you can always find something. Lunch wasn't that good, ok for a mediocre salad.

Dinner was atrocious, same food every night, ropey meat and fish stews, cold veg concoctions. When forced to eat there in the evening, we usually filled up with salad, cheese and crackers(which were good) and desserts(which were good too). Kept the main course to a minimum.

it may help a little if they labelled the food properly, there are some labels but most of the time half the food is unidentified, or the labels are in the wrong place, so apart from the obvious items, it's a lucky dip on what you'd be eating.

One evening I chomped onto some plastic hidden in some spinach - I assumed it was food packaging. Now things can happen, and I can excuse them, but I was disappointed when I told the waitress and all she did was put the plastic in the rubbish...

Additionally, the bulk of the food is uncovered, not ideal in a hot country with an abundance of flies.

For us, the buffet is the biggest let down for this hotel. The restaurant manager swans around contributing nothing. We ate out a couple of times in addition to making full use of the a la cartes, just to avoid the place.

Diamond Club.
They just need to lose this stupid excuse to appear upmarket, it doesn't work in a resort this small and unsophisticated. Having stayed in club class at more elaborate resorts like Excellence and Secrets I under stand the appeal, but sadly it is a complete waste of money here. We nearly did it, glad we didn't, even the year after year repeat guests don't bother with it.

If you're the type of person who feels comfortable marching to the front of a line for a drink, or an omelette for breakfast and demanding service before the other patiently waiting guests with a flash of your £150 silver wristband, then it might be for you. But remember, you're not staying in the Ritz, you've not suddenly been catapulted into the realms of the rich and famous, your actually staying in the same budget resort as the rest of the guests who now think you're a complete twonk, and an arrogant one at that.

Drop the diamond club(a Misnoma by anyone's standard), it's benefits are really minimal anyway. The irony is, if they did then none of the guests would have to wear stupid wristbands, which would instantly increase the classy feel of the hotel. Sadly, it's probably all about revenue, and while people are prepared to pay, they'll happily take the money.

Away from the hotel.

Havana. We hired a 1957 pink convertible Buick with guide for the day to show us Havana. We had a great day, it's well worth seeing. We booked the car before we arrived, you can get a variety of classic cars outside the hotel to show you Havana(cheaper too), but none are convertibles.

El Cacique restaurant. Out of the hotel to the main road, turn left and you can see it, literally a 5 minute stroll maximum. If you like lobster and shrimp, and you like a lot of food, then for 15cuc each you won't be disappointed, even included a drink each.
No frills, just authentic Cuban food in a rustic restaurant.

Staff.
The vast majority of the staff are amazing, and some are simply outstanding - Piano bar girls Oralys and Karina being two, but also many restaurant staff and of course the lovely Janet, just genuinely hardworking, nice people. At the top of this list I have to say is the hotel manager. I've never met a friendlier and more involved hotel manager anywhere in the world. He has time for every guest, he regularly walks up and down the beach just to speak to people, have a laugh, and make sure they are happy. At the foam party, the joy on his face as he danced and joined in with the fun was something so honest and unpretentious that you couldn't fail to be impressed. A truly great guy.

Overall.
This hotel has a lot of serious repeat guests, we're taking two decades, which says a lot about its appeal. It has a very pleasant a different vibe to a lot of larger resorts. There are things I wanted to hate, but the place kind of takes over and makes you overlook its shortcomings. It fulfilled all the things we wanted on this trip, and for the money I think you would be hard pressed to find a better place in this part of the world. Enjoy.
