A nice place to stay

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Feb 2015
I stayed at Kanaani Resthouse in January 2015 for one night only. It was a little hard to find walking from the towncentre, but when I arrived, it was nice to find self service afternoon tea in the diningroom with some delicious sweats and nuts.
It is situated in a quiet area and has nice views.
I stayed in the dorm which is fine, but I was by myself. Might get a bit crowded if the lodge is full.
The bathroom could do with some shades to make it more private, but everything works, so that is fine.
The evening buffet dinner was very nice and so was the breakfast. The best I had in the Usambara mountains!
Very friendly staff and good communication with the owner before booking.

Thank you for your rating! You are right, Kanaani Resthouse is located a bit uphill from downtown Lushoto. We recommend our guests take a taxi after they have arrived at the bus stand. So they will be at the hotel most comfortably within about seven minutes for only TSH 5.000. With littel baggage you can even take a motorcycle taxi ("bodaboda") for only TSH 1.500.

I really enjoyed my stay in Kanaani Resthouse: very friendly and helpful staff, nice panaroma view, great food (always a big selection from a yummy, creative homemade buffet).
Sabine, the owner, creates a special familiar atmosphere and is very helpful in organizing activities (recommended me a nice guide for a three day walk) and transport (e.g. taxi and bus ticket). I also enjoyed the interesting talks about Tanzania and culture with her.

The service was so great and the owner tried to help with everything. She had good contacts with both a guide for hiking, taxi etc. The food was homemade and delicious. And the view when you stepped out from the little house was stunning. Just no internet, but that was hard to find in hole Lushoto. Really a place to recommend!

Hi Frida, thank you for rating us! Oh yes, we are heavily working on "that mysterious internet thing" :-) By the way: you can easily help yourself: Get a local SIM card – in our experience Vodacom works best for Lushoto. This is easy to get at the airport or in Lushoto or at any place in the country. In Lushoto there is a Vodacom shop located directly at the bus stand. The staff in the shop will be happy to assist you with charging your SIM card with online credit. With this online credit you can access to the internet with your mobile phone. And you can use your mobile phone as a hotspot for your laptop computer.

We moved to Kanaani after a not so nice, rather sleepless night in another guesthouse in town and were more than glad we chose this property! The location and the staff really create an atmosphere of serenity and warmth which is so beneficial, especially when traveling. Although it is located near the town center, it is a great starting point for hikes in the gorgeous surroundings. Any assistance needed is provided - either free of charge or at very reasonable rates. The rooms with terrace are impeccable, hot water showers not only advertised but actually working!!! Food also a plus as offered as a buffet - huge variety of healthy dishes! In short, this guest house rightfully tops the Lushoto list of hotels! The three of us all hope to be able to return one day..

Thank you for this: "...hot water showers not only advertised but actually working". Outstanding, isn't it? ;-))) Yes, Lushoto visitors should chose Kanaani Resthouse directly and without any detours.

The resthouse is just a 10 min walk from the center, up the hill, so you are close enough for a quick visit to the town - but already far enough to enjoy the quietness - and the great view towards the opposite mountain range. The place has a very warm feel and genuine friendliness. Here we were neither "forgotten", nor talked into trips..or anything else. Staff and management are real lovely people ready to assist in any way. Rooms very spacious, bathroom big too, all with terraces - everything in perfect condition. Food choice great and nutritious. All done with a lot of care and attention. We have already been to other places in Lushoto...but Kanaani is definitely going to be our only choice in the future. We will be back for a language course if all goes well!

Hi Amina, thank you for your rating. We always enjoy reading we are first choice. But to be honest: you must be in very very good physical condition: most guests need a 20 to 25 minutes walk from Kanaani to downtown Lushoto. And they often take a motorcycle taxi (bobaboda) for their way back - much fun for little money.

We have been traveling through TZ and stopped at this little nice rest house. Great food and accommodation for little money.

We were recommended this hotel and booked 1month before. We arrived by bus in Lushoto coming from DAR. We asked for the way and interestingly a number of people had excuses why they could not bring us in our Lodge. Later we realized that there are paid tour-guides who only sent visitors to their hotels. We called the reception and someone came to pick us up.

During our 3 days stay there were many people joining for lunch/dinner from other hotels as their food wasn't that delicious. We were glad we have not been enticed away to other accommodation at the beginning :).

Room tip: all rooms are the same. Bath en suite and warm water.
