Best Place for a Peaceful Stay in Lushoto

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Dec 2014
The resthouse is just a 10 min walk from the center, up the hill, so you are close enough for a quick visit to the town - but already far enough to enjoy the quietness - and the great view towards the opposite mountain range. The place has a very warm feel and genuine friendliness. Here we were neither "forgotten", nor talked into trips..or anything else. Staff and management are real lovely people ready to assist in any way. Rooms very spacious, bathroom big too, all with terraces - everything in perfect condition. Food choice great and nutritious. All done with a lot of care and attention. We have already been to other places in Lushoto...but Kanaani is definitely going to be our only choice in the future. We will be back for a language course if all goes well!

Hi Amina, thank you for your rating. We always enjoy reading we are first choice. But to be honest: you must be in very very good physical condition: most guests need a 20 to 25 minutes walk from Kanaani to downtown Lushoto. And they often take a motorcycle taxi (bobaboda) for their way back - much fun for little money.

We have been traveling through TZ and stopped at this little nice rest house. Great food and accommodation for little money.

We were recommended this hotel and booked 1month before. We arrived by bus in Lushoto coming from DAR. We asked for the way and interestingly a number of people had excuses why they could not bring us in our Lodge. Later we realized that there are paid tour-guides who only sent visitors to their hotels. We called the reception and someone came to pick us up.

During our 3 days stay there were many people joining for lunch/dinner from other hotels as their food wasn't that delicious. We were glad we have not been enticed away to other accommodation at the beginning :).

Room tip: all rooms are the same. Bath en suite and warm water.

This hotel is owned by a German woman who's been in Tanzania for many years. It is rather small at the moment (July 2014 - 4 rooms), but slowly expanding into more rooms. The owner is referring a guide who can arrange hikes and small tours around Lushoto, which was very welcome. The food is also provided for every meal in buffet-style with excellent local recipes and in gigantic quantities. On the day of our hike, the owner had her staff prepare a few additional items at breakfast that we could take away for lunch, very nice touch.
Rooms are clean and calm, with a nice few on the mountains. The only negative point would be the size of the beds: being a tall guy, I could not lay straight in the bed, it was too short.
All and all, very recommended for your stay in Lushoto.

Room tip: As of July 2014, all 4 rooms are equally great. New rooms are being built but I have no idea when they'll be ready...

We really enjoyed our stay here. Rooms are comfy, big and very affordable. The staff are all really nice and very helpful...booked us several hikes for half the price most tours wanted and even did our laundry for free! Meals are plentiful and also very reasonable. Would definitely stay here again if we went back to lushoto.

My partner and I left Kanaani only this morning and already I feel compelled to write a glowing review..

Situated a very pleasant 30 minute stroll from the centre of town through leafy woodland, the rest house has a great balance of being easy to access and yet perched peacefully in the hills where tranquility prevails.

The rooms are very comfortable with hot showers and lots of other little touches which make it a brilliant place to frog bags after a long days travelling.

The owners (Tanzanian husband and German wife) couldn't have been more accommodating and friendly and helpful.

It would be impossible to write a review of Kanaani without mentioning the food which is not only incredible but comes in such vast portions every breakfast (and dinner if requested) that you WILL leave stuffed. It's all cooked onsite by a small friendly team of local ladies and is offers a huge selection for veggies.

We stayed three nights in total. We went on a two night hiking and cycling tour with a local guide called Simon who comes highly recommended. We were put in contact with him by the German lady running Kadaani so ask to go with him (don't get ripped off by one of the tourist centres in town who will charge much more for the same excursions!).

All in all, brilliant value rest house. Highly recommended. (Like most places in the very hilly area of lushoto, it may be slightly tricky/muddy to get to if going in rainy season but this didn't affect our stay.)

This was my second visit to Kanaani and I was absolutely content with everything. Sabine is a wonderful host who is ever willing to help her guests. The accommodation is simple but clean and fulfilled my wish in every way. The rooms are spacious and have everything I needed - including a mosquito net on every bed. The buffet style food is caringly prepared and would satisfy the most demanding of guest I suspect. The views over the mountains are wonderful and generally, except for a few barking dogs at night, the place is peaceful. If you are looking for clean, comfortable and friendly accommodation that is good value for money, with a caring host, Kanaani should be your first choice.
