We came upon this beautiful property while in some distress over our booking at another terrible property nearby, and boy we felt lucky that day! For starters, we were lucky that they had a room available for a few nights, given how great the property is. Petra, Ralph, and son Mark were so understanding of our issue, and could not do enough for us during our stay. They showed us around the property and a room, courtesy of a long stay guest, offered us coffee and breakfast(even though they were officially closed to the public for breakfast.(guests only). And offered us a room on their "private side" until a vacancy on the guest side of the property came up! We had a wonderful 5 nights in total, before they were fully booked, and sadly we had to move. However, they had an aquaintance who is just starting a B+B 2k up the road in Poneloya, and she recommended we try it. Petra took the time to drive us there to make sure we liked it, and then drove us there again when we had to leave! Talk about looking after her guests! We are still blown away by how not just ourselves, but all their guests were treated like family! A little about the property, the small lodging is beachfront in Las Penitas, on a quieter stretch of sand, directly across from the only ATM in town. The restaurant and bar, Bombora, is run by Mark, who is a chef from Canada. He usually has daily specials, and daily happy hour, Manuel, our favourite bartender, mixes the best cocktails! He is also a wonderful person who offered his help trying to get shuttle transport to Honduras. The hotel has a free full breakfast for guests every day, with a choice of 5 different offerings, but you could customize to your taste. They were all fantastic, and with coffee and juice, and fruit, we never needed to eat again until dinner time! Lunch and dinner offerings are limited(but great) at this time, as Mark is still developing a complete menu. The sunset views are great from here, especially with one of Manuels great cocktails(try the Jalapeño margarita, or the Nica smile). The 5 rooms on the public side of the property are separated from the rest./bar by a gate and wall, featuring a nice small pool, observation tower, and covered seating areas, with decent wi-fi throughout. There is also a communal fridge to place some snacks or beverages, but it is also stocked with ice, and cold drinks that you mark on your "honour" list, paying at the end of your stay. Drinking water is also supplied here for free. This whole area is secure, and gated and locked both to the beach and the street, so no issues, you can come and go with your key as you please, and feel secure at all times. There are also security cameras everywhere. If all other security failed for some reason, there was the ultimate back up, in the form of " Mambo", the familys pet dog, a Great Dane/lab cross, that looks very intimidating, but is actually a beautiful softie! The rooms are very nice, with comfy beds, quality linens, new a/c units, a safe, and nice upscale fixtures. A rarity was being able to flush toilet paper! Such a luxury in this part of the world. Water is an issue in the town, but we always had lots, and the hot water was abundant, with excellent pressure. Naturally, the rooms are spotless, the housekeeping staff, especially "Ida", do a fantastic job, and again, they are all like one big family! Ida will also do laundry for you at a very reasonable rate. Not much reason to ever leave here, you won't do any better! I admit I would like to keep this amazing place a secret, so it will be available when we come again, but what Petra and her family have going on here MUST be shared for the common good! I suspect as time goes by, we will appreciate Nicaragua in general more and more for its beauty and friendly people, and its affordability, and even though we rarely return to many areas we have travelled, we will probably return soon. Keep a room for us Petra!

Room Tip: Farthest from the street, or on the "family" side

My wife and I recently returned from a ten day stay at La Cueva del Tigre, this was our second time staying here in 15 months. The place is fabulous and we will no doubt return. This bed and breakfast is small, only 4 rooms. Recently, they opened the bar/ restaurant next door.
Breakfast (included) is good and served in the restaurant. There is a breakfast menu with about four choices, unlimited coffee and juice The view of the ocean and sunsets are magnificent from the restaurant.
The staff are friendly and helpful. Petra, Marc, Rolf and the staff at both the B&B and restaurant are so accommodating. Petra helped organize our shuttle to and from the airport (about a 2 hour drive) for a reasonable price. As well she organized half day tours to Flor de Cana (rum factory) and a tour by boat in the nearby Nature Reserve.
Our room was clean and comfortable with air conditioning and fan. The room is not large, but it is more than enough, given you spend most of the time outside, in the pool, beach or laying in a couple of the hammocks!
The grounds are immaculate and secure. We felt very safe here.
We met a number of very nice people during our stay, both travelers and staff. A sign of a good place is the number of returning customers. La Cueva del Tigre has many 'regulars'!!.
The beach is literally at your door step. We walked the beach every day. There are rocks out in the ocean, so you need to be careful swimming, but just pay attention. Walking the beach is no problem at all, either at high or low tide.
Marc runs the restaurant, this was new from the time of our previous visit. The food is very good, pub style, great chicken wings.
Las Penitas is a small fishing village. There are a number of other restaurant choices (surprising for how small the community is). Las Penitas is very close to Leon ( 20 minutes or so by car) There is a 'chicken bus' that passes in front of the hotel that goes into Leon, which is ridiculously cheap from North American standards. It can thou be an experience! The alternative is a taxi, which seems to cost 300 cord (as of March 2018)
Overall, I think this is one of the best beach holidays we have had in a very long time. The combination of the price\value, location, staff and laid back feel of this place make it a sure bet when choosing where to stay.
I am surprised Las Penitas is not more of a destination for tourists. We arrived in high season this time and last time in November. This time the beach had a few more people, but nothing.......nothing compared to other beach destinations we have been to. Two thumbs up for Las Penitas and La Cueva del Tigre

We went there for dinner atmosphere is bright, service was very good. Owner came out and made sure our dinner was good. Clean, great price, great food. The chicken wings are fabulous!
Menu is very limited to pub food. I had an amazing chicken burger with fries for under 5 bucks.

It is located directly at the beach. The garden with its hammocks is great, especially during the sunset.
It is the only hotel we stayed in with hot water shower which is a kind of luxury here. What we really loved about the place is the laid back atmosphere, i.e. there is a fridge with drinks and you can help yourself anytime you want. Just count on a list what you have taken from the fridge. Ashtrays, sun creme, big spray etc is available for free.

The breakfast varies every morning and is very delicious. The owners are Germans and put a focal point on tidiness (of course) and take care a lot of their guests. They really make everything happen what you wish for. Aida, their maid, is the most friendly person you can imagine. She did the laundry for us very well and cheap.

I had a lilively and memorable stay and found the hosts to be remarkably friendly and helpful. I splurged and my room was far more luxurious than I had experienced in Nicaragua. Quiet and calm in a non busy area of the beach away from the younger backpacking crowd but within easy walking distance of restaurants
