Very easy walk considering you go to an absolutely beautiful waterfall. The 45 minute walk to the waterfall is stunning, following the river all the way up, so the sound of rushing water is a fabulous complement to the beautiful scenery. The swing bridge you go over before viewing the waterfall was a surprise and added to the experience. I couldn't recommend this walk highly enough. Suitable for all levels of walkers

Best to start at the Ngakawau end and bike up to the Charming Creek mine so you have a down hill return. You will have to dismount and push a few times as the track is not a dedicated cycle trail. Probably not a suitable ride for inexperienced riders. Beautiful native bush and lots of historic features on a old bush rail track. Give yourself plenty of time to check out all the old relics and watch for old rail spikes still protruding from the odd sleeper. Coming down you will have blurred vision if riding a hard tail bike fast over the sections of rail sleeper!

This 19 km return (same track) is a very relaxing stroll that mainly follows an old mining railway track. There are plenty of relics along the way to view, along with some signage of the areas history. You are rewarded with a waterfall, suspension bridge crossing, and a tunnel to trek through. The landscape varies from wooded, along the creek, and open areas. We enjoyed the bird life along the walk too, taking photos of the territorial robins and fluttering fan tails. You can walk as much of it as you want, but we went to its termination at the Charming Creek entrance and car park, and returned to Ngakawau the same way. It really did not "feel" like 19 km as the walk was exceptionally pleasant and enjoyable.

We parked at Ngakawau and walked to Watson's Mill (2½ - 3 hours return) There are waterfalls, tunnels, a suspension bridge, old rail tracks and rusty relics from the railway. And there's no admission charge to the walk. You need to drive north of Westport but the detour is definitely worth doing.

All of the walks around Karamea are great with decent paths yet still plenty of challenge and great exercise. Totally unspoiled and a sense of being all alone in remote but beautiful environment
