What a lovely surprise, just on the road as you drive into the ( town? Hamlet ! Village )
Yes it is quite small, but still has everything you need.
Back to the Motel, very good.We had a 1 bedroom unit , which are semi detached. But so cleverly designed you have a your own private garden. The unit is very large, in my opinion the largest I have stayed in.The large lounge has 2 settles big table with chairs and of course a kitchen. The front window overlook the countryside with the owners mixed animals in a small field in front of your units.Very clean, good bathroom with plenty of hot water.
The new owners make you very welcome and full of advice of the various natural attractions in the Area ( of course the Oparara Arches,a must see )
They do have a Laundry, not mentioned on the web site.
I highly recommend River Motel, Thank you Shona for making our stay so enjoyable.
The village does have a 4 square supermarket, a hotel / restaurant/ pub.
So a good place to go

We booked a studio room here for 3 nights in order to do some hiking in the area. We had one room with a small kitchen area and our own bathroom with shower. The kitchen area was primarily for cold drinks and breakfast, because there was no stove. The other units (one-bedroom units, for example) have a more normal kitchen area for cooking. Consequently, we ate at restaurants all 3 nights and used the room facilities for making a lunch each day and for breakfast.

We had free WiFi which worked well. The room had a queen size bed, a small couch and some chairs outside on a small patio. The view was nice with a green lawn and a small vegetable garden. The bed was comfortable. They serviced the room each day (took out the trash and brought towels if we needed them). I did a couple loads of laundry while we were here - they had a washer, a dryer and clothes lines (reasonable price to wash and dry).

We were here mainly to hike. We hiked in two areas, including one day on the Heaphy Track.

Room Tip: If you want to cook meals, don't book the studio unit.

As described - quaint kiwi baches/cribs of the 70s, some original retro decor, but all spotlessly clean and with comfy beds. The host and driver were both just lovely- friendy and interesting. And you're near to the pub for beer and food, especially useful if finishing the Heaphy. But far away enough for this spot to be silent - no noise at all, so a good night's sleep.

Apartment spacious and well appointed, clean and tidy. Separate bedroom with lounge, dining and kitchen area. Lovely rural setting with farm animals in front of units and view towards the mountains. Hosts very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend these apartments.

The interior our motel unit was spacious and furnished with refined good taste. If you know the Japanese word "shibui", that would describe the decor well.

In a kitschy motel, the cow-shaped milk jug would have been kitsch, but in the sparely beautiful setting of this motel it was a lovely humorous touch.

Eastward through the window, a field with a menagerie of unusual animals including goat/sheep crosses called geep, and dorper sheep; in the distance beyond, the blue hills of Kahurangi National Park.

Thoroughly recommended!

Room Tip: All rooms are at ground-floor level and have similar views.
