Everything about Prato di Sotto is special and exceptional. It's an old farm, wonderfully restored, on the side of Monte Corona just outside Umbertide, with fabulous views over the hills and valleys towards Assisi or the Upper Tiber Valley. The owner, Penny, is incredible kind, thoughtful and helpful, so even though we speak very little Italian she was always on hand to book restaurants or horse rides or just give us advice on where to go and what to see. The location is just beautiful, in the middle of olive groves that were full of wildflowers when we stayed in late May/early June. We will never forget sitting on our terrace watching the sun set and hearing the nightingales calling in the forest above us. We did do some sightseeing, and spent and expensive day in Perugia (shops!) and also did a day trip to Florence by train, which was easy. We also went on the Piero della Francesca road trip, which takes you through several little towns where you can see the work of this great renaissance artist in the little churches for which they were painted. Umbria is a beautiful, unspoiled region where you don't feel too much like a tourist and everyone seems happy to see you.
