“Great cottage, shoddy management”
Reviewed 22 May 2017 for a stay in May 2017

This property was described as 'luxury' but we had a week full of niggles and problems: the washing machine was on when we arrived, with bedding mistakenly put in there by the cleaner. The owner said she'd collect it later that day but never appeared and the washing was STILL THERE a week later when we left - we had to move it when we needed to use the machine. The owner lost her usual set of keys and was clearly not happy with letting us have her 'last spare set'. The dishwasher left a horrible residue on everything, and we had to SCRUB it clean after the cycle had ended - not easy with the kitchen sink plug not working and no washing up bowl! (I used a Tupperware in the end.) There were no instruction manuals for any of the equipment, but instead an Inventory that demanded payment for anything broken during our stay but unfortunately wasn't up to date as several items were missing. The bathroom sink leaked badly if the tap wasn't turned on in a very careful way (a problem ongoing since 2012 according to the visitors' book). The final straw has been the owner ignoring my email asking for the return of my damages deposit cheque (something I had specifically asked for on booking, rather than having the owner tear the cheque up) - I had to go to the bank to stop the cheque, and pay for the privilege!

There were a lot of good points - the property is a lovely conversion in a great location, most of the fixtures and furniture are high quality and the property has a huge kitchen. The owner was also thoughtful enough to have a cake waiting for us on arrival, as it was my partner's birthday. So this lack of attention to detail and rudeness in ignoring my email was upsetting and inexplicable.

Management Response
24 May 2017
Dear Julie
Apologies if there were some things were not up to standard during your stay, I did apologise about the washing being in the washing machine on your arrival, as I mentioned my cleaner was away and I had one from an agency who misunderstood about where to put the washing. We state quite clearly that we destroy your deposit cheque if everything is alright, if I was lapse in replying to you I can only apologise.I tried to respond to you as quickly as possible with your many emails and thought I had been as attentive as I could, receiving your card for your partner in advance and making sure it was in the Hayloft on your arrival a long with a birthday cake, flowers and card from ourselves wishing your partner Theresa a Happy Birthday. Unfortunately sometimes due to work and family commitments we cannot respond as quickly as we would like.

Beautiful barn conversion. Great location right next to the canal. And lovely walks to debizes and rowde. Only negative, instructions on how to use the log burner (as never used one before) would have been useful

“Ideal location for walking along the Kennet and Avon Canal”
Reviewed 4 February 2015 for a stay in January 2015

We chose the Hayloft because of its close location to the Kennet and Avon canal. 5 minutes walk and you are on the tow path near the famous Caen Locks. The hayloft is ideal for 2 people with a spacious bedroom, kitchen and lounge.
The accomodation was clean, warm and comfortable. lots of hot water for a soak in the Bath after a long walk( no shower). and a log burning stove for evenings by the fire.
We ate at Melksham tandoori 1 night, the food was delicious.
We enjoyed a day visiting Lacock where we had a lovely lunch at Sign of the Angel and a drink at The Rising Sun Bowden Hill near Lacock. with a fabulous view.

“Very nice week”

We have just spent a very pleasant week at The Hayloft and thought it was lovely. We were surprised how spacious it is, especially the kitchen and bedroom. The property is comfortable and warm, the log burner doing a splendid job of heating the whole apartment. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well, though one can hear the traffic on the busy nearby main road. The window blinds let a lot of light through, which on a sunny Summer morning might make for an early wake-up!

It's useful having a downstairs toilet as well as the one in the bathroom. I would have preferred a shower to a bath, though my wife prefers the latter. Although impractical now, the upstairs area would have been large enough to accommodate a shower unit as well as a bath. The kitchen is well-equipped. The only missing item I would have liked is a washing-up bowl. WiFi worked well throughout the apartment.

We liked the fact that we could walk from the garden directly to the canal towpath and walks in both directions are very pleasant. We ate at The Crown in Devizes, The Cross Keys in Rowde village and The Barge Inn in Seend Cleeve - all were good, the latter being the most classy but also the most expensive.

Liked best: The log burner
Liked least: The fact that it was too light in the bedroom
